The Edinburgh Reporter Danube StreetBuchanan Scholarship – Canal Fest – David Bowie at The Cameo – Animation from Stockbridge Primary School – Wimbledon afternoon tea

The council plans to remember Councillor Tom Buchanan who died last month by setting up The Buchanan Scholarship in his honour. It is widely recognised across Edinburgh that Tom Buchanan was a hard-working and dedicated councillor for his ward of Liberton/Gilmerton, but he also had a great effect on the city through his work as Economic Development convenor.

The plan is to offer a scholarship to a young school leaver to support them in pursuing a career in Economics or Economic Development, thus supporting jobs in the city at the same time.

The proposal is that a panel of councillors make the award to a school-leaver, perhaps on a Modern Apprentice model where the annual starting salary is £12,600. This is the first step in setting up such a legacy, and the actual definitions of the award criteria have to be finalised.

The Economy Committee meets at the City Chambers this morning beginning at 10:00am.
