Pedestrians on Princes Street have had a fairly hard time over the years since the tram project began. The area at the east end of Princes Street is still a mess of road works even though the council have said it is reopened to traffic, it seems that they may have forgotten about one vital pedestrian crossing point.

The crossing leads from the junction of South St Andrew Street across to the Waverley Mall and on to Waverley Steps. There does not seem to us to be any alternative route offered.   There are buses, taxis and of course tram tracks to negotiate. Do you use this crossing? Send us your comments below!

We wondered if perhaps the Transport Convenor would like to reconsider pedestrian safety at this junction? We asked her for her comments and she said this morning:-“I  asked on Wednesday for a response from officers as I  unhappy this crossing is switched off. I hope to have more information for you later today.”

UPDATE

Councillor Hinds has now issued the following statement:-“The pedestrian crossing at the junction of Princes Street and South St Andrew Street is currently closed to accommodate work on the traffic signalling system. It is expected to be completed by the 1 of February at the latest and we ask that people use the other nearby crossing points on Princes Street until it is fully reopened.”

This is the latest map issued by the council of traffic management in the area.

  1. Yes, I use this crossing all the time. The particularly crazy thing about this crossing is that the lights are active for the road traffic. So when I’m on my bike I have to wait at the red light even though the pedestrians are not supposed to use it because their signals are covered up and the crossing is ‘not in use’. Totally unnecessary and unhelpful because of course people (myself included) just cross to the side of the barrier and so can’t use the drop kerbs.

  2. Two of us were nearly knocked down by a bus and then a car, when attempting to cross Queensferry Street at Melville Street this afternoon. The traffic lights were showing a “green man” but that didn’t seem to matter to either driver. The crossing is very dangerous, avoid using it and cross the road another way.
