Hey everyone. Sorry for yet another mailshot this week. Things got a little heated last night with the sale of tickets for BB8. We have spoken to The Pommery Bar this morning and decided to run BB8 again on Wednesday 22 August. There will be 62 tickets available to purchase tonight at 8pm on our Facebook Page. http://www.facebook.com/burgherburger

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information to help trace relatives of a man who has died at his home in the Capital.

Francis David O’Neill, (59), was found dead at his home in Dumbryden Gardens on Tuesday afternoon.  There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

There is little information available regarding any family or friends of Mr O’Neill, who was born in Dundee.  It is believed that his mother now stays in Australia and that he may have an aunt called Heather Hutchison living in the Manchester area, however enquiries have so far been unsuccessful.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said:- “We are appealing to anyone who knew Francis O’Neill, who has any information that can assist us in tracing any of his relatives, to contact police.

“Anyone else who has any other information that can assist our enquiries should also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.

Edinburgh Art Festival begins today. There is just so much to see spread across various galleries, but one of the nicest ways to cover as much as you can would be to take a Festival Promenade. There is a map available from the galleries to guide you on your way designed by Scottish illustrator Peter Arkle.

There will be one-off and daily performances by the best contemporary artists including a one-off performance piece by Emily Speed; participatory city tours by Anthony Schrag; weekly film screenings and artist talks at the Rose Street Film Club on historic Rose Street and The House of Fairy Tales, founded by artists Deborah Curtis and Gavin Turk, who will produce interactive narratives and highly immersive environments across the city for children and families.

Festival Detours, commissioned by EAF and produced by Trigger, will present an innovative series of intimate live performances in some of Edinburgh’s leading visual art spaces by poets, authors, musicians and comedians including singer Scott Hutchisonfrom Frightened Rabbit, comedian Simon Munnery and theatre performer Nic Green. Further highlights will include the return of the popular Art Late, which for the first time will be split into two events North and South of the Royal Mile over two nights on 16 and 23 August.
The map for the Edinburgh Art Festival shows the locations and opening times for all commissions and exhibitions across the city. Maps are available now from all of the Edinburgh Art Festival venues and to download from the EAF website, and will also be available at the pavilion in St. Andrew Square from 2 August.
We would highly recommend going to the Fruitmarket to see the Dieter Roth Diaries exhibition. We interviewed Fiona Bradley the Director of the Fruitmarket Gallery about it yesterday and you can listen to that interview under Edinburgh Reporter Radio later. It is a very different way of showing off the late artist’s day to day life.

Miller Homes, the 5 star housebuilder, is opening the doors at its flagship development at Varcity South in Edinburgh to host a fact-finding evening for investors looking to buy a property to rent in the Capital. Supported by local mortgage, rental and tax experts, the event will be held at their Varcity South development, Crewe Road South, Edinburgh on Thursday 16th August 2012, from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

Figures show that the number of people renting private properties in Scotland has almost doubled in the past five years and between its prestigious Universities bringing in 100,000 students annually and over four million tourists flocking in for the Festival each year, Edinburgh remains a destination of choice.

Combined with demand rising for good quality rental properties amongst people unable to get on to the property ladder themselves, the city is an increasingly buoyant market for buy-to-let.

Anne Marie Britton, Sales Director for Miller Homes Scotland East said:

“As demand for rental property grows in Edinburgh, people are keen to get into property investment but don’t know where to start.  Our event provides free advice from independent professional advisers in mortgage, rental and tax matters.  They will be on hand to offer one-to-one advice, talk through the buy-to-let process and share their knowledge to help potential new investors understand how this could work for them.

“In recent months, our high quality, central flats are attracting significantly more attention from established investors, who know that they can attract a good dividend from renting out their investment property.  That’s what has prompted us to hold this event to support those considering taking the first steps.

Expert advisers at the event will include:

  • Independent financial advisers – Life Time Planning
  • Taxation experts – Grant Thornton
  • Rental agents – Murray & Currie

Miller Homes’ experienced sales team will be available to take guests on a tour of the Varcity South development.

The event is free to attend, just email investment@miller.co.uk or call 0870 336 5235 to register your interest.

The Reporter is off to the preview show of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo tonight. This is what they have told us to expect:-

“The 220,000 people who are expected to attend this year’s Edinburgh Tattoo (3-25 August) on the Castle Esplanade will witness one of the most unusual performance pieces in the event’s 60 year history.

Sporting his famous red and white hooped jumper, it will be provided by cartoon character and arch mischief-maker, Dennis the Menace in company with comic favourite Minnie the Minx and her unique brand of mayhem.

Said Tattoo Chief Executive and producer, Brigadier David Allfrey: “These celebrated characters are a universal element in our national mix. We have grown up with comics and some of us even enjoy them into adulthood! Everyone relishes the prospect of a little menace! While the Tattoo seeks to entertain and inspire it is always good to not take ourselves too seriously. This year has seen so many extraordinary celebrations: Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics both to set the scale. These are all about joy and we all love a celebration.”

But, even with the prospect of a little ‘menace’, this year’s Tattoo opens with a scene from faraway times with a Pictish warrior seizing upon a shiny pebble and taking the audience to the start of a magical journey across the ages. The sound of an ancient horn – a Bronze Age carnyx – signals the appearance of the Massed Pipes and Drums and the heart stopping sight and sounds of the very essence of the event.”

Some tickets for the 2012 Tattoo (3-25 August), priced £23 to £59, can still be obtained at www.edintattoo.co.uk/tickets or acquired by telephone on +44 (0)131 225 1188 or in person from the Tattoo Ticket Sales Office at 34 Market Street in Edinburgh.
