EDINBURGH CHARITY ORCHESTRA PLAYS FOR WAVERLEY CARE

Waverley Care, Scotland’s leading charity providing care and support to people who are living with HIV or Hepatitis C, is to benefit from Edinburgh’s newest orchestra.

Edinburgh Charity Orchestra’s next concert, which takes place today Sunday 19th February at 7.45 pm at St Cuthbert’s Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh features three works:

Tam O’Shanter – Malcolm Arnold

Clarinet Concerto – Carl Neilsen

Excerpts from Romeo & Juliet – Sergei Prokofiev

The solo clarinettist is Edinburgh local Calum Robertson,  currently a postgraduate student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the concert will be conducted by Iain McLarty who established the orchestra.  Tickets, priced £10 (£7 concession) are available  on the door or with an advance booking discount from http://xtspro.com/-/romeo-and-juliet/.

Edinburgh Charity Orchestra was set up in 2011 to perform large scale concerts while raising money for and awareness of the work of local charities. The orchestra is invitation only and brings together some of the best professional, student and amateur players in Edinburgh to perform alongside each other. They also aim to give young professionals experience as composers, soloists and conductors

Grant Sugden, Director of Waverley Care said “We are thrilled to have been selected as the beneficiary of Edinburgh Charity Orchestra’s next concert.  As well as providing much-needed money, the concert also provides a platform for us to raise awareness of the difference that we are able to make to the lives of those living with HIV or Hepatitis C.  Much of our fundraising has been in the area of choral music and we hope that, through this concert, a wider audience of music lovers will become aware of both our work and of our own musical activities.”

Iain McLarty, Conductor of Edinburgh Charity Orchestra said “Waverley Care is a fantastic example of a charity working tirelessly in their local community and we are delighted to be able to support them. It is great to see so many musicians give their time and energy to support local charities , particularly in these difficult financial times, and we hope that people will enjoy a night out to support this cause.” The orchestra’s inaugural concert, in May 2011, raised in excess of £700 for The Yard, a purpose-built play facility for disabled children in Edinburgh.
