Massive 3D projections of famous Scottish quotations will illuminate George Street and Rose Street this March as part of Edinburgh’s new initiative. The project, named ‘enLIGHTen’, is led by The City of Literature Trust and will last for two weeks.
The event is a first for Scotland and will see a mix of specially commissioned animations and audio to give Edinburgh revellers a truly multi-sensory experience.
The project will also aim to celebrate the literary and build heritage of locations such as Charlotte Square and the Melville Monument in the city’s Poetry Garden. This builds on the Carry a Poem campaign’s activities which took place in 2010 when poetry was projected on to the Castle Rock.
Cutting edge technology will be used to provide each area with downloadable audio experiences for the public to get more information about the heritage of the location.
These audio downloads will also feature the words of great Enlightenment thinkers, and poetry from the likes of William Letford and James Robertson.
City of Literature Director, Ali Bowden said:- “We are shining a light back to the Scottish Enlightenment period, reminding us all that Scotland led the world of pioneers of thought.”
The grand launch of the spectacular light show will be Thursday 1 March 2012 at 6pm in St Andrew Square and will run until 18 March.
Iain Munro, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said, “enLIGHTen will create a dynamic celebration of our world-renowned literature, set against the architecture of the historical centre of Scotland’s Enlightenment. Seeing the city centre lit up and featuring our contemporary poets is sure to be one of the highlights of the Year of Creative Scotland.”
