Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted and robbed in the capital.

The incident happened around 1.10am today (Tuesday) in Caledonian Crescent, in the west of the city.

A 24-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman had just got out of a black cab when three men approached them.

The men then demanded the couple hand over their possessions before punching and kicking the victim, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

All three then fled with the man’s belongings and were lost to sight.

The victim was taken to the ERI where he is being treated for his injuries.

Detectives are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward. The suspects are all described as white and were wearing green, white and blue hooded tops respectively.

A police spokesman said: “This has been a particularly vicious assault, which has resulted in a man being knocked unconscious and requiring hospital treatment.

“The incident was also very distressing for the victim’s girlfriend, though, thankfully, she was uninjured.

“We believe a number of people may have been in or around Caledonian Crescent at the time of the attack and would ask anyone who witnessed the assault to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspects and can assist officers in identifying them is also asked to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
