The City of Edinburgh Council issues a weekly list of planning applications on its Planning Portal. The latest update shows that there are many building projects in the city, either to renovate existing buildings or to build new ones.

This week’s notable applications cover a wide range of areas and developments.

One of the most interesting is right at the end of the list. This is for 60 affordable homes at Westfield Avenue.

A flat at number 28 Buckingham Terrace is to be remodelled by the installation of dormer windows. The application is for replacement of rooflights with new dormers and new internal door to provide safe access to roof for maintenance at 2F 2 Buckingham Terrace,Edinburgh EH4 3AE .

Meanwhile at the former Woolworth premises on Lothian Road, Sir David Murray’s property vehicle, PPG, has applied for permission to form a ground floor retail space: 5 storey office above, basement plant, parking and alterations to the frontage of Lothian House, 142 Lothian Road, Edinburgh EH3 9BQ

On Princes Street there is an application to turn some vacant offices into a 9 bedroom hotel. The application details the application for Change of use from vacant office space to hotel, 9 No. rooms formed at 24, 25 Princes Street, Edinburgh,EH2 2AN

The University plans to renovate the David Hume Tower in George Square, although it is difficult to see how it will look any different from the elevation plans.

Another hotel, this time at 194 Fountainbridge to provide another 181 of the rooms that the council have decided Edinburgh needs.

The Royal Bank have lodged plans to use a site on Eyre Terrace for what is called a mixed use development. This states that it will encompass retail, residential, hotel and a care home. There will be an exhibition in Stockbridge Library on 11 January to show the plans to any interested parties. The exhibition is to be open from 2 to 8p.m.

On Great Stuart Street , South Clerk Street and York Place there are applications to convert offices into houses, and The Carlton Highland Hotel is planning to convert 6 staff bedrooms to 10 guest rooms and other public areas to form an additional 17 rooms.

Something called a footfall counter is to be installed at the High Street, and we can only assume that it does exactly as it says.

On Constitution Street there are plans to stabilise the ground in the churchyard by demolishing and rebuilding the boundary wall with new foundations.

An application for Greggs Bakery to “Alter shopfront and install outdoor air conditioning condenser units at 162 Restalrig Road South Edinburgh”. The new shopfront does not look too materially different from any other Greggs shop. You can see the new look here. Also in Restalrig there is an application to change the use of the social club to what is called a non-residential institution, although there are few details as to what that really means as some of the documents have still to be uploaded to the site.

There are a couple of applications for solar panels to be installed on buildings, which is always a good idea, even at this latitude. Anything that can be done to capture natural energy must be a good idea.

And of course the two applications by Turley Associates, Architects, for permission to put up signs at Edinburgh Castle for both the Paralympic and Olympic Games. We reported this story last week and it is still sparking comment!
