Cinema lovers who enjoy a spooky thriller will be in their element at a special Halloween film event being held at Edinburgh’s world famous Usher Hall.
Earlier this week, the iconic venue on Lothian Road celebrated becoming the only concert hall in Scotland to land a five star rating from VisitScotland. Inspectors praised the Hall’s exceptional facilities, acoustics and first class customer service.
To mark Halloween this year, the dramatic sounds of the historic concert hall’s organ will accompany a screening of the original silent film, Faust (1926) on Saturday 29 October at 7.30pm.
In true 1920’s style, creepy music will be performed as the story unfolds by the accomplished concert organist and silent film accompanist, Donald MacKenzie.
To set the mood at the beginning of the evening, an illusionist will be performing a Victorian style séance. Edinburgh’s own Scott Smith will attempt to bring the macabre history of the site of the concert hall to life on stage. He will be raising the spirits in more ways than one!
The audience is invited to get into the Halloween spirit by dressing up in 1920’s fashion. A prize will be offered for the best outfit and a jazz band will perform in the concert bar from 6.30pm. The audience is encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the music and soak up feel the vintage ambience.
Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convener, said: “A silver screen classic with expert live accompaniment, an illusionist, the chance to don Twenties garb and possibly even commune with some of Edinburgh’s resident spirits – all these elements will make for an unforgettable evening spent in Scotland’s only five star concert hall.”
The original story of Faust by Goethe is considered amongst the best of German literature, and when better to watch the film version than when witches fly and ghouls stalk the streets.
Faust is rated PG. Tickets are £12 and concessions are available.
