Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery in Leith Walk, Edinburgh last night (August 3).

A man walked into William Hill about 9.45pm, produced a gun and demanded money from staff.

After being handed the money, he put the three-figure sum into a dark-coloured plastic bag, and headed south down Leith Walk near Lorne Street.

The suspect is described as being around 5ft 8ins tall, medium build and spoke with a local accent. He was wearing a dark, possibly black, waist-length zip up hooded jacket with a ski mask covering his face.

CCTV and door to door inquiries are underway in the local area.

A police spokesperson said: ‘This has been a terrifying experience for the staff who were working in the shop at the time, and we are appealing for anyone with any information to trace the man responsible to come forward.

‘It was a nice evening last night, and Leith Walk would have been busy. We are asking anyone who was on a bus, in a car or walking in the area at the time and who may recognise the description of the suspect to get in touch with us on 0131 311 3131.’

Anyone with information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in complete confidence and anonymity on 0800 555 111.
