Lothians MSP, Sarah Boyack, has welcomed the announcement that online retailer Amazon is to create 900 jobs in Edinburgh.

The company is to create a new Customer Service Centre at Waverley Gate in the city centre, creating 500 permanent and 400 temporary jobs.  The new centre will handle both telephone and internet based customer queries.

Commenting on the announcement, Ms Boyack, who has lodged a Parliamentary motion welcoming the decision, said:-

“This announcement is excellent news for Edinburgh and sends a clear message that the city is a competitive and attractive destination for companies from across the globe to do business.

“The decision recognises the availability of the high quality workforce in the city and Amazon’s commitment to continuing to expand its operations across Scotland.  It is also good to see so many jobs being created in the city centre, which can be easily accessed by public transport.

“Another factor in the decision to locate in Edinburgh has been the financial support offered by Scottish Enterprise and this is to be welcomed.  The SNP Government must ensure that creating jobs forms the heart of their ambitions for Scotland.  We need a combination of investment from both the Scottish Government and the private sector if we are to emerge stronger from the recession.”
