Pupils from secondary schools across Scotland will enter the dragons’ den at the Changeworks national Make Waste History Summit 2011.

The summit takes place at Edinburgh Napier University on 27 April 2011. The summit is an opportunity for pupils to get equipped with the sustainable skills needed to reduce waste in school and turn their enterprising idea into a reality. Funded by the City of Edinburgh Council, workshops include marketing, finance, evaluation and effectively presenting their enterprising project ideas.

Sixteen school teams will attend workshops to develop their enterprising business ideas and pitch to Dragons, including Suzie McGuiggan Eco-Schools Secondary Schools and Assessment Officer and Lindsey Grant, Senior Development Officer for City of Edinburgh Council. Schools are competing for a cash prize of £250 and will be judged by their peers and the dragons in an electronic vote.

Ally Tibbitt founder of Greener Leith seen here at the Science Festival launch

The day starts with Ally Tibbitt sharing his inspirational story of successful social entrepreneurship with award winning community sustainability development initiative, Greener Leith. Students and teachers will then be engaged in a motivational talk from Live-N-Learn’s Scott Goddard. Ally is now also part of the STV Local Edinburgh team, where he is known by his Sunday name, Alastair Tibbitt.

Enthused by the interest generated by this year’s summit, Changeworks’ Education Officer, Emily Dodd commented: “The seventh Make Waste History Summit is set to be the best yet. We are delighted by the quality of this year’s summit speakers and as always are looking forward to the enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit we know everyone involved in the summit will show to make waste history. With over 1.2 million tonnes of biodegradable waste going to landfill every day from Scotland, it’s time we all took action to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

We look forward to the photos of the event which we will share with you next week.  Here was the 2009 speaker – Jam Boy, Fraser Docherty.
