Hot on the heels of its highly successful production of Footloose,The Musical, at the Church Hill Theatre last Spring Edinburgh Music Theatre now presents, Rent, a rock opera based on Puccini’s La Boheme.

Set in the late 1980s, Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Since its official off-Broadway opening in 1996, Rent went on to win amongst others, a Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show features the hit song Seasons of Love, recorded by many artists and featured in EMT’s tribute to the Movie Musical, “don’t stop the beat” at last year’s Festival Fringe.

Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care?

EMT is proud to be partnering Waverley Care, Scotland’s leading charity providing care and support to people living with HIV and Hepatitis C. In the developed world at least, the emphasis may have changed from dealing with the effects of HIV to living with its stigma, but, with an ageing population, arguably, the message today is as relevant as in the late 1980s.

No day but today.
