Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed in the Leith area of Edinburgh on Saturday evening (July 31).

The 37-year-old had walked from Cadiz Street onto Assembly Street about 6.45pm when a man approached her from behind, nudged her in the back and demanded her purse. She immediately handed it over, and the man ran off towards Elbe Street. A man who was passing by tried to chase the suspect, but lost him when he got to Elbe Street.

The suspect is described as being white, in his 20s, around 5ft 8ins – 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build with messy mousy brown hair. He was clean-shaven, spoke with a local accent, and was wearing a grey-coloured hooded top.

A police spokesperson said: ‘We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and may have seen what happened, to come forward.

‘In particular, we are keen to trace the passer-by who came to the woman’s aid, and chased the suspect.

‘We would also be keen to hear from anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, and who may be able to help.’
