Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Ben Van der Velde: Sidekick

Some people are life’s heroes: leading men and women full of swash, buckle and derring-do. Others just hold their jackets.

Ben Van der Velde has been peeping out through his drawn curtains and isn’t feeling too sure about the future for him, his wife or his vaguely imminent kids. The world seems like a tinderbox ready to explode and he’s not prepared for the fallout. He’s on the hunt for a hero to see him through World War 3 (and possibly 4 or 5), whilst trying to find any upsides in the life of a perennial sidekick.

Join Ben as he salutes the Barney Rubbles, Boo-Boos and Dr Watsons of the world.

Ben Van der Velde is a stand-up comedian, actor, improviser and presenter. He is a regular host and act for respected British comedy clubs such as The Stand, Komedia, the Frog & Bucket and The Boat Show as well as hosting stages for Bestival among other festivals. Ben is currently helmsman of the Chortle Award-winning Good Ship Comedy Club in Kilburn.

Outside the circuit, Ben has performed a voodoo re-marriage ceremony, founded the Church of the Holy Kazoo with comedy legend Mark Thomas, and walked the entire London Underground net- work to raise money for The Refugee Council.

Ben is a regular performer at the Edinburgh Festival, where he has performed three critically-ac- claimed shows. In 2016, his most recent show, Barbarians, received 5 and 4 star reviews, whilst several of its jokes made it into ‘Best Joke at the Fringe’ lists compiled by The Scotsman, i-News and The Huffington Post.

Scottish Beer Tours team up with Barney’s Beer

As of last month, the brewery has officially teamed up with new company Scottish Beer Tours to provide led tours of the site as well as a tasting of their core range beers. Scottish Beer Tours, run by Sara Robertson, started up earlier this year to provide a craft beer experience in the city – a niche which can be seen being filled in most global major cities these days. The tours take full advantage of some of the city’s best craft venues including The Hanging Bat and sister-bar Salt Horse, OX184, Andrew Usher & Co, and of course The Royal Dick Bar. The guides on the walking tours teach groups how to go about tasting beer – utilising all 5 senses – for the best experience, while expanding their knowledge of the brewing process and of Scotland’s fascinating and extensive brewing history.  Tickets for both the brewery and walking tours are sold at www.scot.beer

Speedway – Davey down at Caledonian wash-out

Mitchell Davey praised Edinburgh Monarchs bosses for offering to stage the Caledonian Riders’ Championship

Mitchell Davey had hoped to top the podium in the Caledonian Riders’ Championship but Friday’s big night at Armadale was washed out and the rider anxiously awaits a re-staging date.

The former Glasgow Tigers and Berwick Bandits racer hopes for a break in the weather so he can track for Stoke Potters in their home National League fixture against Cradley on Sunday (6pm).

And the Queensland-born racer is booked for Kent Kings at Belle Vue in Manchester on Wednesday.

Davey admitted to being excited at racing in the National Speedway Stadium.

But the Glasgow-based rider is hugely disappointed at Friday’s Armadale rain-off.

He said: “It was something I was really looking forward to. They’re talking about a new date for the meeting which I’m delighted about.”

Davey believes meetings like this are key to developing speedway and said: “I think it’s important for speedway at this level in Scotland to have meetings like this.

“Credit to Edinburgh for putting it on. It shows real commitment to giving less experienced guys an opportunity to race.”

Next steps on deposit return scheme

Detailed work on how a potential deposit return scheme might operate in Scotland has been commissioned by the Scottish Government.

Deposit return schemes, in existence round the world, see consumers pay a small deposit that is fully refundable once the empty bottle is returned and this, it is believed, can reduce litter and increase recycling.

Roseanna Cunningham, Environment Secretary, confirmed Zero Waste Scotland will investigate design options and the associated costs and benefits of how a deposit return scheme could operate in Scotland’s unique environment.

Options will then be put to the public for consultation before Ministers come to a final decision on the future of deposit return.

Ms Cunningham said: “I am grateful to Zero Waste Scotland for its work so far on deposit return and to everyone who provided evidence to help us better understand the benefits of deposit return for recycling and reducing litter, and potential impacts on retailers and local authorities.

“Clearly there are a number of issues for the Scottish Government to consider when it comes to deposit return schemes that can only be addressed by carrying out work to understand the design of a potential system. I have asked Zero Waste Scotland to start this work.

“Progress will be overseen by a steering group involving representatives from the packaging industry, retailers and environmental groups, and followed by a full public consultation to ensure we are as well-informed as possible before any decisions are made.”

Scottish Labour’s environment and climate change spokesperson Claudia Beamish MSP said: “This is a great step forward. We need to do more to reduce waste in Scotland. That’s why Labour wants to see plastic bottle deposit schemes across Scotland.

“It will be important to ensure that there is assessment of the need for any exemptions as well arrangements for shared collection points for rural areas.

“I look forward to to seeing the model that Zero Waste Scotland produce.”

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Olaf Falafel presents The Marmosets Of My Mind

Critically acclaimed idiot, Olaf Falafel is back with another hour of surreal stupidity.

Who knows what it’ll involve, probably conkers, maybe sandpaper. Whatever it is, he personally guarantees your money back if you actually learn something of any use.

The Marmosets Of My Mind is the follow up to Falafel’s award nominated debut hour,
Olaf Falafel and the Cheese of Truth, and explores the stranger recesses of Olaf’s head
via a blend of stand up, audience interaction, projected video stuff and domestic cleaning products.

As well as finding comedic success onstage (Leicester Square New Comedian 2015 fi-
nalist, Laughing Horse New Act of the Year 2014 runner up, Fosters Golden
Jester 2013 winner), Falafel has also enjoyed online and TV fame on Daniel Tosh’s
Comedy Central show Tosh.0 with his short viral videos.

Olaf’s absurdist movies include a croissant-coiffured talking Donald Trump puppet

(retweeted over 19,000 times, with 23 million views in total at the time of writing), slices of truth telling cheese being thrown onto newspapers and the Bee Gees hiding in beards.

Olaf enjoys an average of over 500 retweets a day for his comedic output and had over
75 million views on the former social media platform Vine.

Falafel has also recently hit the headlines by securing publishing’s fastest ever picture
book deal for his semi-autobiographical masterpiece Old MacDonald Heard A Fart.

Edinburgh Zoo does Trainspotting

It is known as one of the most iconic opening scenes in modern cinema – Trainspotting’s Renton and his hapless sidekick Spud running full tilt along Edinburgh’s Princes Street.

Now, in a hilarious homage to the ‘Choose Life’ scene that kick-started Danny Boyle’s 1996 cult classic, RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has recreated the film’s curtain raiser with panda and penguin mascots reprising the famous sprint.

Shoppers watched in bemusement as the mascots re-enacted Ewan McGregor and Ewen Bremner’s infamous slalom through the Capital during recent filming for the 40-second video. In the video’s opening sequence, the panda drops his bamboo before beginning to race his penguin pal around Edinburgh city centre, finally arriving at Edinburgh Zoo.

The release of the video, premiered on YouTube, marks the launch of the new T2 movie release on DVD as well as the closing weekend of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the start of the Scottish school summer holidays.

The footage is accompanied by an on-screen monologue in the mode of Trainspotting

Choose Scotland, Choose Edinburgh, Choose visiting the giant pandas, Choose meeting a meerkat, Choose brilliant birds, Choose the penguin parade, Choose Tiger Tracks, Choose a great day out, Choose Edinburgh Zoo!

Barbara Smith, Chief Executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), said: “Trainspotting contains some of Edinburgh’s most iconic characters and we decided to bring them together with a few of our own. It’s been tremendous fun making our parody and we hope the public enjoy watching it as much as they enjoy visiting RZSS Edinburgh Zoo this summer.”

Ice hockey – Plews back with Capitals with high hopes

Tyler Plews back with Capitals and looking to the club’s new coach to improve his game

Edinburgh Capitals defenceman Tyler Plews believes new coach Dmitiri Khristich can be the man to bring the best out of him.

The 19-year-old has re-signed for a third season at Murrayfield and keen to kick on after impressing in his previous two campaigns.

And he admits he’s excited to find out who else will be joining the club as excitement builds over the new era in Scotland’s capital.

Plews said: “It was an easy choice to return with the announcement of Dmitri Khristich as head coach.

“Being coached by a person of his calibre will only bring out the best of me as a player.

“Looking at next season, there’s only been a few signings before me but so far its looking good and having Pav (Vorobyev) back is a huge boost.

Plews has made over 100 appearances since signing for the club under Riley Emmerson’s regime and he earned himself a Great Britain call-up to last year’s under-20’s World Championships.

Coach Khristich said: “I’m looking forward to working with Scottish youngsters like Tyler (Plews). I want to work with players who know they have to work hard to play on a regular basis in this league.

“Tyler has good size and, combined with the right attitude, he can progress.”

Capital venues in line for prestigious award

Three Edinburgh venues could win a prestigious Food and Travel Magazine Reader Award.

Wedgwood the Restaurant, The Voyage of Buck and Millers64 have all been short listed and now face a public vote before the final in September.

Wedgwood the Restaurant hopes to defend its crown in the Best Restaurant Outside London category which it successfully won last year.

Paul and Lisa Wedgwood opened the restaurant in 2007 to offer their version of the perfect night out, exemplary service in a relaxed setting.

Wedgwood has been joined by one other Scottish restaurant this year, the Champany Inn in Linlithgow.

Cocktail bar The Voyage of Buck has been recognised in the Bar of the Year category less than a year after it opened.

It is only one of two outside of London to be recognised and it takes its name from fictional character William “Buck” Clarence who inspired the drinks list with his global adventures.

This summer The Voyage of Buck has a special Milan cocktail menu paying homage the gallerias and aperitivo of 1930’s Milan.

Millers64 is a bed and breakfast venue in an up-graded Victorian terrace on Pilrig Street and is the only Scottish venue to be recognised in its category.

The B&B is run by sisters Louise and Shona Clelland who, inspired by their own global travels, wanted to offer the best hospitality experiences for visitors.

Guests of Millers64 are welcomed to one of its two luxuriously finished rooms with freshly-baked shortbread and homemade tablet.

Winners will be presented their awards at a ceremony in London on 18 September and you can vote for these local businesses as well as Edinburgh for Best City at http://foodandtravel.com/awards until the first week in September.

Culture Secretary visits Dublin today

The Culture and External Affairs Secretary Fiona Hyslop is in Dublin today to meet the new Irish Foreign Affairs Minister.  A cabinet reshuffle took place after the election of the new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar last month.

Ms Hyslop said: “Scotland and Ireland already have a strong and long-standing relationship and we want to develop economic, diplomatic and cultural links with our neighbour. We want to make more of the relationship between Scotland, its cities and regions, and those of Ireland – this isn’t just about Edinburgh and Dublin.

“The Scottish Government views Ireland as a key partner within the EU 27 – but it is also important that despite the forthcoming negotiations, relations between our countries do not become too narrowly defined by Brexit.

“While our academic and culture sectors are already collaborating well together, there is potential in the agricultural sector and areas like Ireland’s growing financial services sector. It’s important that we build on this potential and deepen economic ties between the two nations.”

The Cabinet Secretary will undertake a series of cultural site visits, where successful collaborations are taking place with the input of Scottish expertise. She will also host a business breakfast with a range of sector leaders spanning tourism, energy, food and agriculture, finance and the sciences.

Scottish Government starts male vaccination programme

A vaccination programme for men who have sex with men (MSM) has started in Scotland to protect against the HPV (Human Papillomavirus).

The vaccine will be offered to MSM up to and including the age of 45 attending sexual health or HIV clinics.

MSM prisoners aged up to and including 45 years of age will also be eligible to receive the vaccine through prison health services.

Introducing such a programme follows a recommendation by the UK’s independent, expert panel on vaccination matters, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

HPV is the name for a group of viruses, which can lead to genital warts and some forms of cancer. Vaccination helps to provide the best protection against high risk HPV types which can cause cancer.

Aileen Campbell, Public Health Minister, said: “Its introduction is based on the advice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination (JCVI) and Immunisation.

“The JCVI recognises that MSM are a group at high risk of HPV infection and associated disease who receive little indirect health benefit from the existing, highly-successful, HPV vaccination programme for girls.”

Ice hockey – ex-Capitals star has Dundee fans reeling

Former Edinburgh Capitals star Marc Lefebvre stunned Dundee Stars by suddenly quitting the club.

The Canadian has signed for a team in North America and leaves after two years in charge. Lefebvre arrived in Dundee following a spell coaching in Hungary having previously been head coach at Coventry Blaze.

The former Capitals forward replaced Jeff Hutchins who is now an assistant coach at Fife Flyers. Last season, Stars qualified for the play-off semi-finals for the first time where they lost to Cardiff Devils.

His departure has stunned the Dundee support and the move comes as Lefebvre was re-building his squad for next season.

A statement on the club website said: “Dundee Stars can confirm that Marc Lefebvre has left the club with immediate effect. “Marc has agreed terms with a North American organisation. We wish Marc the very best in his future career. “The Dundee Stars are now actively seeking a head coach for the 2017/18 season.”

Chief Medical Officer gives advice on physical activity during pregnancy

The UK’s chief medical officers released new advice on physical activity for expectant mothers, believed to be the first of its kind in the world last week.

The new recommendations aim to reduce issues such as obesity, diabetes and other health concerns during pregnancy.

The latest evidence suggests pregnant women should do around 150 minutes of ‘moderate intensity’ activity every week.

This is described as activity that makes you breathe faster while still being able to hold a conversation.

This new advice is being issued in the form of an infographic aimed at giving health professionals, as well as the leisure sector, the best advice to pass on to pregnant women.

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood said: “We want to make pregnant women aware of the benefits of being active throughout their pregnancy and make sure they’re clear about the type of activities that are safe.

“The latest evidence shows that regular, moderate exercise during pregnancy reduces blood pressure problems, improves fitness, lowers weight gain and reduces the risk of diabetes.

“My advice to pregnant women is to listen to their body and adapt their exercise regime accordingly. If you’re not already active, start gradually – and if you are active, just keep going. If anything feels uncomfortable, then stop and seek advice.”

Women who have not been active before pregnancy are recommended to follow a gradual progression of exercise beginning with ten minute bouts of moderate intensity exercise gradually building up to 150 minutes.

The activity should be spread throughout the week and the government says it is important to remember that every activity counts.

Government set up a fund to support young disabled

Aileen Campbell

Young disabled people will be able to access a £5m fund to help them live more independent lives, Public Health Minister Aileen Campbell announced this week.

The Independent Living Fund (ILF) will provide a short-term award to people aged 16-to-21 to help the transition into adulthood.

It can be used to help the young disabled person to be active, participate and contribute to their local community; aimed at helping them to reach their potential and make a lasting difference to young lives.

It follows the set-up of the Scottish Independent Living Fun, in 2015 following the UK Government’s closure of the previous UK ILF scheme.

Ministers had previously committed that on top of the £47.2m a year of support provided to 2,600 existing Scottish ILF users, extra funding of £5 million would be made available to create a new ILF scheme.

Public Health Minister Aileen Campbell said: “We want everyone in society to have the same quality of life and providing support to disabled people is one of the areas we have worked on.

“This fund will support young disabled people to take up opportunities to contribute to and participate in their communities, to help them live as independently as possible.”

Government to hold consultation on pre-recorded evidence in criminal trials

Views are being sought on the best way to spare child witnesses from having to give evidence during criminal trials.

The consultation seeks views on the Government vision that all child witnesses will have their evidence recorded as early as possible, and asks how a model for prerecording evidence could work best for Scotland.

Michael Matheson

Justice Secretary Michael Matheson said: “Giving evidence to a court can be extremely difficult and emotional for anyone, particularly a child or vulnerable witness.

“Making sure those witnesses feel safe, secure and able to share their account of events effectively not only protects them from ongoing risk, but helps them give the best evidence.

“That is why we are seeking views on reforms which would stop children having to give evidence in court during a criminal trial. This is a positive step in the right direction to protect the most vulnerable.

“This is an ambitious aim and it is likely to take time to fully achieve. But I believe it is vital and necessary that we make this important progressive change whilst also ensuring that the rights of a person accused of a crime are maintained.”

The Scottish Government is already working with partners to encourage earlier pre-recording of evidence as part of the Joint Investigative Interview process.

This includes looking at how practical support is provided and how technology and facilities can be enhanced.

Whilst, the initial focus is on child witnesses, any new model will be flexible enough to accommodate vulnerable adult witnesses in the future. The consultation will run until Friday 29 September.

Speedway – Lawson leads way as Tigers close in on Monarchs

Red-hot Richard Lawson led the charge as Glasgow move closer to Edinburgh Monarchs. Picture by Ian Adam

SGB Championship: Glasgow Tigers 55, Sheffield Tigers 37

Sheffield: Josh Grajczonek 13, Todd Kurtz 3, Lasse Bjerre 13, rider replacement for Josh Bates, Kyle Howarth 6, Rob Branford 1, Nathan Stoneman (guest) 1

Edinburgh Monarchs saw their lead at the top of the SGB Championship shrink to two points.

Glasgow Tigers are hot on their heels after a 55-37 win at Ashfield over Sheffield Tigers.

Richard Lawson powered to 14 points and the Cumbrian racer was backed by a solid performance from the seven-man squad.

Glasgow have 39 points from 16 matches and have three matches in hand over Monarchs, their arch rivals.

They moved above Ipswich Witches into second spot despite former Ashfield favourite Josh Grajczonek collecting 13 points for the visitors.

The home side got into gear from the off, winning the first heat 4-2 and the second race 5-1 for a 9-3 lead.

Two 4-2 scorelines followed and they were 17-7 ahead after Heat Four.

A 5-1 in the tenth race courtesy of Lawson and Nike Lunna handed Glasgow a 41-21 lead and there was no way back.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Prom Kween

From the team who brought you the sell-out hits Dizney Rascal; Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho and How to Win Against History; winner of a VAULT Festival Comedy Award and an Underbelly Untapped Award…

Inspired by true events, Prom Kween tells the story of Matthew Crisson, the first ever boy to win the coveted US high school title…and the bitches who tried to stand in his way.

With an original book and score by musical comedy award winning duo Rebecca Humphries and Joanna Cichonska, Prom Kween is a coming of age comedy for those who hit that age years ago. It’s got it all; the jocks, the nerds, the mean girls…and RuPaul Charles. Yes, Hunties – RuPaul Charles.

Part parody, part homage to the American High School genre Prom Kween also satirises modern day America and it’s contradictions surrounding what is acceptable. This is a country whose President wants to build a border wall with Mexico, while the highest rated reality programme is a race to become America’s next famous drag queen. Prom Kween celebrates the country’s contradictions…while obviously ripping it to shreds.

It’s a show for any kid who took their glasses off and still didn’t look pretty.

Any kid who couldn’t understand why being a bitch made boys like you.
Any kid who questioned what it meant to be beautiful.
It’s a story of falling in love; with who you are.

In 2014 Rebecca Humphries, Jo Cichonska and Sam Swann came together with the aim to reinvent musical comedy. Their debut show Dizney Rascal subsequently sold out the entire Edinburgh run, was the Scotsman’s ‘Pick of the Fringe’ and was performed live on BBC3’s

‘Edinburgh Comedy Spectacular’ which led to a UK tour. Rebecca went on to win the 2015 Musical Comedy Award, scooping both the Judges’ first prize and the Audience’s favourite. Prom Kween is their highly anticipated follow up.

In 2016 they joined forces with renowned producer/fellow lover of the form, Áine Flanagan (Margaret Thatcher: Queen of Soho, How to Win Against History), and as a unit they intend to set the
Edinburgh Fringe festival ablaze with their unique passion for all things fabulous as they did at the
VAULT Festival earlier this year!

The Development of the show has kindly been supported by Harlow Playhouse, Hackney Showroom and StageOne.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Carmen Lynch: LYNCHED

“I don’t think I’m going to live a long life because I’ve never seen any really tall old ladies.”

In her UK debut hour LYNCHED, Carmen Lynch (The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) shares her twisted, singular stand-up comedy that frequently dips into the dark side. Childless and drug-free (but only because of her heart murmur), she’ll share her views on Jesus, giraffes, scoliosis, her Spanish mother, and very often, death.

Carmen Lynch comes to the Edinburgh Fringe after enjoying a host of high profile tele- vision appearances. As well as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and twice on The Late Show with David Letterman, she has been featured on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Conan, @midnight (Comedy Central), Inside Amy Schumer, and The Good Wife.

On the big screen Carmen appeared in Miu Miu’s series of Women’s Tales directed by Chloë Sevigny entitled Carmen.

Carmen has performed for US troops in Iraq and Kuwait, and continues to tour in Spanish- speaking countries doing standup in Spanish. When she isn’t on the road, Carmen can usually be found at The Comedy Cellar in NYC.

Government welcomes new figures on positive destinations for university graduates

Higher Education Minister Shirley-Anne Somerville has welcomed the publication of new statistics showing 91 per cent of Scotland’s university graduates are going into positive destinations.

Statistics released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that Scotland’s graduates have maintained a high percentage of leavers going into work or further study and a higher median salary for full-time first degree leavers compared to the other nations of the UK.

The report also highlights that 93 per cent of those that studied a ‘Science subject’ have gone on to employment, further study or a combination of the two, the highest level of all the UK countries.

Shirley-Anne Somerville – SNP – Dunfermline

Ms Somerville, said: “These are very positive statistics with 91 per cent of our university graduates are going into positive destinations, either work or further study.

“I am in no doubt that the thousands of students who are graduating this summer and completing their courses can take heart in these findings, knowing that their hard work and determination has been worth it and that they have positive opportunities to look forward to.

“The statistics also show a very optimistic story for those who studied Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) qualifications which shows our commitment to increasing participation in these subjects is delivering real results.”

Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease causing inflammation and ulcers in the bowel which can lead to urgent and frequent diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, pain, profound fatigue and anaemia.  It is largely a hidden disease that can cause stigma, fear and isolation.

Sam Afhim, Director of Income Generation, Crohn’s and Colitis UK, said: “We want to raise vital funds and awareness for the people struggling with IBD and the devastating effects it can have on people and their families. At Crohn’s & Colitis UK, we want to spread the word that there is support and there are other people in the same situation – which is why our WALK IT fundraising events are so important in bringing everyone together.”

Funds raised through WALK IT directly enable the charity to carry out vital new research, answer more calls from people needing help and provide patient packs to hospitals across the UK, amongst others.

With music, entertainment and refreshments at each walk, the events will have a fun, feel-good atmosphere. Join us as we Walk IT together; challenging stigma, standing strong and raising vital funds for the fight against Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Andrew Doyle: Thought Crimes

Andrew Doyle doesn’t know his left from his right. But then, neither does anyone else. A staunch left-winger, Andrew has somehow found himself accused of being on the Dark Side. Partly it’s because he’s the only left-wing comic who openly opposes the EU, or maybe it’s because he co-wrote a viral video after the US election which was widely shared by the pro-Trump “alt-right”. Either way, in the current political climate, does “left” or “right” even mean anything anymore?

They say you should never talk about politics or religion in polite company. Andrew isn’t very polite, so he likes to talk about both. In this new show, he discusses the downsides of being honest about your political views, especially when it comes to sustaining fragile relationships with friends and a conservative Catholic family. He’ll also be asking where the left went wrong, and why they don’t want to argue with anyone anymore. He’ll be healing old wounds and al- most certainly making a few fresh ones in the process.

As well as a being a Fringe regular (with runs transferring to the Soho Theatre), Andrew is the co-writer of internet sensation Jonathan Pie, the spoof news reporter created by Tom Walker. Andrew started writing for Pie in December 2015, and since then has collaborated with Tom on weekly online videos and a live show which toured the UK culminating in a sell-out performance at the London Palladium. Their online video responding to the US election result has had in excess of 130 million views.

His plays include Borderland (national tour for 7:84, Scotland), Jimmy Murphy Makes Amends (BBC Radio 4) and The Second Mr Bailey (BBC Radio 4). He is currently working on a new play Reacher’s Point which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2017. He is also currently working on a musical adaptation of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn for the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, in collaboration with platinum-selling singer/songwriter Duke Special.

His wife threatened to take a show with this title to Edinburgh, so David got in first.

David Ephgrave is a comedian, writer, actor, musician and pauper – and back end of the comic duo Doggett & Ephgrave. Tickets here.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 – Creatives

Following a critically-acclaimed season earlier this year at The Chicago Theatre Workshop, Irvine Welsh and Don De Grazia’s brand new musical, Creatives, will have its UK premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Paul Brenner’s song writing class is a cross-section of the Chicago music scene, with all its incestuous dysfunction, navel-gazing narcissism, bitterness, and occasional brilliance.

When former student, pop star Sean O’Neil, visits this group of musicians to judge a contest, the stakes are suddenly raised to new levels when both revenge and jealousies come to the fore.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017: Colin Cloud – Dare

Colin Cloud returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with his highly-anticipated brand new show.

Having completed totally sold-out seasons at Edinburgh Fringe since 2014 and the Adelaide Fringe 2016 he has appeared in The Illusionists Live from Broadway and London’s West End, and will be returning to the city direct from a 6-month tour of America.

His outrageous stunts on TV and the world’s largest stages have left celebrities and audiences shaken to their core.

DARE will make no exception to this rule.

As the master of the unconscious, Colin Cloud will calculate the future and deduce your intimate thoughts. Like Sherlock Holmes, he’ll push his skills to the limit and let you see how he uses his almost superhuman abilities in the real world.

Be involved in a life-enhancing experience of epic proportions as Cloud explores key elements of human nature: persona, identity, group-bonding, tribalism and cults.

Colin Cloud will ask members of the audience to put their life in his hands. Will they succumb to his outrageous suggestions? We DARE you to find out.

Colin Cloud is known around the world as the man who can reveal your deepest, darkest secrets. As intense as a hypnotist, as witty as a comedian, as alluring as Sherlock Holmes, he causes amazement (and a few red faces) wherever he goes.

A popular guest on ITV’s This Morning (his revelation of Holly Willoughby’s embarrassing childhood memory about a trampoline went viral) Cloud has also appeared on The One Show (BBC), Loose Women (ITV) and The Steve Wright Show (BBC Radio 2). He also appeared with Sherlock co-creator and writer, Mark Gaits, in the online lead-up to The Abominable Bride, the Sherlock Christmas Special for BBC1.

Hearts Win at Livingston as Gary Locke Returns to Tynecastle

Hearts have announced that former player, captain and Head Coach Gary Locke is to return to Tynecastle as a Principal Ambassador. Locke, who was sacked by Hearts when Ann Budge took control of the club three years ago, has left his coaching role at Cowdenbeath.

Locke, a popular figure among the Hearts support, will take up a full-time position in the club’s commercial department.  One of his main roles will involve the building a new Ambassadors and Legends programme to support the continued growth of the club’s increasingly successful hospitality business, as well as the rapidly developing Heritage section of the club.

Meanwhile, Hearts fielded some players on the fringes of the first team as they defeated Livingston 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at the Tony Macaroni Stadium on Saturday. New signing Cole Stockton scored the only goal. Players such as Conor Sammon and Jordan McGhee – now returned from loan periods at Kilmarnock and Middlesbrough respectively – were included.

New environment convener gets down to the dirty work

New councillor and Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes has already ingratiated herself with some North Edinburgh residents by dealing swiftly with their complaints about uncollected rubbish this week.

The matter first came to light during our live blog on Thursday morning when we were covering the council meeting.

Mark Pearson of Telford Road tweeted us to  say that he hoped the bins outside his house would get emptied as it had been a whole month since any rubbish had been removed.

Edinburgh Council were quick to respond with a tweet asking him to get in touch if nothing was taken away. Mark said that he had phoned 10 times in the last four weeks to get the rubbish moved.

He also pointed out that this problem has been ongoing for about three years, and explained that bin lorry drivers said they had difficulty getting turned there, but that he had CCTV footage showing they did not even try.

Robert Pearson, Chair of Tenants and Residents in Muirhouse (TRIM) and Friends of West Pilton, tweeted that if Mark did not get the matter resolved he could help as Drylaw Residents have CCTV footage. This video apparently shows that the drivers did not try to get into the street at all.

Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP for the area also responded on Twitter saying he would help if the rubbish did not get moved. He said : ‘The eyesore of waste and recycling bins which are not uplifted is a regular occurrence now across West Edinburgh, but in Drylaw, which often feels overlooked by city leaders, the problem has reached a new low. ‘This council administration has to get the basics right first and so far we see no sign of that.’

But then we tweeted to new Transport and Environment Convener Lesley Macinnes asking if she could perhaps help.

Councillor Macinnes photographed earlier in the week with Transport Minister Humza Yousaf

By today all is lovely and clean outside Mark’s house – the rubbish has been moved and the street has been swept. Mark sent us a screenshot of the council workmen who did such a great job.

A street sweeping machine was also deployed

Councillor Macinnes said on Friday :  “The bins in question were collected this morning and I apologise for any inconvenience caused before this. We’re aware of ongoing problems with on-street parking, which often prevents access by refuse collection vehicles. We’re working hard to resolve this and I will aim to keep the affected residents updated.”

Well done Councillor Macinnes! You have certainly made one resident very happy.

Councillor Young who is one of the Liberal Democrat councillors for Almond Ward raised the matter of waste collection at Thursday’s full council meeting in a question to the Convener of Transport and Environment. The answer given was that there will be improvements made in the ICT system to allow those operating the service to record collection issues en route. The hope is that this will provide accurate information to customers complaining and perhaps avoid the need for any complaints at all in time.

One further issue appears to be the employment of agency staff and the council will be recruiting new staff to avoid using temporary operators in future.

Conservative Councillor Joanna Mowat asked a question of the Convener at Thursday’s meeting requesting information about complaints over missed bin collections. Cllr Macinnes replied that there were 1633 complaints in the second week in January which was the highest number in any given week in the last six months.

There was a total of 3,824 complaints from January 2017 to 23 June 2017 about brown bins alone, and a total of 21,695 complaints over the period. This is less than in 2016 but more than in 2015 as you will see from the graph below.

Government Fire safety review continues

There was a second meeting of a Ministerial Working Group convened to examine building and fire safety regulatory frameworks this week.

The meeting was chaired by Communities Secretary Angela Constance along with Housing Minister Kevin Stewart and Community Safety Minister Annabelle Ewing. They were joined by Scottish Government officials and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

This group is overseeing a review of building and fire safety regulatory frameworks with an initial focus on high rise domestic buildings, following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in London.

The Ministers recognised and praised the work of local authorities and private property owners to carry out resource intensive checks of their buildings.

The group was updated on the latest actions being taken by the Scottish Government, local authorities, the fire and rescue service as well as other building owners across the country.

Checks so far by local authorities have found that:

•No Scottish local-authority owned school buildings above 18 metres have the type of cladding reported to have been used on the Grenfell tower – aluminium composite material (ACM).
•No high rise domestic buildings owned by councils or housing associations have used ACM cladding.
•29 of 32 local authorities have reported that ACM cladding has not been used on any privately owned high-rise domestic buildings. Edinburgh and Glasgow are completing their investigations and it was acknowledged this will take time due to due to the numbers involved.

In addition the Group heard that:

•Building standards systems and regulations for high rise domestic properties in Scotland means the type of product used on Grenfell Tower should not be used in their cladding systems.

•All health boards have confirmed that none of their buildings use the cladding type reported to have been used on Grenfell Tower.

•The Scottish Government has asked the Scottish Funding Council to write to Universities Scotland and Colleges Scotland to ensure all colleges and universities are taking forward an assessment of their estate. Some have already started this work.

•ACM cladding found on a halls of residence in Edinburgh is being removed as a precaution and officials are keeping in close contact with the City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh Napier University to understand more fully the reasons behind why this material was used.

•In some controlled circumstances specified by our building regulations, ACM can be used as part of the cladding systems of other buildings. Our building regulations specify that those cladding systems must meet the relevant technical requirements applicable in each case.

•The group discussed its work plan including a fire safety campaign and an expedited consultation on standard requirements for smoke and fire detection in all high rise domestic properties.

•The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service provided a briefing on their work and said an additional 300 operational assurance visits have been carried out since the Grenfell Tower fire, and 230 additional home fire safety visits to residents in high-rise buildings.

Ms Constance said: “While we continue to be confident that we have stringent building and fire safety regulations which contribute to keeping people safe, following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower it is imperative that we undertake a thorough and critical review of our regulations.

“The group today agreed to continue with the evidence led approach that has been followed since the Grenfell Tragedy. This has meant the initial priority focus was on high-rise domestic properties, then on other priority areas including schools and hospitals.

“We will continue to prioritise and are now looking at the next areas of focus which will be any high-rise properties where people sleep overnight that have not already been captured by local authority’s initial investigations. We’ll also look at other properties where there are expected to be vulnerable people living.

“I’d like to thank all local authorities, the fire and rescue service, housing associations and numerous other building owners across Scotland who are working extremely hard at the moment to reassure the public about the safety of their buildings.

“We’ll continue this partnership to ensure collectively we are doing our utmost to reassure members of the public of the safety of Scotland’s buildings.”

Government to focus on ‘modern and person-centred’ care

Transforming services to ensure people with dementia receive the support they need at all ages and stages of the illness is at the centre of Scotland’s third dementia strategy.

The government says that the three key priorities under the new three-year strategy are continuing timely, person-centred and consistent treatment and care for people living with dementia and their carers, in all settings, more progress on the provision of support after diagnosis and throughout the disease, taking account of individual needs and circumstances and responding to the increasing proportion of older people developing dementia later in life, often alongside other chronic conditions

Maureen Watt, Minister for Mental Health, launched the plans while meeting representatives of the Scottish Dementia Working Group at a GP practice in Portobello this week. The practice is one of the first in Scotland to run post diagnostic support for dementia in a primary care setting.

She said: “Ten years on from making dementia a national priority, good progress has been made in how we diagnose, treat and care for those affected.

“Therefore, I am pleased to publish this third dementia strategy, which I am sure will continue to drive progress and build further on our achievements so far.

“I am determined that we do more to make dementia care person-centred, responsive to the needs and circumstances of individuals, delivering the support they need from the moment of diagnosis and throughout their lives.

“We will work in partnership with integration authorities, care providers, dementia charities and carers’ organisations to deliver this strategy. And most importantly, close engagement with people with dementia, their families and carers will be at the heart of our approach.”

Henry Simmons, Chief Executive of Alzheimer Scotland, said: “We welcome this progressive and ambitious strategy which will build on existing guarantees and take us closer to delivering a high quality, person-centred service for people with dementia and their families from the point of diagnosis to the end of life.

“However, it requires local areas throughout Scotland to maintain and increase their investment in dementia care, as the gap between policy and practice in some places is far too wide.

“We recognise the good work taking place in many areas and would call on all integration authorities to follow this, ensuring that delivery of this strategy is given priority and resources so the aspirations become the reality for people living with dementia.”
