Three people, including a child, have been hospitalised after the ceiling of a newsagent’s in Edinburgh collapsed.

At around 7pm last night, emergency services were called to Bishop’s Newsagents in Leith, where clouds of dust were seen coming from the building.

Two adults and one child were treated at the scene and rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile, shopkeeper Mohammed Sajid told the Edinburgh Evening News he thought he was going to die after being pinned to the ground.

“It came down on top of me and put me to the ground,” he told the paper.

“There were three or four other people in the shop and they all managed to escape.

“But I was trapped inside and I had to fight my way out of the debris. I thought I was going to die.”

Mr Sajid was eventually able to free himself from the debris inside the shop before police closed the road to deal with the incident.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were able to quickly secure the scene after mobilising three appliances and specialist services.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.57pm on Wednesday, 30 September, to reports of a ceiling collapse at a commercial property on Constitution Street in Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and specialist services to the scene and firefighters isolated the electricity to the building and made the area safe.

“Three casualties, including two adults and one child, were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene around 8pm.”

Bishop’s Newsagents is on the corner of the busy Constitution Street and Bernard Street, by the Shore.

Witnesses who were in the area at the time of the collapse told the Evening News they saw customers coming out of the shop covered in dust.

Plaster was seen spilling out from the shop onto the street.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7:05pm aon 30 September to attend an incident on Constitution Street, Edinburgh.

“An ambulance and two special operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched to the scene. Three patients were transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.”

During the incident, Police Scotland closed the road while casualties were treated and the scene was secured.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7pm on Wednesday, 30 September, 2026, officers received a report of a roof having collapsed on Constitution Street, Edinburgh.

“The road was closed and later reopened.”
