Edinburgh Falcons cycle speedway prospect, Nathan Slight, competed with distinction in the British indoor championships at Coventry by qualifying for the under-14 final.
Nathan, a student at Preston Lodge HS, also took part in the under-16 event, picking up useful experience especially with European Championships due to be held in England this year.
Nathan’s dad, Calum, said: “Racing indoors is totally different from outside tracks and the under-16’s was a big jump from his age group.
“So Nathan did really well in the two day event where races start virtually from aqainst a wall so as to take advantage of a full straight.
“That means mastering a new technique while for indoor racing a lot of preparation is based on sanding down tyres, keeping them warm to get proper grip.
“Nathan could ride a bike aged to and was always keen to follow me into cycle speedway.
“Coincidentally we both gained our first international caps aged 13 and Nathan has done well in the Falcons senior team here he specialises in team racing; he is very good at reading races and spotting gaps in support of his fellow rider.
“Last year he had a crack at world age-groups against riders from Australia, Poland etc.
“This is another step forward and in his under-14 final, after qualifying, he picked up six points from his five rides which was a good return against riders from as far apart as East Anglia and Exeter etc.”
Falcons, who race at Redbraes Park, Powerhall, hailed the outcome of their young prodigy’s initiative on-line.
A spokesperson said: “A huge achievement and a testament to Nathan’s hard work, talent, and determination.”
