Edinburgh-based youth curling team Kay/Brown and Currie Chieftains under-15 rugby club are among six beneficiaries of grants of up to £1,000 from an annual fund created by the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA).

The donations will be used for new strips, training tops or equipment.

The SPOA received a high volume of applications fAwor the Youth Sports Sponsorship programme and it was challenging to select the final six successful recipients, explained David Jarvie, President of the SPOA. He said: “Following the success of the first year of the Youth Sports Sponsorship programme in 2025, we were keen to build on this foundation.

“Launching ahead of the ‘summer of sport’ this year, it was clear that grassroots sports for young people in Scotland is more popular than ever and that the need for financial support has never been higher.

“Reflecting the diversity of sport in Scotland, we are delighted to award funding not only to staple sports such as rugby and football, but also to clubs that champion more niche sports for young people including curling and bowling.”

Currie Chieftains play in the Inspiresport East Youth Leagues and will kick off their campaign against Portobello on Saturday.

The young curlers ended last season playing in a tournament in Budapest where they defeated opponents from Slovenia, Croatia and Poland.

Other nominees for the awards were Laurieston bowling club, near Falkirk, Stirling County under-15 rugby team, Blackburn United FC 2015 boys and under-12 girls, Stoneywood Parkvale FC.
