Former Berwick Bandits speedway racer Leon Flint has been named in Great Britain’s World Cup Final team along with Robert Lambert, Charles Wright, Adam Ellis and Tom Brennan.
They face a tough task in Warsaw’s PGE Narodowy Stadium where a crowd of 50,000 will watch them take on Poland, Denmark and Australia.
The Poles, led by six-times World Champion Bartosz Zmaslik, are hot favourites to lift the crown, but it’s another landmark in the career of the former Berwick Academy pupil.
The 23-year-old took his first tentative laps around Shielfield Park on a 125cc bike just over a decade ago and made his professional debut as a 15-year-old with Birmingham in 2018, joining his home-town club in the second tier the following season.
Flint went on to captain the Borders side before moving to Glasgow Tigers three seasons ago and he also rides for Sheffield in the British Premiership, Landshut in the Polish League and recently joined Swedish club Vastervick.
Capped extensively at age-group level by Great Britain, Flint helped his country through a tricky semi-final and pushed his case for selection by finishing third in the British Championship two weeks ago.
Flint said: “It’s going to be tough with some of the best riders in the world lining up on Saturday, but that’s where I want to be, on the big stage.”
