The official Funniest Joke of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival may no longer be open for public voting, but tasty savoury snack-makers, Higgidy, believe some of the biggest laughs don’t just come from the professionals.

To celebrate the opening day of the Edinburgh Fringe, Higgidy gave festival-goers the chance to prove just how funny they really are – by telling their best joke in return for a free Higgidy snack.

Known for bringing people together over great food, Higgidy set up their Airstream pop up snack-shop on Friday 7th August in the heart of St James Quarter, close to all the festival action. Fringe Headliner and comedian Mark Watson joined the lunchtime rush, inviting festival visitors to step up to the mic and deliver their best gags. Mark selected his favourite jokes throughout the day, and every brave participant who took to the mic received a free Higgidy snack.

Mark Watson said: “It was great to see people getting up and getting a laugh from the audience. It takes courage to do that and it was lovely to see Higgidy getting involved and celebrating comedy.

There could only be one winner though, and I picked this joke because it didn’t just make me laugh out loud – it also had the whole crowd giggling too: “Why did the Turkey cross the road? …….because it was the Chicken’s day off!”
