Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is inarguably the epic event of the summer, bringing Homer’s saga to life in the first film ever to be entirely shot on IMAX 70mm film cameras.
Nolan and his team invented contraptions on-the-fly to make this possible, including a massive mirror network held in a tent, made so that the actors could still look at each other while shooting despite the enormity of the cameras.
So after all this, Filmhouse say they are “extremely proud and excited” to screen the latest in Nolan’s incredible series of blockbusters as the director intended, from the only 70mm film print in Edinburgh.
Filmhouse has the technology to screen films from 70mm, 35mm, 16mm and 8mm film formats on original set of projectors, along with a brand new set of laser projectors for digital screenings. Since reopening in June 2025, as the only cinema capable of screening 70mm film in Edinburgh, Filmhouse have screened 6 films from the format.
These include recent Best Picture Oscar winners One Battle After Another, The Brutalist, and Oppenheimer, and most recently Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey as part of their recent first birthday celebrations. With The Odyssey set to make it a lucky 7 from 70mm, they are set up for what looks to be their biggest opening weekend yet as it opens from Friday.
The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the heroic Greek king of Ithaca, as he embarks on a 10-year-long journey to arrive home folling the 10-year-long Trojan war and reunite with his wife Penelope. While Odysseus is waylaid by mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, sirens, and the nymph Calypso, Penelope finds herself fending off suitors that have presumed Odysseus dead. Meanwhile, their son Telemachus is determined to find his father.
The film features an all-star cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, alongside Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.
