Edinburgh South women’s footballers will play in Barclay’s League Division One next season after beating Giffnock SC 5-0 in a promotion play-off at Stenhousemuir.

Two goals from Anna Hume inside the opening 20 minutes, a third from Jodie Sharp early in the second half and then an Emma Hume double after coming off the bench secured the spoils for a team who only played their first competitive match in 2021.

Opponents in the upper strata will include St Mirren and Queen of the South while the team face some long trips including the Inverurie.

Head coach Alfie Smith said: “I couldn’t be happier for the players. Winning the SWFL East title was brilliant. But knowing we still had to win a play-off to achieve promotion – which was always our goal – meant we needed to stay focused. The players did that. Mission accomplished.

“We’ve got a really good squad here, full of players capable of competing at a higher level. And we’ll be recruiting to strengthen for the next challenge. The hard work has begun already. Well, once we get our Player of the Year awards out of the way!”
