Some 15 months after raising the £100,000 necessary to maintain the facility allowing bulldozers to move in Juniper Green tennis club will officially open their two refurbished courts with an Open Day on Sunday.
Cutting the ribbon will be the area’s former MSP, Sue Webber, who is credited as being an ardent supporter of a project which required the club to match a £50,000 Lawn Tennis Association grant.
A fifth of this amount was due to a legacy from a local coal merchant with the remainder realised through the generosity of the local community including sponsors, club chair-person Paul Murphy playing a key role.
The afternoon will begin at 2pm with a short opening ceremony led by Sue Webber. Following this, coach Kenny Petrie will run a series of free junior coaching sessions, designed to inspire the next generation of players. From 4 pm onwards, the courts will be open for everyone – members, families, and guests.
And it wouldn’t be a tennis occasion without lashings of complimentary strawberries and cream being on offer.
