Winchburgh Cricket Club had a double celebration to mark re-emerging for the first time in 75 years.
A three wicket win over Boroughmuir 3rds in Division Nine of the East League – you’ve got to start somewhere! – marked the club’s first ever competitive outing.
And earlier luminaries from local cricket, members and representatives of Winchburgh Developments gathered for a game to mark the opening of an all weather pitch the latter organisation had provided at Auldcathie Park.
In the league win Winchburgh won the toss and opted to bowl and for a while the visitors looked set for a 200+ total.
However helped by what onlookers described as a stunning catch by Musadiq Syed the Capital side were reeled in and eventually dismissed for 155.
In the Winchburgh reply Sai Varnsi played a captain’s innings of 61 not out to steer his side home on an occasion marked by centenary celebrating ‘Muir making a presentation to the league newcomers.
As for the impromptu encounter Winchburgh Developments CEO John Hamilton was among those taking part with East president Peter Kingsbury and Keith Oliver, OBE, Trustee of the Cricket Development Trust Scotland, also in attendance alongside club chair Veeraragavan Raghawan.
