The Edinburgh and Lothians Regional Equality Council (ELREC) held their AGM on Monday night opening with a tribute to their former Chair, Professor Sir Geoff Palmer, OBE,KT, who died last year.
Foysol Choudhury, MBE, chaired the meeting, and led the appreciative comments about Sir Geoff who he personally regarded as a father figure. As an honorary member and one of ELREC’s founding figures in the 1970s, Sir Geoff’s influence has been deeply woven into the organisation’s history. All attendees observed a minute’s silence in his memory.
Presentations included updates on addressing hate crime from Police Scotland, and researchers Lucien Station Foster and Sholen Macpherson who are collaborating with ELREC on the experiences of Black and racial minorities in Edinburgh and Lothians.
Local elected members attending included Cllrs Cammy Day, Katrina Faccenda and Tim Pogson.
Reports were presented on the work which ELREC has undertaken in the past twelve months which includes women’s wellbeing projects, community workshops, creative initiatives, and cycling programmes.
A spokesperson for ELREC said: “Despite facing capacity challenges, ELREC remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering communities, building skills, and breaking down barriers. Through continued collaboration and partnership, the organisation is dedicated to fostering inclusion and creating equal opportunities for all.”
