Regardless of the result a sustained fund raising effort by the Penicuik-Leith women’s rugby team will pay dividends in the form of a trip to Orkney this weekend.

Drawn against the island team in the Scottish women’s plate competition the combined side realised that they had to raise £11,000 less a £5500 governing body contribution to fulfil the fixture.

It seemed a daunting task especially for team treasurer and player Hannah Young who was one week into the post.

However, a variety of fund raisers were identified notably a Try-Athlon organised by Leith WXV co-captain, Caitlin Wilkinson.

She says: “We covered the 308 miles from Leith to Orkney swimming, running and cycling in just one day.

“Our 14 swimmers had to swim 10 miles – 58 lengths of the pool at Bannatyne Health Club who kindly made facilities available – and we had 18 cyclists completing roughly 17km each either on road or stationary bikes.

“On top of all that our running group covered around 100 miles in total.”

The fund raising didn’t end there with 150 e-mails sent by Hannah Young realising 25 sponsors totally £1200.”

Also, a “bucket shake” at Tesco Penicuik £682.62.

Looking ahead to Saturday Caitlin says: “We go into this game not only as our last game of the Plate competition but out last game as a combined side.

“We want to leave everything out there.

“No matter the result we’ll be celebrating a tremendous team effort.”

Ian Watson, Penicuik women’s head coach said: “Regardless of the result at the final whistle we want the women to have enjoyed the opportunity to travel and play in the Plate competition with their friends.”
