There is a new bakery opening on Morrison Street on Friday morning serving a range of baked goods including sausage rolls, pies, and cakes.
The pies will be well known to people who go to the markets in Edinburgh, but Kelsey Garthwaite, who formerly traded as the Pie Dolly, and a regular at both Stockbridge and Leith Markets, is behind the store, and this is her first brick-and-mortar effort.
After trading at the markets for ten years, Kelsey and her team decided to open a permanent location.
The shop, painted yellow, is in a prime location to pick up commuter trade and is situated in a unit formerly occupied by Nice Times Bakery and, before that, Morrison’s Bakery.
Some of their specialties include the pecan and honey caramel bun, the wild boar, apple, hazelnut, and rosemary sausage roll, the pork pie with chilli jam and apple, and the turmeric cauliflower pie.
Speaking on Thursday, Kelsey said: “We have a stall at Stockbridge Market and Leith Market and we’ve been doing that for ten years, and this is our first shop that we’re opening.
“We’ll be selling pies and sausage rolls, and buns, and nice cakes and nice coffee.
“We hope you like it.”
Kelsey said she has never been a fan of the name Pie Dolly due to misunderstandings around the name’s meaning.
The move to a permanent location seemed a good opportunity to change the name, and she landed on Jeannie’s bakery after a friend of hers who passed away last year.
In a statement online, she said: “I knew that when we opened a brick-and-mortar shop that I would want to change the name.
“And so we went with Jeannie’s Bakery – named after my friend Jean who we sadly lost last year.
“She was an amazing baker and just an all-round amazing person.
“I hope the shop does her justice and I hope we have at least one person come through the door on Friday.”
