Planning applications lodged with the council’s planning department up to this week are detailed in the list embedded below.

Applications which are of interest this week include:

  • There is an application by Balerno Village Trust to add solar PV cells to a flat roof at Balerno Police Station on Bridge Street.
  • An application has been made to install a new glass lift at the Signet Library in Parliament Square which will make the building accessible for the first time.
  • An application has been made to form a hotel with café/bar area in the roof at 204 Rose Street by Laclan Stewart of Anta Scotland Ltd, the owners of the property, with associated change of use application.
  • Hotel Indigo on York Place has applied for permission to form a single storey extension to the rear of the building.
  • An application has been made to change the use of the building at 5-6 The Shore to a mixed use building. This is the former George Brown building which has already opened as a venue. We have asked Custom Lane, which runs Brown’s of Leith under the creative direction of Gunnar Groves-Raines, for comment on the timing of the application.

Any property owner seeking to build, improve or alter their home or commercial premises must have the correct consents. This begins with a planning application and usually progresses all the way to a completion certificate.

Some applications for large developments such as purpose built student accommodation have been referred to the government Reporter after refusal by the council. Alterations to some buildings may also need listed building consent which is dealt with simultaneously.

There is a class of alterations which are considered “permitted developments” and will not need any planning permission. There is more guidance here.
