Following a successful Open Day at their new West Bowling Green Street premises Salle Holyrood fencing club are offering incentives for newcomers to take up the sport.

In mid-January a block of four free taster sessions will be on offer for both adults and children.

The adult sessions take place from 16 January (1.15-2.25) with separate sessions for 8-12 year-olds from 19 January (5.45-7pm).

Coach and committee member, Paul Stanbridge, said: “There was a great atmosphere at Salle Holyrood Fencing Club’s Open Day as the club celebrated the opening of its new dedicated fencing centre in the heart of Edinburgh. The event drew people from across the city, with nearly 40 visitors participating in ‘have a go’ fencing, demonstrations from some of the club’s best fencers, and enjoying a gorgeous spread of food from Cammafi of Musselburgh.

“Salle Holyrood has come a long way since coaches Sean Walton and British champion Keith Cook founded it back in 2011. The club has grown into one of Scotland’s most successful fencing clubs, welcoming everyone from children taking their first steps in the sport right through to elite competitors at junior, senior and veteran events.

“Open Day visitors discovered what makes fencing such an addictive sport…. the mix of speed, tactical thinking, and camaraderie. Now we’ve got our own permanent space, the club’s future looks bright for inspiring the next generation of Edinburgh fencers. Congratulations went to Ezani, who won a month’s free membership in the prize draw.“
