The Scottish Government delivered more than 39,000 Baby Boxes to parents in 2025.

There are now 365,000 children who have been given a box, supporting them to have the best start in life since the programme was introduced in 2017.

The programme is backed by almost £8 million in funding in 2025-26, and helps to ensure that every family has access to items needed in the first six months of a child’s life, as well as a safe space to sleep.

Marking the milestone as the new year begins, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said: “The Baby Box programme – the only one in the UK – shows our determination that every child, regardless of their circumstances, should get the best start in life.

“I would encourage anyone expecting to become a parent in 2026 to take advantage of the programme and sign up for a Box – which can benefit them by £400 per child.

“We are working on proposals to enhance the contents of the Box by the end of this Parliament, based on feedback from parents and frontline practitioners working with families, to strengthen the support children receive from birth.”

The Baby Box includes items which support breastfeeding, such as breast pads and a leaflet with top tips on breastfeeding and how to access support.  Among other items, the Baby Box contains two baby books, a carrier sling, underarm thermometer, bath and room thermometer, play mat, around 15 items of clothes for age 0 – 6 months, a changing mat, a redeemable voucher for a reusable nappy and liners and many other useful items for mother and baby including the RSNO app with classical music to soothe baby to sleep.

The new Baby Box design, created by a team of children and young people, has been unveiled. The new design features iconic landmarks such as Ben Nevis, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Edinburgh Castle. The winning team received an award from Children’s Minister Maree Todd at the APS distribution centre in Leith where the boxes are printed, filled and sent out to expectant parents.
