It is a century since the primary school in Newtongrange opened to children and teachers, and this week this anniversary will be celebrated in style.
A ceremony will be held on Friday to mark the occasion with music, memories and special guests from past and present. The school prides itself on encouraging children to “aspire, believe and achieve”. The school teaches itself to be “kind,respectful, fair, responsible, confident and hardworking”.
The week’s events
On Monday there will be a centenary parade round the village. A photographer will take whole school photo of all 365 pupils in Newtongrange Welfare Park.
On Wednesday teachers and pupils will sing the school song. They will also sing a new composition for the 100 year anniversary. And of course there will be cake with a silent disco to follow for all classes.
On Friday bagpipes will rouse school pupils along with choir singing and traditional Scottish dancing. The Newtongrange Silver Band will perform. Cllr Ellen Scott will unveil a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Newtongrange Development Trust have been interviewing some former pupils here.
The school will open its doors on Friday afternoon from 2pm until 3.30pm for any old boys and girls who want to visit. There is a lot to see with artwork at the front entrance. A timeline will be on display around the dinner hall which all pupils have had a hand in creating.
Material which pupils from decades past have created as well as photos and memorabilia donated to the school will be on display.
Head teacher – special centenary celebrations
Head Teacher Mrs Cameron said: “It has been wonderful to witness the enthusiasm and excitement build ahead of our special centenary celebrations, not just within the school, but within the wider community too.
“We have been working closely with the local reminiscence group, Newtongrange Village Voices, members of which have been sharing stories about the history and heritage of our school. Newtongrange Development Trust has been leading on our digital time capsule project, recording 100 interviews with pupils past and present. Eskbank Rotary Club has helped us to create a ‘100’ themed floral display in our school garden, due to bloom next spring.
“It is clear that Newtongrange Primary School means a great deal to a great many people, and we’re honoured to welcome everyone to share these special celebrations with us.”
