On Saturday audiences are invited to step into a world of song, folklore, and seasonal tradition.
The concert features original alt-folk music, traditional ballads, and live storytelling, creating
an immersive performance that reflects on the shift from harvest’s abundance to the hush of
winter’s first breath. Within the ancient stones of Greyfriars, the gloaming becomes a
threshold space, where song is spell, story is guide, and the timeless ways of our traditions
bring us home.
Artists include:
Fiona Soe Paing, whose acclaimed folk-theatre work Sand, Silt, Flint was praised by
Iggy Pop on BBC6 Music and reviewed by The Guardian, The Scotsman, and
Songlines Magazine.
Eileen Budd, storyteller and founder of the Travelling Folk Museum, brings Scottish
folklore and working-class history to life through story, objects, and art.
Maya McNeil, a Scottish-American songwriter and filmmaker whose folk artistry has
been described as ahead of its time, weaves music, healing, and creative resistance.
Audiences are invited to attend an afternoon workshop before the concert, Lanterns for the
Gloaming. Led by folklorist Scott Richardson-Read (Cailleach’s Herbarium), craftswoman
Anna Corbett, and musicians Maya McNeil and Fiona Soe Paing, the workshop combines
story, song, and lantern-making. Participants will create willow and paper lanterns, learn a
seasonal folk song, and join in a dusk procession to Greyfriars Kirk, carrying light and voice
into the evening performance.
This unique gathering offers the chance to re-root in the deep rhythms of the season, to
remember forgotten traditions, and to step into a space where endings cradle beginnings and
the otherworld feels only three steps away.
