Fife Flyers’ head coach, Jamie Russell, looked back on his weekend Challenge Cup double-header against Dundee Stars and declared: “I’m not disappointed.”

The new-look Kirkcaldy club beat Stars 5-1 at The Fife Ice Arena but they lost 5-4 after overtime in the same competition at Dundee.

Matt Berry was set up by Spencer Naas for the game-winner 4min 32sec into sudden death overtime and Stars outshot Fife 48-28 on Sunday.

Reflective Russell (pictured) said: “I thought it was a really good hockey game. We knew we were coming in and would face a desperate hockey team. I thought they played with a real sense of urgency.

“They certainly took momentum from us and I thought we really struggled on face-offs. We were on our heels a little bit in the second period and good resilience and good mental toughness we were able to get a couple of quick goals.

“We had a good third period I the overtime was back and forth and we dented the goal posts on one of our chances and it was a game that could have gone either way so I am not disappointed at all.

“I thought the guys, for the first time this year, put back to back games together with a real good solid effort. We competed hard and worked but in the next game we took out foot off the gas so good step in that direction that way.”
