People gathered in Edinburgh on Thursday at the Scottish Parliament to talk about climate change with politicians – including First Minister John Swinney – in a mass lobby.

The podcast A long time in finance is coming under the umbrella of the Library of Mistakes, and to celebrate, podcasters Jonathan Ford and Neil Collins are coming to Edinburgh for a very special live audience recording with author Ian Fraser. And what better to discuss in Scotland’s capital, especially after this year’s talk-of-the-town production Make it Happen, than the stratospheric rise and extremely undignified fall of RBS.

Council security staff to be employed direct
Security staff who provide front of house assistance at three of the city centre council buildings will in future be directly employed by the council.
The Green group of councillors say this has long been their hope and the security staff who are currently G4S and Vigilant Protect employees at Waverley Court, the City Chambers and 249 High Street will be employed direct by the council in future.
Cllr Claire Miller, who has been pushing for this change, welcomed the move: “Our security personnel provide a vital service to the city, making sure that Council premises are safe for staff and visitors. Yet for years the Council has been content to hire them via private companies with a terrible track record on workers’ rights – denying them basic employment rights like sick pay and pensions. Over the past years, Greens have been taking every opportunity to call for our hardworking security staff to be in-housed, and we’re so pleased to see progress on this as last.
“It has been one of the nicest parts of the role so far to be able to tell our familiar faces who greet us each morning and see us off each night that the Council is finally going to be treating them properly as they deserve.”
At Morningside Gallery
Morningside Gallery has announced details of a new exhibition of work from Scottish artist Jenny Martin RSW, an Edinburgh-based painter and printmaker.
Patterns of Life opens in Morningside Gallery on Saturday 20th September, and includes 27 new paintings from the artist. Jenny finds poetry in the patterns that surround us, weaving together discoveries from her travels, her Portobello garden studio, and her collection of ceramics by favourite artists.
Protest Quilts
On Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm at Coburg House Art Studios, 15 Coburg Street EH6 6ET, there will be an exhibition of quilts which Edinburgh Modern Quilt Guild have made to support a variety of protests – it is called An Exhibition of Outrage in Fabric.
