The 2025 Take One Action film festival runs until 21 September and today in Edinburgh the film Power Station will be shown at Filmhouse.
Two artists and activists are on a mission to power their street with solar energy, one home at a time.
As climate breakdown, the cost-of-living crisis, and fuel poverty worsen while the UK government wallows in inaction, what can we do? Take power into our own hands. “Every home a power station” is the infectious call at the heart of artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn’s project to power their street with solar energy one home at a time – inspired by mutual aid networks that flourished during lockdown. Power Station is a warm, humorous, and moving portrait of Powell and Edelstyn’s quest to build community power: which is not just about buying solar panels, but reaffirming a collective belief that a different world is possible. As they knock on neighbours’ doors, harness their creativity to raise funds, and persevere through financial and logistical setbacks, what they find is hard to resist: proof that all the power we need is right here, in the people around us.
Join Take One Action for a galvanising post-screening conversation with filmmaker Dan Edelstyn, who will also be running a Crossing the Line workshop the next day, as well as Ellen Grunewald from Porty Community Energy, equipping us with resources to plug into the local movement for just transition here in Edinburgh.
LIFE / EDIT – a pre-loved Pop-up for Maggie’s this Sunday
LIFE / EDIT, a company which “helps to create a clutter-free home for a calmer state of mind” recently had a client whose wife died from cancer on Hogmanay 2023 and left behind a treasure trove of beautiful clothes, shoes and bags. As well as donating some of them to charity, they wanted to organise a fundraising event to celebrate her and the support that Maggie’s offered her.

Library celebrating half a century
Moredun Library is 50 years old and there is an open invitation to go and enjoy tea and cakes on 22 September from 1pm to 8pm at 92 Moredun Park Road EH17 7HG.

Willowbrae Art Weekend will begin on 9 October @ 7pm
The launch event for the Willowbrae Art Weekend will take place in the Abercorn Sports Clubhouse.
Now in its third year, the Willowbrae Art Weekend itself will take place on 8 and 9 November, and will feature the work of four local artists: Anne Dallas and Karen Clulow from Four Abercorn Gallery, Emily Ingrey-Counter and Ian Gilzean.
The launch will include a small display of artwork from each of the artists. There will also be the chance to hear from the artists themselves, as they discuss their work and answer questions about their practice and what inspires them. This year’s Willowbrae Art Walk will also be launched at the event on 9 October. The Abercorn Sports Club is at Abercorn Cres, Edinburgh EH8 7HZ.
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is 30 years old
A national charity is calling on shoppers to join in as it marks 30 years of supporting people across Scotland via a crucial telephone adviceline.
This September, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) is throwing open its arms, and its famous phone lines, to celebrate three decades of their support which has led to Scots living life to the fullest with chest, heart, stroke, or long Covid conditions.
The charity, which has dialled in over 100,000 calls nationally since launching the Advice Line, is inviting everyone it has touched, service users, families, volunteers, donors, and staff, to join the festivities at St James Quarter in Edinburgh on Tuesday 30th September.
Proudly named ‘30 Years, Thousands of Voices’, expect moving stories, moments of joy and a few surprises, including two big comfortable chairs and an old-fashioned rotary telephone that lets visitors listen to real, heart-warming stories from people whose lives were transformed by CHSS’s support.
CHSS representatives will also be present at an event at St James Quarter Level 1 on 30 September from 10am to 6pm to engage with visitors and share information about the charity’s wide range of services. From the early days of community outreach to becoming a lifeline during the Covid lockdowns, CHSS has been just a phone call or text away for people during their most vulnerable moments.
“This is going to be a very special occasion,” said Jane-Claire Judson, Chief-Executive of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.
“For 30 years, CHSS has had the privilege of being at the end of the phone for people during some of the most difficult times in their lives, offering comfort, strength, and support when it’s needed most. We’d love anyone who has ever been part of our journey to join us. No life should be half lived. Everyone has the right to live life to the full – and sometimes all it takes is a call to change that.”
The Advice Line is free and completely confidential. It is available Monday – Friday, 9.30am to 4pm.
