Art Walk Porty
The ten year old art fest in Portobello runs until 14 September.
Flowering Porty Walk on 5 September at 2pm – Join local resident Cameron Wyllie for this walk around many of the gardens and growing spaces taking part in Flowering Porty. The walk will be mainly focussed on the gardens located around Joppa and the eastern side of Portobello, with the walk starting from Morton Street Triangle Community Garden.
Flowering Porty is a new front gardens festival in celebration of the Art Walk’s tenth year. Local people have been invited to create flourishing, colourful, pollinator-rich gardens for the period 30th August-14th September.
Friday night gig at the Traverse
On Friday at a Soundhouse concert at the Traverse, Paul Harrison’s Trio Mágico will be launching their new, and long-awaited, album Encontros. In addition to the band’s regular lineup – Paul Harrison on keys, Mario Caribé on bass and Stu Brown on drums – there are two distinguished guests: Laura Macdonald on saxophone and Rachel Lightbody on vocals.
Reminder about Emergency Alert on Sunday
The UK Government has announced that it will send a test Emergency Alert to mobile phones across the UK at around 3.00pm on 7 September 2025.
The system is used to warn the population of the UK in cases of extreme weather and allows vital information to be sent in the case of an emergency to as many people as possible.
Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “Emergency Alerts have the potential to save lives, allowing us to share essential information rapidly in emergency situations including extreme storms. Just like the fire alarm in your house, it’s important we test the system so that we know it will work if we need it.
“This test is part of our action plan to build resilience across the whole country and secure the nation under the Plan for Change – from the £1 billion we’re investing in a new network of National Biosecurity Centres to the £4.2 billion we’re investing to build a new generation of flood defences to protect local communities.”
