Drivers in an East Lothian village have been warned they are breaking the law after repeatedly ignoring barriers shutting its High Street.
East Lothian Council shut East Linton High Street this morning for three weeks of resurfacing work but they said already they are seeing ‘high levels of non compliance’.
The local authority has issued a warning to motorists that ignoring the barriers is illegal and puts workers at risk.
Appealing to drivers to follow the rules during the temporary closure, a spokesperson said anyone caught breaking the ban will be reported to the police.
They said: “Unfortunately, we are experiencing large numbers of vehicles
driving through the barriers. This is not only illegal but also puts our operatives at risk.
“Motorists must follow the signed diversion route which is in place. Anyone who fails to comply with the road closure order will be reported to the police.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the carriageway improvement programme and appreciate the public’s cooperation during these essential works.”
The closure is expected to last three weeks, weather permitting.
