Sarah Boyack MSP last night called the possible relocation of Jenners department store from Edinburgh’s Princes Street, a “loss” to the city and urged planning officials to exercise caution before construction work begins on the site. The department store is likely relocate in the next year to make way for a full building renovation by Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen, including reinstatement of its former historical elements.

However, planning permission has yet to be obtained for the renovation of the unique building, due to begin in 2021. Plans incorporate a hotel, cafes, rooftop bar and restaurant, and a raft of luxury shops as part of the new complex.

Whilst welcoming new business to the city, Ms Boyack, member for Lothians and shadow Local Government spokesperson, urged caution. She said : “The fiasco of this year’s Christmas Market, where large scale work was permitted to take place without any planning in place, cannot be allowed to happen again. In addition, this renovation will cause disruption for transport links, and will also have a significant effect on the city and its residents.

“I urge the council to ensure that all possible measures are taken to reduce the impact to residents and visitors, whilst ensuring that the correct planning permissions are in place before work begins. Our historic environment deserves proper care and respect, and it is the council’s responsibility to ensure that developers work within established frameworks and adhere to all legal requirements.”

The building sold for an estimated £50m in 2017. Ms Boyack added : “The relocation of Jenners will be a great loss. So many families will have fond memories of shopping there, especially during the Christmas period. The iconic brand has been a part of Princes Street for many years and it is a real shame to see it moved from its historic flagship location.”
