Guildford Flames have applied to join the Elite League and, if they are given the green light, then 12 teams, including Edinburgh Capitals, will contest the 2016/17 championship as Milton Keynes Lightning have already been accepted.

Flames’ application was put before the league meeting on Tuesday at East Midlands Airport and they have been invited to make a presentation to the next Elite League board meeting.

Neil Russell, speaking on the league website, said a decision would then be made.

He also revealed that goal-line technology was imminent. Braehead and Belfast are set to follow suit “sooner rather than later” but Russell said that there had been some issues with arena teams.
