Edinburgh Napier University have bestowed an honorary degree on the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Dr Joseph Morrow takes care of all things heraldic, so if you want a coat of arms  in Scotland he is the one you need to get in touch with.

 

He was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms in 2013, a role which also gives him responsibility for all state ceremony within the country.

dr-joseph-morrowHis longstanding interest in heraldry was prompted by his involvement with the Scottish Episcopal Church. As a younger man, he enjoyed studying the many Coats of Arms in church buildings he attended.

Dr Morrow, who was made a Queen’s Counsel in 2015, has also been President of Scotland’s first Mental Health Tribunal since 2005, and from 2010 to 2013 was President of the Additional Support Needs Tribunals for Scotland.

He was Her Majesty’s Commissioner for Mental Welfare in Scotland between 1998 and 2006.

Dr Morrow played a key role in helping to establish Edinburgh Napier’s Centre for Mental Health and Incapacity Law, Rights and Policy. He gave an address at its launch in November 2013, and is committed to its ongoing work.

Today he joined hundreds of the university’s students at a ceremony in the Usher Hall to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Laws.

Dr Morrow said: “I am greatly honoured by the award of Honorary Doctorate of Laws from such an innovative university. I am proud to have been associated with the Centre for Mental Health and Incapacity Law, which is recognised as a centre of excellence. The new campus at Craiglockhart is a setting which really reflects a university which is going places.”

Also honoured by Edinburgh Napier at this week’s graduation celebrations are:

  • Award-winning advertising copywriter Susie Henry, who receives an Honorary Fellowship on October 27.
  • Professor Hugh McKenna, Dean of Medical School Development at Ulster University, who receives an Honorary Doctorate of Nursing on October 27.

Professor Andrea Nolan, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University, said: “It is exciting to see people who have made such a significant impact on the worlds of law, industry and nursing joining our celebrations.

“Their drive and talent will inspire our students as they set out to make their own mark on the world.”
