A major police enquiry is ongoing after a body was found by a member of the public in a tunnel near a disused railway in Edinburgh earlier today,

Officers from British Transport Police were called to the site near the old Abbeyhill Station, off London Road and the body is believed to have been there for some time. The  area has been cordoned off and forensics officers are at the scene.

A spokesman for British Transport Police  said: “At this stage, enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this death and we are in discussions with the procurator fiscal.

“Officers are working to identify the person and inform any next of kin.”
