Cruden Homes’ Phil Purves is a man with a mission. Apart from his busy day job as site manager at the company’s prestigious Kinnear Road development in Edinburgh’s Inverleith area, Phil is also chairman of his local kids’ football club, Tranent Colts FC in East Lothian, a position he has held for the last nine years having been involved with the club since 2001.

Under Phil’s stewardship, the club is set to be involved in an extremely exciting and rewarding experience in June 2016 with a delegation from Tranent Colts FC, in conjunction with East Lothian Council and the Scottish Football Association, planning to visit a number of schools and communities in Rwanda in East Africa.

Phil said: “Our ‘goal’ is to assist in many community projects while also deliver football sessions to people who will really benefit from this opportunity. We believe this can make a real difference to young Rwandans’ lives who can use football as a catalyst for change”.

Phil continued: “This is not just about football but also assisting in the regeneration of communities within Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, by also participating in community projects such as Street Kids Rescue, Building and Housing and Agriculture projects.

“Our team will help first hand with these projects to get kids off the street, build and repair housing and assist in the building of farming projects within the communities.

“East Lothian already has pre-existing links with Rwanda, which were further strengthened when they hosted representatives from the Rwandan Commonwealth Games team in 2014. The ongoing legacy is a continuing association which aims to provide better outcomes for people from both countries and our club is really looking forward to developing this exciting partnership”.

Local vet, Heather Bacon of Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education (part of the University of Edinburgh) in Edinburgh has been shortlisted for Vet of the Year in the prestigious Petplan Veterinary Awards for 2016. The awards, now in their 17th year, celebrate the nation’s most exceptional vets, vet nurses, practices, practice managers and vet support staff who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in keeping pets healthy and giving owners peace of mind.

Heather has worked with animals for seven years, travelling all over the world as part of her veterinary career. Along with lecturing at the university, she has played a role in influencing veterinary policy and regularly works with NGOs to deliver training and education of clinical skills. Her current role combines her love of improving veterinary practice abroad, with teaching the undergraduate vets of the future.

Commenting on her nomination, Heather says: “I’m totally stunned! I’m delighted to be considered, and hope that that my unusual role might inspire vets from across the UK to consider other areas of veterinary practice outside the norm.”
