Waverley Station has undergone a lot of changes in recent years with the new roof, the new access arrangements for cars and the new market area next to Platform 2. But Lothians MSP Sarah Boyack feels that more could and should be done.

Sarah Boyack said: “The key issue is that better access to the station needs to be delivered.  Network Rail told us that accessibility had been improved and for far too many people this is simply not their experience.

“We need to see better access for people with disabilities.  The lack of access for taxis now makes people with disabilities reliant on phoning for help to get into the station.  That system was criticised last week in our meeting between MSPs and Network Rail.

“We also need to see better access for cyclists and people with luggage or prams.  The pavement access via the ramps into the station is congested with little space for people walking in or out of the station.

“The escalators up to Princes Street regularly break down leaving people with luggage or poor mobility struggling to get up the Waverley Steps.

“I now look forward to the meeting promised by Network Rail as I have been raising these concerns for months now.”

The road safety charity Brake is organising an event at the City Chambers today at the start of Road Safety Week when pedestrians and cyclists will be given the opportunity to sit in an HGV to learn about blind spots.

The campaign will call on all road users to look out for each other to stop the deaths and serious injuries which happen on our road every day. Last year 172 people were killed on Scotland’s roads and 1667 people were seriously injured.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay holds its launch this morning, presumably with bacon rolls and coffee. Pete Irvine’s Unique Events are in charge of the New Year offering again this year and we wait to see what will be new and different.

We already know about Lily Allen, Young Fathers, fireworks and probably a torchlit procession. What else can there be to tempt us to stay here in Edinburgh this Hogmanay, or is it all for tourists? What do you think?
