Kidney Research UK will be fundraising at the Edinburgh Capitals ice hockey game against Sheffield Steelers on Saturday 15th March. Miss Edinburgh 13/14 winner Susanne Sinclair will be in attendance and doing a ceremonial puck drop to kick off the game as she is a keen supporter of Kidney Research UK.

Also in attendance among the volunteers will be local girl Karen Phair. Karen received a kidney from her dad but unfortunately after the birth of her son her kidney failed. She was very ill and had to be back on dialysis. Fortunately her stepdad was a match and he donated a kidney. Karen is now doing very well and is expecting another baby in May.

Donations to Kidney Research UK are so important as they can only fund 1 in 5 projects at the moment.

Some facts about the work that Kidney Research UK is doing:

· There is a shortage of kidney donors

· 6,000 people in the UK waiting for a kidney but only 3,000 transplants are carried out each year

· In Scotland there are 481 people waiting for a kidneys

· The amount of patients with kidney failure is increasing by about 4% each year

· Kidney disease can affect anyone at any age; three million people in the UK are at risk of developing it
