Kyle Bendall is 17 years old, and is currently finishing the last year of my Highers at Balerno High School.
But his mind is not entirely focussed on his studies!
Kyle writes:-“In September of 2014 I will be leaving for the biggest experience of my life so far. I am travelling to Ghana to volunteer teaching local children in schools in the Volta region for a whole year. I returned from a selection course on the Isle of Coll and I was hand-picked to go abroad this September, through the educational charity ‘Project Trust’.
“My voluntary year will consist of teaching children English, Maths and Science, which will hopefully give them vital skills for the future. I will be working with the children and the local community for a year and be immersed into a different way of living. I will also be teaching extra-curricular activities including sports such as athletics, football and rugby.
“Project Trust specialises in sending 17-19 year old school leavers overseas for 8 or 12 month volunteer placements in Africa, Asia or the Americas. Project Trust sends about 250 volunteers to 23 countries annually and is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional gap year organisations in Britain.
“I hope to raise awareness of what I am trying to do and hopefully inspire other kids my age to go to less fortunate countries and give something back. However, to get to to teach in Ghana I have to fund raise £5,400. I have done various events such as a Concert Gig at Cabaret Voltaire, car boot sales and I am in the planning stages of a Ceilidh and Race Night.”
