When Rachel Polonsky went to live in Moscow, she found an apartment block in Romanov Street, once a residence of the Soviet elite. One of those ghostly neighbours was Stalin’s henchman Vyacheslav Molotov. In Molotov’s former apartment, Rachel Polonsky discovered his library and an old magic lantern. Molotov – ruthless apparatchik, participant in the collectivizations and the Great Purge – was also an ardent bibliophile. Molotov’s library and his magic lantern became the prisms through which Rachel Polonsky renewed her vision of Russia.

Penny Black is a 4 piece rock band from Edinburgh creating a fusion between early 2000’s indie and lo-fi rock. They strive to keep things simple. Melody is important to the band as well as rich harmonies which come across in the bands EP ‘Penny Black.’ They are just one of the bands appearing tonight at The Queen’s Hall at 7.30pm in a show delayed from December 2010 to showcase new young talent.

In the 1860s, Chambers Publishers commissioned a series of wood engravings to illustrate Chambers’ Encyclopaedia and The Book of Days. Alison Taubman, Principal Curator of Communications, explores the fascinating collection.
FRIDAY 25 MARCH 7-9pm at AXO
Ash Coates is currently the international artist and resident at AXO Gallery. On March 25th his 2 months residency comes to an end and all the hard work goes up for show and/or sale. It will consist of a bunch of new paintings and installation work that deals with the notion of paradise whilst making references to quantum physics, graffiti art, cave painting and sci fi pop imagery.
This exhibition will only be up for the weekend, from the 25th to the 27th so make sure you are quick. It will open Friday 25th at 7pm and go through til 9pm with free drinks and finger food. This is a great oppurtunity for any would be collector to pick up a great investment from one of Australias up and coming new talents. 50% of any of the proceeds made by the artists will go towards relief funds for victims of the Japanese tsunami.
