The council has opened another registration window for collection of brown bins.

In last year’s budget a charge of £25 per annum was levied on those who have brown bins.

Everyone had to register for the service, and if you have not already done so then this is your chance.

If you do then you get a fortnightly collection of all garden waste.

The next registration window opens on 4 February 2019 and will remain open until 12 noon on 19 February 2019. Permits and collection calendars will be sent out six to eight weeks later and remain valid until 6 October 2019 which is the end of the current garden waste collection year.

If you need to have garden waste collected after 6 October 2019 then you have to also renew your permit during the summer.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “It’s quick and easy to register online for garden waste collections and you can also do it by calling us or popping into one of three locality offices. If you haven’t already signed up for this year’s service, this is the last opportunity to do so before we begin the permit renewal and/or registration process for the October 2019 – October 2020 collection year. Communications will be sent out directly to all current garden waste customers alongside wider publicity about how to renew your permit or apply for a new one.

“We already have 70,747 brown bins registered across the city, which means we can continue to provide collections to more than 65,000 homes while saving over £1.4m towards essential services for the people of Edinburgh.

“Sign up for your permit now and be ready for when spring – finally! – arrives.”

Residents who receive Council Tax Reduction (formerly called Council Tax Benefit) do not need to pay for the service but they do need to register to receive it.

Anyone who hasn’t registered for the new garden waste service is encouraged to compost their waste or take it to one of the Council’s three Household Waste Recycling Centres.
