At the King’s Theatre: Abigail’s Party★★★★

It’s 1977 and Abigail is having a party. She’s 15, into punk music, safety pins and boys. But despite the title of Mike Leigh’s iconic play, we’re not invited to Abigail’s party – in fact the nearest we get to it is the music coming through the wall. For we are next door, at neighbour Beverley’s drinks party. We are with the grown-ups. Or are we?

Beverley (Jodie Prenger) and Laurence (Daniel Casey) feel they have dragged themselves up in the world. They live in one of the larger houses in their suburban Essex street; Beverley – who used to work on a cosmetics counter – is now able to be a lady of leisure, while Laurence sells houses to other aspirational people.

The action takes place entirely in Beverley and Laurence’s living room, a masterpiece of 1970s furnishings; hats off to designer Janet Bird and Props Supervisor Lizzie Frankl, who have not only assembled a treasure trove of period pieces, but have also managed to pitch the style perfectly. I remember the smarter of my parents’ friends having furniture from Habitat, a string of plastic lemons in the kitchen, and a lot of Biba-esque purple. Beverley is not that smart; she has a room divider that doubles as a bar (‘Do you like Pomagne?’), a leatherette pouffe and some rubber plants. She serves cheese and pineapple on sticks. She has a phone, but it’s only a ‘party line’. But what Beverley may lack in style, she more than makes up for in personality; she is full-on, determined to bend everyone to her way of doing things, and utterly convinced that everything about her home is perfect.

Beverley’s guests are a younger couple, Tony (Calum Callaghan) and Angela (Vicky Binns), and Sue (Rose Keegan), mother of the rebellious, unseen Abigail. Tony and Ange have just arrived in the street; their house is one of the smaller ones and they have almost no furniture. Ange wants what the others already have (‘Is that a rotisserie Beverley?’ ‘Have you got fitted carpets Sue?’) The picture on the ‘For Sale’ sign of another local estate agent represents the peak of her aspirations; ‘ The house, the family, the car, the tree – I hoped we’d get a house like that.’

Sue, meanwhile, is a long-time resident and, unlike the others, she is distinctly middle-class with a girls’ private school voice to match. When Laurence asks her if she has seen changes in the neighbourhood, she replies that it has become ‘more cosmopolitan’, and that this is a good thing. Laurence, who is part of the working class insurgency, predictably doesn’t think ‘cosmopolitan’ is good at all.

Alison Steadman was the first actor to play Beverley, a character she created with Mike Leigh in one of his famous improvisational workshops. Although it is hard not to hear Steadman’s voice speaking the many immortal lines, Jodie Prenger makes the role her own, shimmying about the stage in her multicoloured kaftan, forcing drinks and cigarettes on everyone, flirting with the unresponsive Tony and bickering increasingly viciously with her benighted husband. Prenger’s dancing is hilariously funny; if her Beverley were 10 years younger she could have walked straight out of Pan’s People. My only criticism is that, despite growing up in the London suburbs myself, I have never heard anyone speak with quite such an extreme Essex accent.  Beverley is supposed to be a caricature, and as the evening moves along she becomes ever more grotesque, but she would be slightly more convincing if her vowels were just a little less elastic.

Laurence is every bit as aspirational as Beverley in his way, but what he aspires to is Culture. He has Lowry and Van Gogh prints on his walls, an embossed set of Dickens and a James Galway album on his shelves.  While Beverley wants Tony’s body, Laurence is more interested in Sue’s mind – he sees her, someone who has had piano lessons and been to Paris, as his way into the middle classes. It is tempting to see Laurence as a better person than Beverley, but in the end they are both caught up in the struggle to climb an unassailable ladder. They will never enter Sue’s world – as he tells her;

‘Most people drift through life without any particular aims. Life is a fight, people always seem to be in your way.’

Sue is the odd one out in this soiree; not only is she middle class, she’s also single, a mother, and apparently without aspirations. She doesn’t hate her ex, she’s quite happy with her surroundings,  and her only angst seems, understandably to come from worrying about what Abigail is up to. Rose Keegan has nailed the well-bred woman’s accent and behaviour so well that, when Sue suddenly admits that she doesn’t like her husband’s new wife, we feel quite shocked at the indecency of this disclosure. Everything about Sue, from her speech (‘Hello Abigail, it’s Mummy’) to her pinafore dress and her eating something called dinner much later than the others have their tea, screams respectability. She is comfortable in her life despite  (or maybe because of) her lack of partner. She hasn’t had to fight her way up, she was born there; she can afford to be polite.

Vicky Binns’ Angela is by far the most likeable character of the five, at least in this production. She calls a spade a spade, is neither embarrassed by her relatively low social standing nor afraid to admit that she wants more. Optimistic, enthusiastic and equally oblivious to Sue’s poshness and Beverley’s condescension, she ploughs on, telling everyone about Tony’s curry-induced gastroenteritis (‘Have you ever tried pilchard curry? It’s a very economical dish.’), blundering into the history of Sue’s divorce, and banging on and on about the price of their house – something which, of course, Sue would never mention.

Gradually, however, we find out that Angela’s married life is far from easy. Calum Callaghan’s terse, ill-tempered Tony bristles with frustrated hopes and disappointments. A failed footballer, he is now a fairly menial ‘computer operator’ – something that Ange points out at every turn, though without the slightest hint of malice. Tony is a man at the end of his tether, and he takes his fury out on his gauche, well-meaning wife, constantly snapping, and soon shouting, at her. He won’t let her learn to drive (‘He says I’d be terrible at it.’), he doesn’t want to hear about her job, and he has, we discover, threatened to Sellotape her mouth if she doesn’t stop talking. He is a pathetic little bully, and this makes Ange’s admission that ‘I never thought anyone would want to marry me’ even sadder.

Will Ange have a happy life now that she has arrived in Essex suburbia? It’s hard to imagine that she could be contented with Tony, yet she seems to accept her lot, and he is the kind of man who will stay with her, knowing that no-one else is likely to have him, turning, over the years, into the grumpiest of grumpy old men, blaming his wife for his own shortcomings, unable to take responsibility for his own life. I wanted more for Ange, but perhaps she doesn’t want more for herself. As Beverley says, ‘I blame…women’s lib and all that permissiveness.’

There are many laugh out loud moments in Sarah Esdaile’s excellent production, but there is plenty of pathos too. Mike Leigh never writes straightforward comedy; he digs out the truth behind our behaviour and reflects it back to us in these strangely empathetic characters.

While Beverley, Laurence, Tony and Angela are desperately trying to fit in, on the other side of the wall Abigail and her friends are pogoing to the Sex Pistols and enjoying their Teenage Kicks, desperate to get out.

Forty years later, is Abigail still proclaiming Anarchy in the UK, or is she a housewife in Hadleigh? Now there would be an interesting sequel – and its ability to make you want to know what happened next is one of the many strengths of this timeless masterpiece.

Twenty-nine arrested following crackdown on money laundering

Twenty-nine people have been arrested and charged following a Police Scotland crackdown on money mules.

Officers from the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit (OCCTU) carried out proactive activity and arrested and charged 29 people across Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Ayrshire, West Lothian and Glasgow in connection with money laundering offences.

All 29 individuals are subject to a report to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. People who keep money in their bank account for criminals are known as money mules.

Inquiries into vishing fraud incidents – a tactic where people are tricked into revealing financial or personal information over the phone – have revealed organised crime groups are targeting school children to become money mules.

Police Scotland sent a letter to Education Scotland for it to be provided to the parents or guardians of every secondary school pupil, highlighting the dangers. Young people are being recruited via a number of different social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.

Detective Inspector Graeme Everest, of OCCTU, said, “We are regularly receiving information on individuals who are allowing their accounts to be used for this type of criminal activity.

“People are enticed in with the belief it’s quick, easy money and assured nothing will happen to them. If you do enter into this agreement, you are breaking the law. It is a criminal offence and the effect on your life can be huge.

“The fraudsters involved in orchestrating mule accounts are often from serious organised crime groups and any involvement with them can be dangerous.

“There are victims affected by fraud across Scotland and this can have a devastating effect on people financially and emotionally. It isn’t a victimless crime and by laundering money gained from these victims, you are playing a part in this.”

Andrew Laing, Deputy Procurator Fiscal for Specialist Casework, said, “Money laundering is an insidious crime which helps criminals prosper from their illegal conduct.

“Those who help criminals for example by allowing their bank accounts to be used to move dirty money through the financial system can expect to be caught by the police, reported to Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service and be prosecuted in court.

“Parliament has viewed money laundering as a serious offence and offences of money laundering can attract long custodial sentences.

“COPFS has been working closely with the police, other law enforcement agencies and the banks and we will take robust action against any person involved in money laundering where there is sufficient evidence to do so.”

DI Everest added, “We want to raise awareness of this and would urge anyone who has been approached to be involved in a scheme like this, please contact us on 101 or speak to a local officer.”

Hockey – Grove blitzed by Amsterdam in Europe

EuroHockey League: AH&BC Amsterdam (Holland) 12, Grove Menzieshill (Dundee) 1.

Edinburgh-based coach Neil Allan must lift his men after Grove Menzieshill were crushed 12-1 in the EuroHockey League by Dutch masters AH&BC Amsterdam in Holland.

The Dutch used their array of world stars and South African-born Justin Reid-Ross started the goal blitz in the opening minutes, sweeping the ball home after Mirco Pruijser’s initial shot.

He added a corner in the first minute of the second quarter before Boris Burkhardt touched home.

Pruijser slotted in the fourth and Reid-Ross concluded his hat trick for 5-0 at the break.

The Scots pulled a goal back only 30 seconds after the restart when former Grange star Luke Cranney intercepted on the left of the pitch and crossed for Jamie Golden to finish.

Further goals from Pruijser, Valentin Verga, Tom Hiebendaal and Burkhardt stretched the lead out to 9-1 before the end of the third quarter.

Burkhardt became the second player to complete his hat-trick in the 49th minute and Pruijser became the third to score a treble with four minutes remaining before Rik van Kan took the tally to a dozen.

Speedway – two Monarchs key men told to get into gear

Staggs Bar Monarchs team boss Alex Harkess wants captain Ricky Wells and comeback man Justin Sedgmen to up their game.

And Harkess, on the eve of the club’s Championship Shield double-header with Newcastle Diamonds, said: “Ricky Wells was a bit better last Sunday (at Scunthorpe Scorpions) but still not where he should be, and nor was Justin Sedgmen.

“This weekend’s matches are crucial for Sedgmen because there are opponents there that he has to beat.” Only the section winners are sure to progress so a good first-leg is essential with the return on Tyneside on Sunday (6.30pm).”

Newcastle three former Edinburgh riders in their line-up, Steve Worrall, Matthew Wethers and Max Clegg.

And, having started racing each other in 1948, the teams stand at 89 victories each in the series with seven draws. The race points are almost as close, Monarchs in front by 8,241 to 8,207.

Newcastle claimed an excellent victory over fancied Sheffield last weekend.

Harkess added: “Newcastle have a couple of Armadale specialists in their side, but they are a team that we do have to beat.

“We are expecting the improvement that started on Sunday to continue.”

Danny McAskill brings Drop and Roll to the Fringe

Interviewing Danny MacAskill is a very easy affair. He really is as laid back as he makes all the stunts look on his videos, and he has lots to say.

It may only have been last night that he flew in from California, but there was just a tiny hint of jet lag – and none at all when he offered to perform a couple of stunts for me! He is still part of the Red Bull family as he has been for the last ten years.

PHOTO Dave Mackison

He said Red Bull have given him lots of support over the last decade since his first video showing off his cycling skills was published on YouTube. He used places like Edinburgh Castle as a playground for some of the spectacular stunts. Since then it has had over 38 million views.

To celebrate the key milestone Danny and his colleague Duncan Shaw will return to Edinburgh this summer with a family friendly show with an element of audience participation.

He is bringing his Drop and Roll Tour to the capital this year in a debut Edinburgh Festival Fringe show. Edinburgh still feels like home although he did admit that Bristo Square has changed a bit since he used it as a backdrop to his cycling videos.

Danny said : “That video certainly kicked off a career that I could not have imagined having. It’s amazing what the internet can do and the opportunities it can open up.”

Prior to that Danny had worked in a bike shop in Aviemore for a few years after leaving school and his home base of Skye. He explained why he moved to Edinburgh. He said :”Once I had ridden all the places in Aviemore I fancied moving to a city and Edinburgh was the first port of call. I saw it as not too big, more like a big town.

“It is a perfect backdrop for a video. My focus was very much about trying to find the coolest riding I could find. I had lived in the city for maybe about four years and I had these dream tricks that I thought about trying. It wasn’t until my flatmate offered to make a video that I started looking at these tricks seriously.”

All of that is now in the past and since hitting the road in 2014 the Drop and Roll Tour street trials display team have performed shows in Scotland, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, South Africa, Philippines, Indonesia and the USA.

Watch out for him cycling on the streets of Edinburgh in August as he thinks he will have enough energy left to have a bit of fun on a bike around the city.

Danny MacAskill’s Drop and Roll Live, with an exceptionally talented team of riders including Drop and Roll’s co-founder and fellow Scot, Duncan Shaw, will be performed at The Lafayette.

New portrait of James Adam unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) and the V&A have jointly acquired a portrait of James Adam of the 18th century architectural dynasty.

Pictured: James Adam, 1732 – 1794. Architect and designer, 1763 by Antonio Zucchi (1726-1795). Oil on canvas, 172.8 x 123.2cm. Purchased jointly by the National Galleries of Scotland and the Victoria and Albert Museum, with assistance from the Art Fund, 2019.

This portrait by Italian Antonio Zucchi (1726-95) is the third time that the two organisations have joined together to secure an outstanding artwork. The first two pieces of art were sculptures, the Three Graces and then The Campbell Sisters. This purchase has been made possible by a major grant from national charity Art Fund.

The Campbell Sisters

It will hang at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery among the 18th century collection before going to the V&A in London later this year. Then it will be shown at both locations on a seven year rotation.

Christopher Baker, Director of European and Scottish Art and Portraiture for the National Galleries of Scotland, commented: “James Adam’s portrait is a work of great swagger and refinement that demonstrates the confidence of the Scottish Adam family as seminal taste makers for eighteenth-century Europe. It represents a splendid addition to the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland and we are immensely grateful to both the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Art Fund for making its joint purchase possible.”

“We are very pleased to be helping both National Galleries Scotland and the V&A in acquiring this fine and important portrait of James Adam. It is fitting addition to both collections, marking the sitter’s legacy as a highly influential Scotsman with great significance to the history of British architecture and design, and we know it will enjoyed by a wide public in both locations.”

The painting depicts James Adam during his grand tour of Italy in 1763, before he returned to London to work with his brother, Robert Adam (1728-92). Dramatically posed and luxuriously dressed, he is surrounded by objects that refer to the study of the ancient world that inspired the neo-classical designs for which the Adam were renowned.

Robert and James Adam, along with their brothers John and William, were the sons of the mason-architect and entrepreneur William Adam (1689-1748). Together the family enjoyed the status of being Scotland’s foremost architects of the eighteenth century. Their role as designers of neo-classical buildings and interiors was to prove profoundly influential not only in Edinburgh and London but all across Europe, North America and Russia.

Robert and James established their architectural practice in 1758. They not only excelled at designing elegant Palladian buildings but also entire interior decorative schemes, including furniture, so ensuring a unity to their immensely popular neo-classical vision. Between 1773 and 1779 the brothers published The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam which played a key role in spreading knowledge of their work internationally.

James undertook a Grand Tour of Italy, to seek inspiration for his work, between 1760 and 1763. This impressive portrait was painted in the final year of his tour. It refers to his profession as an architect, and sees him hold dividers in one hand and paper in the other. However, he is also presented as a man of wealth and discrimination, dressed in a silk and fur trimmed gown, at ease with his knowledge of the remains of the classical world that surround him. This type of magnificent portraiture was commonly associated with travelling aristocrats, rather than architects.

The portrait has the distinction of being the only known work of such a subject by the painter Zucchi, who was born in Venice and later worked on a number of decorative paintings for major interior schemes designed by the Adam brothers, before marrying the painter Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) in 1781 and settling with her in Rome.

The sculptures depicted in the painting behind James include the Medici Vase and a variant of the Giustiniani Minerva – revered examples of ancient art which could be studied in Rome and, it was felt, could inspire contemporary design. Panels of so-called grotesque ornament frame the niche in which Minerva stands.

The most significant object depicted is the capital (the sculpted top of a column) in the foreground, on which James rests his left arm. It looks at first like a work from antiquity, but is in fact taken from a sculpture design by James Adam. While in Italy he made detailed plans for re-building the Houses of Parliament in London in a neo-classical style, a project that was never realised. As part of this scheme, he produced detailed drawings for a new British architectural order of columns, and combined on them the Scottish unicorn (clearly visible here) with an English lion. The drawings he made were used as the basis for creating a model made of wax that was coloured bronze – and it is this object, which sadly no longer survives, that is depicted by Zucchi. It acted as an extraordinary advertisement for Adam’s ingenuity as a designer and through the prominence of the unicorn, reminded his clientele of his Scottish heritage.

Until now James Adam has only been represented in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland through a modest and informal drawing by Allan Ramsay (1713-84), while Robert Adam is the subject of two paste medallions by James Tassie (1735-99). Zucchi’s unique painted portrait complements his work as an engraver and decorative painter held in the V&A’s collection.

Witness appeal following theft of ATM

Police are appealing for the public’s assistance following the theft of an ATM from the Virgin Money Bank on Castle Street which took place around 3.30am on Thursday this morning.

A group of men arrived at the premises in a grey Audi Q5 estate vehicle, with the registration plates SK68 NLN, which had been stolen from an address in the Craigleith area of the city on Tuesday 9 April.

The men forced entry via a window at the front of the building, before using the vehicle to pull the ATM out from inside the premises and have stolen its contents. They made off in the vehicle in the direction of George Street and possibly headed west out of the city centre.

Inquiries are ongoing and officers are working to establish the full extent of the stolen property.

Sergeant David Simpson from the Community Investigation Unit said: “We believe at least three, possibly four men arrived at the premises in the stolen Audi vehicle which was then used to commit the theft.

“We are eager to hear from anyone who saw this vehicle and these men immediately prior to the incident, or has seen the vehicle since the early hours of this morning, to get in touch.

“The vehicle was stolen on 9 April and we’re eager to hear from anyone who may have seen it in the city or surrounding areas since this time.

“Equally who witnessed the incident, or has any information that can help identify and trace those involved, is asked to contact officers as soon as possible.”

Launch of Scottish Liberal Democrats European candidates list

Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie today unveiled his party’s candidate list for the European elections on 23r May. He stressed that every vote for a Lib Dem MEP will help stop the division and damage imposed by Brexit.

Willie Rennie said the list includes a partner in an Aberdeen law firm who has spent 20 years supporting start-up businesses and entrepreneurs in the North East, the former Chief Campaign Spokesperson for Scotland Stronger In Europe, and an EU citizen who represents the hundreds of thousands of people who have made their home in Scotland but whose futures are put at risk by Brexit.

The Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate list is as follows:

  1. Sheila Ritchie
  2. Fred Mackintosh
  3. Catriona Bhatia
  4. Vita Zaporozcenko
  5. John Edward
  6. Clive Sneddon

“I am delighted to announce our list of candidates for the European elections. We have a strong group of people who are committed to protecting our place in Europe.

“This election gives voters an opportunity to demand an end to the constitutional chaos we’ve endured for years. People are fed up with Brexit and listening to all the arguments. It has divided our country and damaged our economy for long enough.

“A vote for Scottish Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit and will send a message to the SNP on their unwanted independence plans. Every MEP we gain in Scotland will help make the division and damage stop.”

Lead candidate Sheila Ritchie added:

“I am thrilled to be leading the fight to secure Lib Dem seats in Brussels and a chance to stop the chaos of Brexit dead in its tracks. This election provides us with a tremendous opportunity.

“Brexit is bad for the NHS, for our universities and for our farming communities. People across the country have been wracked with worry over Brexit uncertainty and this is a way to make it stop.

“Liberal Democrats want close ties with our neighbours, not new barriers and broken partnerships. We passionately believe in a Britain that’s open, tolerant and international in outlook and we want the public to have the final say on Brexit.”

Murder enquiry launched following murder of Bradley Welsh

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in the city centre.

Former Lord Provost Donald Wilson with Bradley Welsh in 2014

Around 8pm on Wednesday 17th April, multiple reports were received of a firearms discharge in Chester Street.

Officers and other emergency services responded to the area and man was found lying on a common staircase, having sustained a serious injury. Sadly the man, passed away at the scene.

Formal identification has still to take place, however, the victim is believed to be 48-year-old Bradley Welsh, who lived nearby.

This death is being treated as murder. Early investigations indicate that this has been an isolated attack and inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

Anyone with any information that could assist the investigation please come forward.

Detective Superintendent Allan Burton from the Major Investigation Team said: “At this time our deepest sympathies are with this man’s family and a significant inquiry is now underway to trace everyone who was involved in the murder.

“I would ask that anyone who was within Chester Street, or the West End of Edinburgh on Wednesday evening, and who saw anyone, or anything suspicious, to contact the police immediately.

“Part of this investigation will focus on obtaining CCTV from nearby homes and businesses and we would also urge any motorists who were in the area and may have relevant dash-cam footage to share this with us.

“Murders remain extremely rare in the Capital, and such incidents where a firearm are used are even more uncommon. However, we wish to reassure the public that considerable resources are being dedicated to this inquiry and we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness.”

Chief Inspector David Robertson, Local Area Commander for the City Centre added: “We recognise and understand the profound impact this incident will have had, both on those connected to the victim, and to the local community of the West End.

“There will naturally be a high officer presence in the area over the forthcoming days both to offer reassurance and gather any relevant information that may be of use to the inquiry.

“I want to stress that Edinburgh remains a safe place to live, work and visit and we are doing everything we can to bring those responsible for this needless death to justice.

“In the coming days, weeks and months we will be providing the family with all the support and assistance they may require.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland via 101 and quote incident 3782 of the 17th April. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Alex McLeish leaves Scotland role with immediate effect

Former Hibs’ manager Alex McLeish will leave his role as Scotland National Head Coach with immediate effect.

The decision was agreed collectively by the SFA Board at its scheduled meeting today and in consultation with Alex.

His assistant coaches, Peter Grant, James McFadden and Stevie Woods, will also leave their roles.

Since his arrival in February of last year, Scotland have topped their UEFA Nations League Group, securing a UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying play-off place.

However, the Board believes a change of management is necessary to reinvigorate the European Qualifying campaign after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan in the opening Group I match last month. Scotland, who defeated San Marino 2-0 in Matchday Two, resume the campaign in June against Cyprus and Belgium and the process of recruiting a new management team will begin immediately.

Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA Chief Executive: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to place on record my thanks to Alex and his backroom team for their efforts in leading the national team over the past 12 months, not least in topping our UEFA Nations League group and reaching the play-offs.

“The decision to part company was not an easy one, especially given Alex’s status as a Scotland Hall of Fame member, earning 77 international caps, having played in three World Cups and taken charge of the national team for two spells.

“It was only taken after full consideration by the Board and after an honest and respectful conversation between myself and Alex earlier in the week. Ultimately, the performances and results as a whole in the past year – and, in particular, the manner of the defeat in Kazakhstan – did not indicate the progress expected with a squad we believe to be capable of achieving more. “With that in mind, it was agreed that we would seek to recruit a new management team to take us forward for the remainder of European Qualifying campaign.

“At this point I would like to pay tribute to Alex for the good grace with which he has accepted the decision and for remaining unstinting in his support of the team for the remainder of the campaign. It befits his status as a Scotland legend and Hall of Fame inductee.

“We firmly believe we have the potential to recover from the opening group defeat and unlock the potential of this exciting squad of players for the remainder of the campaign, safe in the knowledge we also have the play-offs as an additional route to UEFA EURO 2020.

“With Hampden Park one of the Host City Venues for the 60th Anniversary of the European Championships, we are determined to ensure our supporters can watch the national team participate in UEFA EURO 2020. “Alex, Peter, James and Stevie leave with our best wishes for continued success in the future.”

McLeish said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to have managed my country for a second time and leave knowing that I gave my all in the pursuit of success. I am proud that together we finished top of our UEFA Nations League group and qualified for the UEFA EURO 2020 play-offs, which gives us a real opportunity to reach a major tournament for the first time in over 20 years.

“I am also pleased to have given many younger players a first taste of international football that will stand them – and the country – in good stead for the future.

“I would like to thank those players who showed a passion for wearing the dark blue, my assistants, Peter, James and Stevie, for their contribution over the past year. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the entire national team backroom staff and my friends and colleagues at the Scottish FA.

“Finally, I would like to thank the Scotland fans for their unwavering support of the team and look forward to taking my place among them in the future.”

Livingston announce new sponsorship deal with VPZ

Livingston Football Club has announced a sponsorship partnership with Edinburgh-based vaping specialist VPZ.

Recently ranked as Scotland’s fastest growing company, VPZ is now the official vaping partner of the Almondvale club.

The partnership with Livingston FC has been announced during national vaping awareness month, VApril. Vaping is emerging as a key weapon in the NHS’s stop smoking strategy.

Public Health England estimates that vaping is 95 per cent less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. Latest figures also show that approximately 2million people in the UK have already quit smoking by switching to vaping, with 500,000 more presently trying to switch.

Furthermore, Cancer Research UK estimates that there are currently 9.4million smokers in the UK who can still potentially switch to vaping.

Doug Mutter, director at VPZ, said: “We are very excited to be launching our partnership with Livingston Football Club during VApril. “Vaping represents a huge public health opportunity and our goal will be to engage with fans to help them make the switch and quit smoking for good.” VPZ was confirmed as Scotland’s fastest growing company in Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track Top 100 league table. The vaping specialist, which has over 100 stores throughout the UK, is now forging ahead with ambitious growth plans to treble its store footprint to 300 in the UK by 2021, as it maintains its commitment of bringing consumers the widest range of quality approved products and access to specialist advisors through more available locations.

Doug added: “Consumer education is crucial too and we will also be investing heavily in our people strategy to ensure our teams are equipped to help smokers understand the evidence based public health opportunity of vaping products so that their positive impact can be maximised.”

Livingston FC vice chairman Neil Hogarth said: “Livingston Football Club is delighted to collaborate with Edinburgh-based VPZ, and wholeheartedly support its campaign to reduce cigarette smoking during VApril.

“Partnerships with local businesses are important to our club, and, if by working together, VPZ and Livingston FC can help NHS Scotland reach its target of reducing cigarette smoking, it will have been an extremely successful collaboration.

Edinburgh charity worker Bradley Welsh shot dead

SONY DSC

A major police investigation is underway after an Edinburgh charity worker was shot and killed last night.

Bradley Welsh ran charity projects in the city to help young people stay fit and out of trouble through his Holyrood Boxing Gym and was also involved with charity Helping Hands which fights inequality in the city.

Armed police officers attended the scene in Chester Street around 8pm last night following reports of a disturbance.

Three ambulances and paramedics also attended but Mr Welsh sadly died at the scene.

The area was cordoned off to allow for a full forensic examination and detectives have appealed for information.

A Police Scotland statement said: “Police in Edinburgh received a report of a disturbance in Chester Street at around 8pm on Wednesday “On arrival of emergency services a man was found seriously injured and sadly passed away at the scene.

“His death is being treated as suspicious and inquiries are continuing. “Officers will continue to provide a high-visibility presence in the area to engage with the public, offer reassurance and gather information that can assist with this investigation.

“Anyone who believes they have any relevant information should contact police immediately.”

Mr Welsh was a well-known figure in the capital. A lifelong Hibs’ supporter he became a football casual in the late 1980s with the infamous CCS.

In 1993 he won the British ABA lightweight title before turning professional and training in the USA.

In 2008 he also featured on ‘Danny Dyer’s ‘Deadliest Men’ a television show where Dyer interviewed some of the most dangerous and feared men in the UK but in more recent times, he devoted his time to charity work.

In 2017 he featured alongside Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle in T2 Trainspotting, playing gangland figure and sauna owner Mr Doyle who terrorised Renton and Sickboy in the film.

He was a close friend although not related to author Irvine Welsh, who wrote Trainspotting and last night the novelist tweeted: Bradley John Welsh, my heart is broken.

‘Goodbye my amazing and beautiful friend. Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way.’

Hundreds of friends and associates have taken to social media to pay tributes and threads have opened on both Hibs.net and Jambo Kickback.

Cask 88 launch second whisky in Scottish Folklore Series

The second whisky in Edinburgh-based, Cask 88’s award-winning Scottish Folklore Series of single cask bottlings is a 22-year-old distilled at the Arran distillery which is now on sale to the general public.

Only 183 bottles will be available and the whisky has a recommended retail price of £200.

The distinctive branding features the capricious selkie, long-feared by fishermen and island dwellers.

Selkies shed their skin to change from seal to human form and will seek human lovers to drag to the ocean’s depths, according to legend.

The luxurious nose has delectable notes of sweet demerara sugar, Coca Cola and classic sherry cask dried fruit.

These give way to warming Autumnal aromas ranging from sweet roasted chestnuts to dried tobacco leaves and hints of tree bark with some malted cereal notes still preserved.

The first in the series was a 45-year-old Ben Nevis 1972 Single Malt (70cl; 43.2% ABV; £650 RRP), Cù-Sìth.

It won gold medals at the 2018 International Wine and Spirits Competition in the Highland Single Malt 30-45 Year Old category.

It also won gold in the Design & Media Awards category and a gold medal at the 2018 Independent Bottlers Challenge.

The Highland single malt features a design inspired by the Cù-Sìth, a large hound, with a murderous bark, said to stalk the Highlands of Scotland.

The Cask 88 Scottish Folklore series will consist of six unique, single cask expressions, each featuring a mythical beast who has roamed the highlands, stalked the lowlands or inhibited the islands.

Director Patrick Costello told guests at the launch at Borthwick Castle, Midlothian, that he had never seen an Arran whisky so dark and he added: “It displays fantastic maturity and colour for a whisky of its age.”

The Scottish Folklore Series is available for worldwide and for more information visit: https://cask88.com

Application for IMPACT Scotland building recommended for approval

Next week’s planning meeting on 24 April will deal with the application to build a new concert hall in St Andrew Square, and planners are recommending approval.

The council has set out a timetable for consideration of this important application which will last most of the day.

Sir David Chipperfield of David Chipperfield Architects will give evidence along with Sir Ewan Brown of IMPACT Scotland and other representatives from community councils and heritage bodies.

A strict timetable has been set which will allow all evidence to be heard in the morning and the debate and decision will continue in the afternoon after a break for lunch.

Planners state that this building will make a valuable contribution to the city’s cultural infrastructure. They also say that it complies with the principles of the St James Quarter Development Brief.

Importantly, in light of the noise objections from the Edinburgh St James developer, the planners say that this development ‘raises no issues in respect of privacy, outlook, noise and odour.’

The building will comprise 11,347 square metres of floor space with five storeys above ground.

Both Edinburgh World Heritage and the New Town and Broughton Community Council support the plans which will be brought to fruition using some of the funding from the Edinburgh City Region Deal agreed between the UK and Scottish Governments and the City of Edinburgh Council.

Kezia wins defamation case

Kezia Dugdale MSP has won a legal action against a pro-independence blogger who accused her of defamation.

In a written judgment issued today, Sheriff Nigel Ross said Ms Dugdale’s article was protected under the principle of fair comment.

Commenting on the judgement following the court case, Kezia Dugdale MSP said:

“I am delighted to have won this case and hugely relieved after two long years of it hanging over me.

“I cannot thank the team at the Daily Record enough. They stood by me as I stood up to him and won. Their support has been fulsome and unwavering throughout such a difficult time.

“This is an important judgement for the right to free speech and a healthy press. This ruling clearly demonstrates that every citizen is entitled to make comments as long as they are fair and reflect honestly held views.”

Responding to Kezia Dugdale winning her case, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said:

“This is an important win for Kezia and for free speech. She stood up to bullying and won.

“All those engaged in the exchange of political views should reflect on this, take stock and consider how we speak to and about others with whom we disagree.”

Iconic Gullane Building offers buyers an extra guarantee

Homebuilder CALA Homes (East) is offering buyers peace of mind following the refurbishment of a former famous hotel in Gullane.

Buyers looking to purchase an apartment at Henderson House will be
protected for the next 10 years with the highest level of warranty cover from
the National House Building Council (NHBC) – a level of cover that is rarely
awarded to refurbished homes.

As well as covering the renovated apartments within the former Marine Hotel, the
new-build homes on the wider Marine Rise site also come with a 10-year warranty.

Campbell Te Rito, Site Manager at Marine Rise, said: “The team at Henderson House have worked extremely hard since we began on site.

“We have an NHBC inspector visit every 15 days and at all key build stages to make sure that we comply with standards and have addressed their guidelines throughout the process.

“When we first started refurbishing Henderson House, we were faced with a number of challenges which is common when working with an existing building. It wasn’t until we stripped back the walls that we knew exactly what we were working with.

“One of the biggest changes we have made to the structure is getting rid of the more recent extensions made by the fire college and so restoring the building back to how it looked 100 years ago.

“This type of work does take time, but the end result is spacious, new-build apartments set within one of the most iconic buildings in East Lothian.”

First built in 1899, the building was originally a seaside hotel for visitors to
Gullane, before acting as the headquarters for the Polish army during the Second World War. More recently, it was the main training centre for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Henderson House was officially launched last September by George Hope of Luffness, the great-grandson of Henry Hope of Luffness who first commissioned the creation of
the building as The Marine Hotel.

Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director at CALA Homes (East), said: “It is quite an unusual thing for a refurbished building to be built to NHBC’s 10-year warranty specifications – especially one as historic and distinct as Henderson House.

“This does say a lot about the level of care taken by our team on the ground, making sure the design, craftsmanship and materials are of the highest level.

“At CALA, we aim to make moving into a new home as stress-free as possible, and buyers can be safe in the knowledge that their new home is fully covered for the next decade.”

Situated in the seaside town of Gullane, Henderson House comprises 21 bespoke
refurbished apartments, ranging from one-bedroom apartments to three-bedroom
duplex properties, all individually designed.

Known for its award-winning beaches and world-famous Championship golf courses along the ‘Golf Coast Road’, the area is the ideal location for those seeking a slower pace of life while being in commuting distance of the hustle and bustle of the capital.

Prices for Henderson House apartments at Marine Rise currently range from £295,000 – £595,000, and all apartments are available to view daily.

Roll up roll up for the MoonWalk!

The fun of the circus came to Edinburgh this morning as walkers taking part in this year’s MoonWalk Scotland joined performers from Gandeys Circus to encourage others to join this year’s walking challenge.

Walkers and artistes from the circus

Wearing Walk the Walk’s famous ‘bra t-shirts’, everyone got into the circus spirit with Chico the Clown, a Fire Breather, a Contortionist and Rolling Globe Performers from Gandeys to raise awareness of The MoonWalk. This year’s circus-themed MoonWalk Scotland is on Saturday 8 June.

Organised by grant-making breast cancer charity, Walk the Walk, The MoonWalk Scotland will see thousands of women, men and young people walking a quarter, half, full or double Marathon through the streets of Edinburgh at Midnight to raise money and awareness to help fight the disease.

Amy Young (12) from Edinburgh is taking on the 6.55 mile New Moon at The MoonWalk Scotland 2019, with her Mum, Dad, sister and a family friend. Amy said: “It was really fun to do the photoshoot at the Big Top, especially meeting all the performers. I hope it helps to make lots of people interested in doing The MoonWalk, because it is such a good thing to do. I can’t wait to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer.”

Jacqueline and Gina Morales with their specially designed bras along with clown Chico Rico, walkers Ryan Brown and Amy Young

Jacqueline Morales, Aerialist Performer at Gandeys Circus said: “It’s been fantastic to support Walk the Walk and give people a taster of what to expect from the Gandeys show! We really hope the fun and excitement from today encourages more people to sign-up for this year’s circus-themed MoonWalk, especially ahead of World Circus Day.

“I was delighted to be asked to decorate some bras for Walk the Walk, which is an amazing and important charity that does so much to help people living with cancer in Scotland. My sister Gina and I proudly wore our circus-themed bras which are inspired not just by the big top itself, but the influential people who perform within it. Of course, the bras have been finished off with some beautiful rhinestones which is an iconic feature in traditional circus costume.”

Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk, Nina Barough CBE said: A huge thank you to Gandeys Circus for such a fun-filled experience today and getting everybody in the mood to MoonWalk in June.  I hope it inspires more women, men and children to sign up and put one foot in front of the other and join our MoonWalk circus. With challenges from just 6.55 to 26.2 miles, there really is something for every age and ability. Come on folks, roll up! roll up! and help us raise money and awareness to support people living with cancer in Scotland.”

More than 86,000 Walkers have taken part in The MoonWalk Scotland since the event started in 1996, and so far, more than £21.3 million has been raised to improve the lives of those living with cancer in the country.

Setting off from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Walkers can take on one of four challenges at The MoonWalk Scotland; The New Moon (6.55 miles, open to people aged 10 and over), Half Moon (13.1 miles), Full Moon (26.2 miles) or Over The Moon (52.4 miles).

The MoonWalk Scotland is on Saturday 8 June. Sign up now at walkthewalk.org

EVOC 150 find their poster girl

Using social media the Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations’ Council (EVOC) 150 team took exactly seven minutes to trace a young girl in a photo they are using in their anniversary storytelling. The photo had been taken during the 1970s to highlight a protest about damp conditions in housing in Pilton.

EVOC put the photo on Twitter and asked for help in tracing the young girl. They found out that it was Zoe Black.

Zoe said: “It took 7 minutes to find me, from when EVOC posted it on Twitter to when someone recognised that it was one of the Blacks. I got in touch and said who I was and that I was still campaigning. I had mixed emotions and thought ‘How have they got that photo?’. When I properly looked at it and remembered my jacket I got really upset and thinking back to when I was a kid.

“I kept thinking back to being brought up in Muirhouse, going to the beach, skiving school and all these things that we did. Once the emotion left, it was pretty cool!”

Zoe protesting about damp in housing in Pilton

Zoe comes from a family that have been heavily involved in protesting and campaigning since the 1970s, and she is still raising awareness for causes today.

She said: “I am still protesting because I believe it is important to fight against injustice and we are still fighting the same things. The rich are getting richer and the poor get poorer, it’s the same slogan people have been saying since the 1970s.”

Finding Zoe, and learning that she was still an active citizen involved in her community, added something extra special to EVOC’s 150th Anniversary programme.

Lucy Ridley, EVOC 150 Programme Manager, said: “When Zoe or ‘the Pilton Girl’ got in touch, I was speechless. Finding her, and showing her some of the archived photo collection we have of protests and demonstrations in the same time period has really deepened our personal knowledge of who was involved and why they were involved in civic action at that time. It’s been a real joy to meet Zoe and her sisters, and to see that she is still protesting.”

EVOC which supports the third sector build and enable resilient communities, is celebrating 150 years with a year long programme of events and activities.

Police thank public for cooperation during protest

Police have thanked the public for their cooperation during yesterday’s climate change protest.

At around 3pm, approximately 300 protesters gathered on North Bridge, causing the road to be closed for all vehicles.

Police engagement continued with the protestors to ensure the demonstration was contained to North Bridge, and pre-planned diversions were implemented to limit the disruption to traffic.

At around 8.30pm the demonstration came to an end. A total of 29 people, 17 men and 12 women, were arrested for a breach of the peace.

Reports will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and those arrested have been released to appear in court at a later date.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Anderson said: “I would like to extend my thanks to the public and our partners within the city centre for their assistance and cooperation whilst the demonstration was ongoing.

“The police have both a duty to prevent crime and disorder, and balance the qualified rights of protestors with the rights of the wider public under the European Convention on Human Rights.

“We will continue to work with event organisers and protest groups and would encourage those planning any event to engage with Police Scotland at their earliest planning stages.”

Long-awaited signage welcomes you to Balerno

TWO housebuilding companies currently building developments in Balerno have come together to provide the village with bespoke new gateway signage announcing it as the “Gateway to the Pentlands”.

For more than three years, the desire for new signs has represented a key element of thinking behind the community council’s draft community plan to increase pride in place, after a household survey by the village trust highlighted broad support for improving on the original “standard black and white” signage.

However, that new welcome into and out of Balerno could not be fully realised until CALA Homes (East) and Wheatley Group got together to arrange for the installation of the new green and yellow signs.

Richard Henderson, Chairman of Balerno Community Council, said: “These signs make for a greatly-improved welcome to our community.

“Gateway signage could seem on the surface to be a small detail – however the community council believe it will make a real difference and installing new signage was amongst the first recommendations in Balerno’s new community plan

“New housing development at Ravelrig and Newmills presents new challenges and opportunities for the community, and encouraging ‘pride in place’ is, we think, an essential element in ensuring continuity for the village at an important time as it changes and adapts.

“The community council are very grateful to both CALA Homes and Wheatley Group for enabling us to make this important new signage a reality.”

CALA Homes (East) is currently selling homes at two developments in Balerno, Ravelrig Heights and Kingfisher Park – and has had a lengthy history within Currie, Balerno and the surrounding areas.

Derek Lawson, Strategic Land Director with CALA Homes (East), said: “We know how important these touches are, so we’re pleased to be able to help with the purchase of the signage.

“We understand we are a visible part of this community and want to bring benefit to the wider area surrounding our developments.

“In being able to play a role in the creation of this much improved welcome to the village, we are simply supporting the great work and vision of Richard and the community council.”

Dunedin Canmore, part of Wheatley Group, has recently completed 21 new affordable homes for mid-market rent and are due to finish a further 18 shortly. The mid-market homes will be let and managed by Dunedin Canmore’s partners in Wheatley, Lowther Homes.

Mid-market homes typically have rents below the local market rates and are designed to be an affordable option for those who can’t afford to buy but have no priority for social housing.

David Fletcher, Wheatley’s Director of Development, said: “We’re delighted to have built these spacious and energy efficient new homes for mid-market rent.

“The homes will provide warm and comfortable places to live for years to come and we’re delighted that the first tenants are moved in and settled.”

The new restaurant has recently undergone refurbishment, maintaining its informal look and feel, with updated décor featuring a few of Mark’s personal accents.

Mark said: “We have been working really hard the past couple of months to get the concept of Grazing just right, and it was rewarding to see it so well received by our guests last night. Many new and familiar faces enjoyed tasters of our new and unique concept dishes and enjoyed ‘grazing’ and mingling at their own pace.”

With 160 covers, the restaurant offers private dining and ‘chef’s table’ experiences.

Mark continued: “Reservations have already opened to the public and we look forward to serving up our tasty dishes to diners in one of Edinburgh’s historic buildings, but within a relaxing environment that is accessible to all.”

Dale MacPhee, General Manager at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian, said: “Mark has injected lots of energy and enthusiasm over the past few weeks, there has been huge excitement across the hotel as staff have watched the new restaurant offering come together. My team were proud to unveil ‘Grazing by Mark Greenaway’ last night and hear so much positive feedback about the food already. I’m sure Grazing will make its mark in the West End very quickly among locals, corporates and visitors alike.”

The restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of the hotel and accessed via Rutland Street, will be open to the public on Friday 19 April 2019. To book, email grazing.reservations@waldorfastoria.com or call 0131 222 8857.
