Midlothian MSP protests about Borders TV coverage of independence referendum debate

Midlothian South Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP Christine Grahame is today condemning ITV Borders after learning that some people living in her constituency won’t be able to watch STV’s first televised debate on Scotland’s Independence Referendum tonight.

Ms Grahame believes it is an injustice that people in certain parts of her constituency will have access to the debate but others will have to view it later on STV Player.

She said:-“It is ridiculous that people in Penicuik will be able to watch the debate as it is broadcast but those living in Melrose may have to wait several hours before being able to hear it online. Even then some people may not be able to access it. And of course the irony is that this debate is between Nicola Sturgeon and Michael Moore MP, who of course happens to be a local member and even his constituents won’t be able to hear it.”

Ms Grahame has been campaigning for several years to see changes made in broadcasting in the Borders and on the issue of ITV Borders’ failure to cover Scottish News and current affairs from its English base at Gateshead.

She added: -“People in the Borders have an interest in seeing a referendum that fully meets modern democratic standards of which acceptable coverage throughout Scotland including the Borders by the broadcast media must be a part of. At present some of my constituents are being denied the opportunity to hear this debate on what is fundamentally very important to the future of our country.

“If the Borders doesn’t have the same extent and range of coverage then this only results in a democratic deficit in public service broadcasting.”

iomart lifts World Whisky Day spirits

An Edinburgh student who launched World Whisky Day last year to celebrate Scotland’s most famous export is raising his glass to Scottish cloud computing company iomart Group plc for providing the technology to ensure the event’s website stays online this year.

23 year old Blair Bowman, who lives in Trinity and is studying at Aberdeen University, launched World Whisky Day last year after realising there was no designated day to celebrate whisky. He set up a website and asked people to post their events and messages but it crashed after thousands of supporters across the globe tried to access it.

Blair said:- “Last year’s launch was absolutely fantastic – we got media coverage worldwide and even trended on Twitter – but the interest was so big that the server hosting our website couldn’t cope. It crashed and we ended up missing the chance to connect with so many more people than we could have done, which was a real shame.”

Blair turned to UK cloud company iomart, and a deal to host his website was the result.

Phil Worms, marketing director for iomart, added:- “Blair came to us and explained what happened last year so we’ve made absolutely sure it won’t happen again by putting the website onto a cloud platform that can cope with any amount of online traffic. We’re delighted to be able to help him out and make this year’s World Whisky Day an even greater success.”

This year’s second World Whisky Day takes place this Saturday 18 May 2013.  Events are being planned all over the world while in Edinburgh it is being supported by amongst others, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society which will be inviting the public to whisky tastings at The Vaults in Queen Street.

Blair continued: “It has really taken off thanks to a lot of support and encouragement from the Scottish Government, Visit Scotland and Event Scotland. In fact it’s been such a success that I’m now hoping to turn it into a full time job and a proper commercial business once I graduate in the summer.”

Blair is currently in talks with various whisky brands and marketing companies. However he’s also trying to fit in important exam revision. He sits the first of the final exams for his degree in Hispanic Studies at 9am on the Monday morning after World Whisky Day!

Protest at Cairn Energy AGM

Activists from Friends of the Earth Scotland are gathering today outside Cairn Energy’s AGM in Edinburgh, dressed as cowboys to highlight what they see as the company’s bizarre oil spill plan.

Cairn announced its intention to return to the Arctic in 2014 having taken a break to secure finance for its exploration activities. The Scottish company is known for its strategy of going after high-risk marginal oil.

Paul Daly, Corporate Accountability Campaigner at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:- “Cairn is utterly cavalier in its pursuit of Arctic oil, taking advantage of melting ice caps in its hunt for increasingly high risk fossil fuels.

“We urgently need to kick our addiction to fossil fuels to avoid disastrous climate change, not take advantage of its impacts to find and burn ever more oil.”

According to FOE, Cairn Energy intend to drill deeper than the depths drilled from the Deepwater Horizon platform in the Gulf of Mexico, and the activists claim that the consequences of an accident on a scale of Deepwater Horizon in the Arctic would be even more disastrous with harsh conditions hampering any clean up operations.  Total became the first big oil company to rule out Arctic oil drilling as just too risky in September last year.

Daly added:-“Cairn’s oil spill response plan is laughable, and was dismissed as woefully inadequate by a recent parliamentary inquiry. These ‘cowboys’ have some daft ideas about how they would clean up after a spill that demonstrated quite how little regard they have for the Arctic.

“Cairn should abandon their crazy Arctic plans.”

32 year old man to appear in Court after High Street Incident

Police have confirmed that a 32 year old man who was arrested and charged following an incident in Edinburgh’s High Street last night is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Thursday).

A woman, who is also believed to have been involved in the incident  is currently being treated in hospital after she took ill.

Officers were forced to cordon off part of the High Street at John Knox House after members of the public reported seeing a couple within a chemist shop there who were believed to be in possession of bladed weapons.

Specially trained officers used tasers to effect the arrest.

Pedal on Parliament 2 – Sunday 19 May 2013

This Sunday there will be a flash cycle starting from The Meadows and progressing to Holyrood. Last year the same cycle protest attracted more than 3000 people of all ages on bikes. This year the organisers clearly hope that it will be even bigger and better.

The Edinburgh Reporter met Kim Harding who is one of the organisers of Pedal on Parliament (and Director of Festival of Cycling…but that is another story!) to find out what those taking part should expect and also what the organisers’ hopes are for assistance from The Scottish Government. If you want to take part you can either bring a bike, or the organisers are also encouraging people to walk the  2 mile route. More details on the Pedal on Parliament website.

Five things you need to know today

Foster carers needed – Kiltwalk 2013 – Cairn Energy AGM – Jewellery event in Thistle Street – Leith Theatre Trust

The council have put out another call for foster carers:-

Over the year, the City of Edinburgh Council has recruited over 40 carers thanks to its successful Foster Me Foster Us campaigns. But this doesn’t mean we can stop there. With the number of children in foster care in Scotland at its highest since 1981, we need to recruit another 50 new carers by December 2013 to meet this urgent need.

Foster Care Fortnight will see us continue in our drive to recruit new carers. The faces of Caitlin and Scott will be reminding us that there are still lots more children who need loving homes. The campaign will use a variety of ways to attract new carers from across the city – buses, taxis, and huge bill boards.

This year Radio Forth will go on working with us as we sponsor Boogie in the Morning’s Breakfast show. DJ Grant Stott will be on hand to interview carers and their interviews will be on our Forth One webpage. One carer has been videoed and will appear on our Forth site during Foster Care Fortnight (13-26 May.)

All campaigns continue to centre on drop in events held at Waverley Court, the Council’s HQ. Foster care recruitment staff and carers are on hand to welcome prospective carers and answer their questions. Staff will also be present at this year’s Edinburgh MELA.

So if you or you know of someone who is interested in becoming a foster carer, get them to give us a call on 0800 174 833 or pop along to one of drop in events. Next one is Thursday 16 May at Waverley Court.  Details of these are on our website www.edinburgh.gov.uk/fostering

Remember we urgently need local people to care for Edinburgh’s children from birth to 18, whether it’s for a few days, months or the rest of their childhood. They need you too.

This Sunday is shaping up to be a busy day in the capital. Kiltwalk 2013 will be raising money for its six chosen charities when all walkers leave Murrayfield Stadium on a 26 mile walk at 9am.  The walkers will be following the route on the map shown here. There are also shorter walks which start a little later on. Also on Sunday Pedal on Parliament will be taking much the same route from The Meadows to Holyrood where they expect speeches at about 4:00pm.

Signs point the way for a new Leith Walk

Today we unveil the new street signs for Leith Walk being proposed by the Leith Business Association, the principal advocacy group for all Leith businesses.

The LBA wanted to take a proactive step towards improving what has been described as the third most important street in Edinburgh, and this new sign is the result. The proposed new signage has been created by the newly formed body, Marketing Leith.

The council has already committed to spending substantial sums of money to reinstate and improve the street, and is now seeking additional funding from Sustrans for plans to enhance Leith Walk even further. A recent consultation on plans for the street resulted in many ideas and design concepts being put forward by groups such as Greener Leith and the LBA.

The sign sets new standards, not only for design, but also for its use of the latest in LED lighting. All of the proposed signs will be permanently lit around the edges by the latest technology.

The association hope that the new signs reflect the positive approach of the branding of Leith as a destination in its own right within Edinburgh. Keith Hales, Vice Chair of the LBA said:-“We want to show that things can be done, and done quickly too. We are being proactive in producing these signs which will go a long way towards rebranding the street. The use of the World Heritage phrase is particularly important and has the full backing of Edinburgh World Heritage.”

The sample sign will be on display at Leith Walk Barbers, 280 Leith Walk. These signs along with others curently in the pipeline are components of the design proposals submitted earlier this year to The City of Edinburgh as part of their ‘Consultation’ on the future designs for the ‘Walk’.

Transport Convenor Councillor Lesley Hinds said:-” I congratulate Marketing Leith on the production of the attractive and distinctive signs for Leith.”

Maison Bleue goes back to the future with £5 lunch

Delighted diners are helping a renowned restaurant mark its anniversary – by enjoying lunchtime meals at prices last seen 15 years ago. Dean Gassabi, who owns the respected Maison Bleue restaurant in Edinburgh’s Old Town, has turned back the clock to 1998, when his eatery opened.

The talented chef is celebrating 15 years in business by offering lunch for a fiver.

Dean said:- “It’s certainly been a rollercoaster 15 years and few of the restaurants which opened around the same time as Maison Bleue are still around today. So we are delighted to be reaching this anniversary.

“We’ve gone from strength to strength in that time and we wanted to say a big thank-you to all those loyal customers who have helped Maison Bleue to become something of an Edinburgh institution.

“We racked our brains to think of a way to celebrate and make sure our customers got something out of. So our lunch for £5 deal is perfect. It lets us look back fondly at where we’ve come from while also looking forward – very much a case of back to the future.”

Dean’s daughter Layla, 32, now takes a key role running the restaurant her dad created.  To mark the launch of the £5 offer, which will run until August 1, the pair joined some  of the restaurant’s 30 strong staff to pose with a vintage DeLorean gull wing car like the one which transported Marty McFly through time in the hit series of Back to the Future movies.

As the ongoing credit crunch continues to bite, lucky diners may well be wishing they could turn the clock back on other prices to make life easier.

In 1998 a pint of beer cost an average of just £1.20 (now £3.80), a cinema ticket would set you back £3.30 ((£8.80), while a gallon of petrol cost just £2.77 (£6.31) and the average house prices was just £99,600 (£133,700).

At the time Tony Blair was less than a year into his time as Prime Minister, while details were only just emerging of US President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions with Monica Lewinsky. It was also the last time Scotland appeared in a World Cup, playing in the tournament opener against Brazil.

Work started on the highly controversial Millennium dome while a little company called Google was founded in California’s Silicon Valley.

Since opening in August 1998 in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, a World Heritage Site, the restaurant has proved a major success story with a menu which blends French, Scottish and North African Cuisine.

The consistent quality of the food has underpinned the restaurant’s success and the choice of dishes is inspired by Dean’s French and Algerian roots combined with the finest Scottish produce – with venison and Haggis Balls among the most popular dishes.

Renowned for its distinctive blue frontage on historic Victoria Street, Maison Bleue also boasts colourful hanging flower baskets every summer, which are a hit with tourists and locals alike.

Inside Maison Bleue has made important features of the A-Listed, three-storey building it occupies, with rugged stone walls and alcoved passageways giving it an intimate and homely feel.

A series of themed events are planned at the restaurant in the run up to the anniversary in August – menu and booking details plus event information can be found at http://www.maisonbleuerestaurant.com/.

First Edition of The Great Gatsby sold today in Edinburgh

Auctioneers at Lyon & Turnbull today sold a first edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby for £1875, on the eve of the premiere of the new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The book valued at £700 is from one of the most remarkable private libraries of English literature to come to auction.

The library, sold for a total of £226,000, belonged to the late Bruce Ritchie. Tom Stoppard on hearing of his death said “I’ve known very few people as kind, as learned, as civilised as Bruce.  He taught my son Oliver at Merchant Taylors’ forty years ago and many pupils remember him fondly.  The world is poorer without him.”

As well as the first edition of The Great Gatsby, the collection, of Stirling-born school teacher, Bruce Ritchie. included Henry Fielding, History of Tom Jones, 1749. 1st ed.  £1,700; Alexander Pope. The Rape of the Lock. 1714. 1st ed. £1,800, Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. 1843. 1st ed. £2,700; T.S. Eliot., Prufrock. 1917. 1st ed.  (one of 500 copies) £3,600, Kenneth Grahame The Wind in the Willows. 1908. 1st ed. £1,200; James Joyce Ulysses 1922. 1st ed. £4,400 and Dubliners 1916 1st ed. £3,800; Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited. 1st ed., 1945. (this included an insertion signed by Waugh), £1600, W.B. Yeats.  Mosada. Cuala Press, 1943, Lily Yeats’s copy, £1,200.

John Sibbald, book specialist at Lyon & Turnbull said:-“This was an outstanding result. What is even more astonishing is that, as a private collector, Bruce Ritchie could assemble this kind of collection, particularly relying chiefly on a school teacher’s salary. For me, the outstanding items in the sale included the collection of works by Alexander Pope, Seamus Heaney, Tom Stoppard and the works of Yeats. The run of publications from the Cuala Press, the press established by Yeats’s sisters also spring to mind.”

Ritchie’s father was a banker with the Chartered Bank and Bruce spent much of his childhood and school holidays in the Far East.  Bruce returned to Scotland in 1950 to attend Dollar Academy, going on to the University of St Andrews in 1961 to read English and German.

After a year at Cambridge training as a teacher, he was appointed to the English Department at Merchant Taylors’ School in London where he developed into an outstanding teacher of English. It was there that he met Tom Stoppard, a Merchant Taylors’ parent, and where too the novelist and biographer A.N. Wilson was briefly a colleague as well as becoming a lifelong friend.

This is the catalogue from today’s sale:-

Edinburgh Community Food wants to know if you are getting your 5-a-day

Contributed by Edinburgh Community Food

Getting your 5-A-Day?

This might not come as a surprise to you: fruit and vegetables are good for us and the more we eat the better! Fruit and veg are the only foods to feature in the nutritional guidelines of all major countries and scientists and health practitioners the world over agree that fruit and veg can help lower heart disease, some cancers and keep our bowels healthy. So, we all know that these foods are ‘a good thing’.

Here is something else that might not surprise you: we Scots do not eat nearly enough fruit and veg. Most of us these days are familiar with the phrase ‘5-a-day’. We hear it on telly or from our GPs and we read it in magazines and newspapers. But how many of us actually manage to reach this holy target of five portions a day? According to research average Scottish consumption is 3.2 a day but in the less well-off parts of our nation this sinks to around 2 portions, with plenty of people not managing to eat any at all. Scottish consumption is amongst the lowest in the UK, and the UK is amongst the lowest in Western Europe. No wonder we are the ‘sick man of Europe!’ But why are they so important?

Why should we eat fruit and vegetables?

• They are the best food source of vitamins and some minerals which are vital for your immune system and overall health

• They are a great source of fibre which keeps your gut healthy, may lower blood pressure and helps reduce constipation and bowel cancer

• They help keep your heart healthy, lowering the risk of attacks and strokes

• They help your skin and hair to look great, healthy and vibrant

• They are low in fat and are an essential component of a healthy, balanced diet

But where does this number ‘five’ come from?

Most of us are aware that NHS and government advice is to get at least five portions a day. This target of five is actually a rather arbitrary number. It was chosen because it was thought that ‘five’ was a realistic and easily attainable number for most people to reach. It is worth pointing out, however, that our target level is lower than for any other developed country. Have a below to see what other nations are doing:

Denmark 6 a day

France 10 a day

Australia 2 fruit + 5 veg a day*

Japan 2-4 fruit + 7-13 veg a day**

*Australia includes potatoes in their targets.

** Japan’s portions are slightly smaller than ours.

If you have a look at the Eatwell Plate you can see that our daily diet should include roughly one third carbohydrates and one third fruit and veg. A modest target of five portions doesn’t really seem to be enough so don’t feel like you have to stop there! The more, the merrier.

5-a-day, but at what cost?

We all know that fresh fruit and vegetables can be expensive. The supermarkets’ prices seem to go up daily and trying to ensure a whole family gets their 5-a-day can be tough, especially on a tight budget. However, there is some good news: it’s not just fresh produce that counts. All of the following items can also count towards your target (sadly potatoes don’t count – they are considered a carbohydrate food in the UK):

1. Dried fruit

2. Frozen fruit and frozen veg

3. Tinned fruit and tinned veg (beware of added sugar or salt)

4. Pulses, e.g. beans, lentils, chickpeas etc. (one portion only)

5. 150ml fruit juice (one portion only and not squash)

Other ways to lower your fruit and vegetables bill include:

1. Buy produce in season (see: http://eatseasonably.co.uk/what-to-eat-now/calendar/).

2. Focus on the cheaper items, such as carrots, onions, turnips and cabbage and use them to bulk out meals.

3. Use your local fruit and veg community co-op (http://www.edinburghcommunityfood.org.uk/what-we-do/co-ops/find-coop) or order a home delivery from Edinburgh Community Food (http://www.edinburghcommunityfood.org.uk/buy/order).

4. Go in with a friend, relative or neighbour for bulk-buy offers

Dried fruit can be very cost-effective. For instance, 500 grams of sultanas are about £1 in most supermarkets – that’s a lot of portions! Frozen vegetables in particular can be had very cheaply and are just as good as fresh! Although slightly dear, smoothies can also count towards your total. Just bear in mind that, as they are basically concentrated fruit, they do contain a lot of sugar.

But what is a ‘portion’?

OK, so we’ve looked at what types of food can contribute towards our 5-a-day but just what exactly is a portion? Roughly put, a portion is 80 grams or about 3 ounces. This is about the same as an adult’s handful. It also holds true for children though: they have smaller hands but also smaller bodies so for a child a handful is also a portion. Of course, nothing is ever quite as straightforward as we’d like it to be. Portions of frozen/chopped veg and pulses are counted in tablespoons, juice in millilitres (150ml) and for dried fruit you have to imagine how big it’s fresh equivalent would be! As an example three plums makes one portion. This means that three dried plums (prunes) also make one portion. And furthermore, each portion needs to be a different foodstuff. Unfortunately, it’s no good simply eating five carrots every day or drinking five glasses of juice. We need to get a balance of nutrients for our health and, as different fruits and vegetables have different nutrients, this means eating a balanced array of fruits and vegetables! Have a look at the table below to get a feeling for what a portion is:

Examples:

Fruit Juice 150ml (a very small glass)
Grapes Handful
Raisins 1 tablespoon (=1 handful fresh grapes)
Satsuma 2
Broccoli 3 florets
Apricot 3
Dried Apricot 3
Plum 3
Prune 3
Pear 1 medium
Tomato 2 medium
Pepper ½ medium
Carrot 1 medium
Cucumber 5cm/2”
Peas 3 tablespoons
Aubergine ½ medium
Onion 1 medium
Frozen veg 3 tablespoons
Leek 1 medium (white part)
Pulses 3 tablespoons

Sometimes even reaching 5-a-day can seem like a bit of a challenge and it can be tough changing a lifetime’s habits but it really is worth it. It takes just a few simple steps to change our routines and include more portions in our daily lives. Here are a few tips:

• Have a small (150ml) glass of fruit juice every morning with breakfast or add berries to muesli.
• Grab a banana for the journey to work.
• Choose fruit for mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks.
• Dried fruit makes a great snack for taking out and about.
• Go for beans on toast or soup for lunch.
• Include frozen vegetables with dinner.
• Have tinned fruit for pudding

Director & choreography: Matthew Bourne

Music: La Sylphide – Herman Severin Løvenskjold performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra

Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Highland Fling is a ‘romantic wee ballet’ choreographed by Olivier Award-winning Matthew Bourne.

Inspired by La Sylphide, and with a wickedly wry Scotch twist, Highland Fling follows the antics of James – a young Scot with sex and love and rock and roll on his mind.  Recently married to his beloved Effie, his addiction to excess finds him in the fateful company of a beguiling gothic fairy who leads him on a downward spiral into a weird and wonderful world far from the realities of life on the mean streets of Glasgow.

Highland Fling was originally produced by New Adventures.

Craigroyston Football Club will be playing in the East of Scotland FA Premier League next season after winning the first division league last night. Ross McNeil spoke to The Edinburgh Reporter after the game and you can listen to his interview below.

Paolozzi on sale at Bonhams

A rare sculpture titled Seagull and Fish by Eduardo Paolozzi, which featured in his first ever exhibition on Cork Street, will be auctioned as part of the Modern British & Irish sale on 29 May 2013 at Bonham’s auction room in New Bond Street. The work was a gift from the artist to the British illustrator, Enid Furlonger and is estimated to fetch between £50,000 and £70,000.

Paolozzi was a precocious student of sculpture and while still at the Slade School of Art, held his first ever exhibition in London at the age of 23 at the Mayor gallery on Cork Street, now London’s foremost gallery for Dada and Surrealism. Seagull and Fish was conceived when Paolozzi was just 22 years old and is one of four concrete sculptures completed by him in 1946. Allegedly, Freddy Mayor was unaware that Paolozzi was still a student when he offered him the show. Soon after the exhibition, Paolozzi left the Slade School without taking his diploma and brimming with anti-establishment sentiment.  As a sculptor he was largely self-taught.

Seagull and Fish is based on Paolozzi’s observations of the natural environment in Newhaven where he grew up. The Mayor Gallery exhibition established Paolozzi’s status as a professional artist, as he sold several drawings of Fishermen, fish and other seagull related subjects. The proceeds from the exhibition funded Paolozzi’s pivotal trip to Paris, which put him in contact with significant French artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brancusi, George Braques and Fernand Leger. This was a crucial point in Paolozzi’s artistic career, which contributed to the blossoming of his reputation.

The sculpture was created during a time when Paolozzi was experimenting with cement. He rejected the contemporary trend in figurative cement sculpture, which was towards a more polished aesthetic pioneered in the late 1920’s by Henry Moore. Paolozzi instead employed a rough and messy working approach which went on to influence a generation of other artists. His make-shift style was dictated by his impoverished circumstances, as he was forced to trawl through London with a cart, acquiring the necessary working materials from builders’ workshops. Paolozzi’s skill in converting rough materials into elegant sculptures is exemplified by Seagull and Fish, which transforms an ordinary subject and material into an enchanting form. Writing in 1947, the art critic Robert Melville compared Paolozzi’s work to that of Pablo Picasso, especially to the ‘large whorls of Picasso’s 1938 series’.

Paolozzi boasts both a fascinating artistic career and a tragic personal history which contributes to his extraordinary approach to art. In 1940, when Italy declared war on Britain, the artist was interned at Saughton Prison. During this time, his father, grandfather and uncle were among the 446 Italians drowned on a ship, the Arandora Star, carrying them to Canada. Traumatised by these events, the artist returned to Edinburgh to begin his artistic career. His reputation has continued to grow considerably since the 1950’s.  He was awarded a CBE in 1968 and in the 1980’s was commissioned to complete the mosaic pattern which decorates Tottenham Court Road Station.

Friends of the Earth demonstrate at RBS AGM

Friends of the Earth Scotland demonstrators protested and lobbied outside The Royal Bank of Scotland AGM, held at Gogarburn, the bank’s global headquarters earlier today.

According to FOE, RBS is funding the wholesale destruction of the Appalachian mountains in the USA and elsewhere by ‘blowing away’ mountain tops to mine coal deposits. Mountain top removal (MTR) wrecks the environment, impacts on health and contributes to climate change.

Pictured are Friends of the Earth activists, including (front) Paul Daly and Mary Church – posing as 2 ‘bankers’ stuffing their faces with coal to feed their fossil fuel addiction.

Police Investigating Disturbances at Edinburgh Derby

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses following disturbances at the Hearts v Hibs derby match over the weekend.

During the game, which took place at Tynecastle Stadium on Sunday 12th May, a number of flares were set off within the home and away ends of the ground and thrown towards the pitch. A 25-year-old man has already been charged in connection with one of these incidents. However, enquiries are on-going to identify others believed to be responsible and anyone who saw a flare being thrown is asked to contact police immediately.

Three other men aged 23, 21 and 18 have also been charged with alleged breaches of the peace following pitch invasions towards the end of the match. In addition, a seat within a stand was broken and a 14-year-old boy was subsequently charged with an alleged vandalism. A report will now be sent to the Children’s Reporter.

A robust police presence was in place before the game and a number of flares were seized from supporters prior to kick-off.

Local officers continue to work alongside colleagues from the Football Co-ordination Unit for Scotland to trace anyone involved in crime during the game and fans of both teams are urged to come forward if they have information that can assist with these enquiries.

The Match Commander, Temporary Superintendent Gavin Phillip said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the vast majority of supporters from both Hearts and Hibernian, who were a credit to their respective clubs throughout the day.

“Sadly though, a small minority have conducted themselves in an unacceptable manner and committed offences that could have put themselves and others in danger.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and officers from Police Scotland, assisted by officers from FoCUS, are currently conducting a post-match investigation to identify those involved in Sunday’s disturbances.

“Anyone found to be responsible can expect to be robustly dealt with and may find themselves banned from attending further matches in the future.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Wifi to be introduced at 25 railway stations across Scotland

Free wi-fi will be rolled out at 25 ScotRail stations across the country, ScotRail and Transport Scotland revealed today.

And all 38 of ScotRail’s Class 380 trains will have wi-fi by March 2014, with trains being fitted at a rate of six or seven a month from October this year thanks to more than £1million of Scottish Government funding.

These trains – the newest in the ScotRail fleet – are used on routes linking Glasgow Central with Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire, as well as Edinburgh-North Berwick/Dunbar.

The expansion of wi-fi represents the latest phase in the Scottish Government’s long-term ambition to provide wi-fi right across Scotland’s railways.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “We are committed to ensuring that rail travel across Scotland is an attractive option for tourists, commuters and business users. Giving passengers the ability to connect to the internet at 25 stations and on all class 380 trains throughout Ayrshire, Inverclyde, Lanarkshire and the Lothians will provide more opportunities for people to switch to the rail network whilst keeping up-to-date with the latest information.

“In 2014, the eyes of the world will be on Scotland and we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase what we have to offer as a modern country. I am pleased that in advance of the major events taking place in 2014, visitors flying into Prestwick and Glasgow International
airports, who then join the rail network, will be able to get access to wi-fi on every train. Combined with the station enhancements, this will help keep Scotland’s railways at the forefront of wi-fi installation. We will continue to explore ways of getting more people connected when
travelling by train between all seven Scottish cities.”

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail managing director, said: “It is exciting that people will be able to enjoy free wi-fi at ScotRail stations for the first time, as well as on board our largest fleet of electric trains.

“We are confident that the expansion of wi-fi will be warmly welcomed by our customers, who increasingly want to stay connected during their journeys, whether for business or to chat with friends.”

The Scottish Government has provided £250,000 to help install wi-fi by December 2013 at Aberdeen, Anniesland, Ayr, Dalmarnock, Dundee, Dunfermline Town, Edinburgh Haymarket, Edinburgh Park, Exhibition Centre, Falkirk High, Fort William, Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street, Helensburgh Central, Inverness, Kilmarnock, Kirkcaldy, Linlithgow, Mount Florida, Paisley Gilmour Street, Partick, Perth, Stirling and Wemyss Bay stations.

Wi-fi will be installed at Gleneagles station as part of its refurbishment in time for next year’s Ryder Cup.

Mr Montgomery said: “We considered several factors when selecting stations to receive wi-fi, including footfall, how long people stay in the station, number of services and the impact of major events, such as the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup. We have longer term plans for further stations to receive wi-fi in future.”

Fitting of wi-fi to Class 380s will take place at Shields Depot in Glasgow during routine weekend maintenance between October 2013 and March 2014, avoiding any impact upon customers.

Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “This is great news and a first-class project from both the Scottish Government and ScotRail.

“The ability for businesses to remain connected whilst travelling will enable us to be more productive and makes best use of our time. There is no doubt this will encourage more people to travel by rail.”

The expansion builds upon the ongoing installation of wi-fi on all 59 of ScotRail’s Class 170 express trains.

ScotRail’s free wi-fi service allows access to email, web browsing and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

This announcement by Scotrail does not affect Waverley Station which is managed by Network Rail and there is wifi at the station provided by The Cloud, BT and T-Mobile on a paid for basis.

Breathe In to open Edinburgh International Film Festival

Award-winning director-writer Drake Doremus’ moving and beautifully acted BREATHE IN will be the Opening Night film at the 67th edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).

Starring Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan, BREATHE IN will have its European Premiere on Wednesday 19 June at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh with Felicity Jones and Drake Doremus in attendance. The film will open nationwide on 19 July through Curzon Film World.

Chris Fujiwara, EIFF Artistic Director, said: ‘In a healthy year for American cinema, BREATHE IN is clearly a stand-out. It’s an emotionally powerful, beautifully understated and intelligent work from director-writer Drake Doremus, who reveals tremendous sensitivity, style and skill. He also draws superb performances from Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. BREATHE IN is the ideal opening film for our festival this year.’

BREATHE IN director Drake Doremus said: ‘I’m very excited that BREATHE IN has been selected to play the Edinburgh International Film Festival and to be given the opening night slot is overwhelming. I now look forward to visiting Edinburgh and celebrating not just the event but the Festival’s recognition of a film I am incredibly proud of.’

As summer turns to fall, music teacher Keith Reynolds (Guy Pearce) privately reminisces about his days as a starving artist in the city. While his wife, Megan (Amy Ryan), and daughter, Lauren (Mackenzie Davis), look forward to Lauren’s final year of high school, Keith clings to those evenings he’s called on to sub as a cellist with a prestigious Manhattan symphony. Megan decides the family should host a foreign exchange student. Sophie (Felicity Jones), a British high school senior, settles in comfortably, but soon challenges the family dynamics. She reinvigorates the impulsiveness of Keith’s personality which ultimately pushes their seemingly perfect family into unfamiliar territory.

Writer/director Drake Doremus, winner of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for LIKE CRAZYreunites with co-writer Ben York Jones and producers Jonathon Schwartz, Andrea Sperling, Steven M. Rales and Mark Roybal for this revealing family drama.

Five things you need to know today

Edinburgh Airport on the up – Penguins at the Central Library – Council report card – Pandas – Commander Hadfield

The total number of passengers using Edinburgh Airport rose last month by over 34,000, an increase of 4.4% compared to the same time last year.

Scotland’s busiest airport continues its return to growth with a total of 801,576 people travelling through the airport in April.

International traffic saw the biggest jump with 433,753 passengers, up 10% from the previous year. However, domestic figures suffered slightly and dropped by 1.4% with a total of 367,823 people passing through the airport.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said:- “It’s clear to see that April was a very busy month for Edinburgh Airport and we’re delighted to see so many passengers travelling with us.

“April’s passenger numbers are no doubt a result of the recent launch of easyJet’s new European routes, as well as the new flights from Ryanair and the start of Virgin Atlantic’s new Little Red service to Heathrow.

“We’re on course for a bumper summer season with introduction of our new summer schedule, as well as the new Air Canada Rouge service to Toronto which will launch in July. This is hugely exciting and will help promote Edinburgh and Scotland to a new and exciting market.”

  • The pool contains approx. 1,200m3 of water or 1.2 million litres of water
  • This is enough 4,000 bathes, to flush a toilet 120,000 times or to fill ½ an Olympic swimming pool.
  • The main pool is 65 metre long main pool, which is 3.5 metres at its deepest point.

The present Labour/SNP council have now been in power for just over a year. They published their Coalition Pledges at the beginning of the year and have been brave enough to explain on their website what their progress is with each one.

The first is a pledge to ensure that every child has the best start in life. This has six separate parts to it , and you can read the council’s report on each part by clicking the link. The council scores 50% in relation to these pledges. They say that they are on track with 3 out of 6 of the pledges, but more work needs done on the other three, including the provision of Portobello High School which has been stalled pending a Private Bill which has been presented to Holyrood. The bill is aimed at changing the law so that a new school can be built on Portobello Park.

1. Increase support for vulnerable children, including help for families so that fewer go into care

2. Hold the maximum P1 class size at 25 and seek to reduce class sizes in line with Scottish Government recommendations

3. Rebuild Portobello High School and continue progress on all other planned school developments, while providing adequate investment in the fabric of all schools

4. Draw up a long-term strategic plan to tackle both over-crowding and under use in schools

5. Seek to ensure the smooth introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence and that management structures within our schools support the new curriculum

6. Establish city-wide childcare co-operatives for affordable childcare for working parents.

Leigh Griffiths wins Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Season

Within the space of 24 hours, Leigh Griffiths scored his 100th career goal which helped Hibs beat Hearts at Tynecastle for the first time since May 2009, was named Hibs’ Player of the Year at the club’s end of season dinner, won the club’s Goal of the Season for his stunning right foot volley against Dundee United in November AND won the prestigious Clydesdale Bank Player of the Season award.

These honours come on top of the PFA Young Player of the Year award he won last week, and the future looks bright for the 22 year old who now hopes to cap an excellent season with a Scottish Cup Winners medal against Celtic on Sunday 26th May. Before that however he is determined to help Hibs grab two victories against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night then Dundee this weekend.

After the award ceremony, Leigh said: “It’s down to consistency, even when the team’s not been playing well, I’ve still managed to score goals. I’ve been working on the training park on my link up play and my touches and other things I can add to my game and thankfully it has paid off. I didn’t even know it was my 100th goal, but it was not a bad way to get it. We want to get as much momentum as we can, going into the cup final. There are two important league games to go, we want to get six points and finish in seventh place.

“I’ve spoken to Wolves but I just want to concentrate on the here and now. There’s a lot to play for, and a lot to be decided as well.”

Leigh was born and brought up in the capital and is a lifelong supporter of the club he now plays for. As a youngster, he was a regular at Easter Road, when not honing the football skills which brought him to the attention of Livingston.

He made his debut for Livingston as a sixteen-year-old then went on trial to West Bromwich Albion in April 2009 and impressed manager Tony Mowbray, but when he left for Celtic, Leigh returned to West Lothian. In 47 games, Leigh scored 22 goals before Dundee paid £125,000 for his services. Leigh quickly became a fans’ favourite at Dens Park where he scored three goals to help Dundee win the 2009–10 Scottish Challenge Cup. In total, he scored 34 goals in 62 appearances, which brought him to the attention of Mick McCarthy at Premier League Wolves who paid £150,000 for his signature.

Unfortunately for Leigh, thing didn’t work out as planned at Molineux and he only managed one appearance in the famous black and gold strip; as a substitute in a League Cup tie at Northampton Town.

In August 2011, Colin Calderwood signed Leigh on a short term loan, and when he was replaced by Pat Fenlon, Leigh agreed to stay until the end of the season and his goals helped Hibs to the Scottish Cup Final and to escape relegation.

This season, Leigh has been a revelation, scoring an incredible 28 goals, including a hat-trick against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final, and two more in the Semi-Final against Falkirk. He also made his Scotland debut against Luxembourg.

After the Cup Final however, Leigh’s future remains in doubt. His parent club Wolves have indicated that they wanted to take advantage of the one year option they hold on his contract, and that would mean that he would start next season in the third tier of English football after the Midlands’ Club were relegated at the end of the season.

To make matter even more uncertain, last season’s manager Dean Saunders was sacked and the club are currently looking for a replacement.

Manager Pat Fenlon insists that Hibs are doing everything within their power to keep Leigh at Easter Road; however he concedes that that final decision is out-with the club’s control.

Whatever happens, Leigh’s place in the Hibs history books has already been assured.

Ecology Centre visits Botanics

WINDS OF FUN AS ECOLOGY CENTRE VISITS BOTANIC GARDEN

Fife-based centre hosts stall at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Local children had the chance to learn more about the importance of wind and natural energy sources at the weekend, when they were treated to an event ran by mobile project, the Eco Explorers, at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the Ecology Centre’s Eco Explorers offered little ones in the capital the chance to learn more about solar, wind and kinetic energy and discover how saving energy can help to save the planet. They also had the chance to create their own windmills to take home and test out on the day (Robbie (8) & Abby (9) MacGregor pictured).

The interactive stall at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh also had a solar powered race car, a bike that the youngsters could use to cycle and light up bulbs and a generator-powered Skalextric track.

Claire Reid, Education Manager, Ecology Centre, said: “We were delighted that so many families came along on the day. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is also supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery so it was perfect and offered us a great green location to promote a more sustainable way of living and playing for children in Edinburgh.

“Thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery and the Dream Fund, the Eco Explorers is travelling around Edinburgh, Fife and Tayside, visiting schools and encouraging children in a fun and interactive way to learn more about what they and their families can do to make a difference.”

The Ecology Centre is a community based charity which was established as a non-profit making organisation in August 1998. They received over £53,000 in 2012 from the Dream Fund for the Eco Explorers, an interactive resource that allows them to teach classrooms about nature and climate change, using hands-on play, and providing examples of solar and water power.

Spy in the Huddle came to Edinburgh Zoo

Yesterday a collection of spycams from renowned BBC programme Spy in the Huddle visited Penguins Rock at Edinburgh Zoo, and some young rockhopper penguins made new friends with their spycam doppelgänger and started trying to preen it!

Nick Dowling, Senior Keeper for Birds at Edinburgh Zoo commented:-“Our rockhoppers in particular were very interested in one of the rockhopper cams and some seemed to bond with it and tried preening it. Others enjoyed giving it an inquisitive peck during their playful investigations. As our penguins are more used to human interaction when compared to colonies in the wild, they showed little apprehension towards the cameras and were immediately curious about the new additions to their colony.

“The egg cams also caused quite a stir with a couple of concerned patrons, who were watching Penguin Cam at home, contacting Edinburgh Zoo as they thought it was a real egg out the nest. At one point a crow even tried to steal it!”

Philip Dalton, Spy in the Huddle Producer said:-“Each penguin’s response to the cameras is very individual. Some accept it as one of their own and try to bond with it through preening behaviour, while some are inquisitive and try to peck it.”

John Downer Productions, the company that created Spy in the Huddle, filmed the Zoo’s colony of king, rockhopper and gentoo penguins with the same spycams used to film penguins in the wild. The spycams included two life-size rockhopper cams – one static, one animatronic – and two egg cams, with footage streamed live into the penguin hut for visitors to view.

He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six Dorsetshire farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to harsh transportation by an oppressive Government for having the temerity to swear a secret oath and form a union to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowners.

This vitally important story is told using the entertaining theatrical style developed through our production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists; through Andy Vine’s powerful political cartoons and animation; through puppetry and the exquisite musical arrangements by revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick, of the songs and rallying hymns of the Dorset labouring classes that resound down the years.
