This week’s photo comes form Kathleen McGovern, and was taken on the club’s recent trip to the Terracotta Warriors exhibition in Edinburgh University.

The Stockbridge Photography Club is a non-profit photography club that aims to operate in a different way from the traditional photography club mould. They have informal monthly meetings where they discuss their photos over a cup of coffee and learn about the month’s theme.

Outside of this, they arrange photowalks and trips to various locations and landmarks in and around Edinburgh, providing their members with something interesting to photograph, whilst always having someone on hand to answer any questions.

Their exhibition is ongoing, and Rosie McKenzie has kindly extended the running time. Why not pop into her gallery on St Stephen Street? Everybody is welcome, and all proceeds go to charity.

Our brand new website launched last week, and over the coming months we plan to add new features! Visit their website (stockbridgephotographyclub.co.uk) for more information.

February Half Term at the National Museum of Flight

An entirely different kind of ‘kite’ that can be viewed at the museum

Kites from around the world will be flying high this half term at the National Museum of Flight, from Saturday 8 to Sunday 16 February.

Visitors to the popular attraction will be treated to impressive displays of kite-flying from the North East Kite Fliers on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February. Taking to the sky will be the Sunderland Friendship Kite whose tail is the longest in Europe at 100 metres in length, as well as eye-catching inflatable kites in the shapes of animals, fish and birds, each around 6 metres wide. There will also be a choreographed display of five stunt kites flown together in time to music and young kiteman Josh Mitcheson, age 16, will demonstrate his skill at flying three stunt kites at once. Defying the need for wind, indoor displays of ultra-lightweight kites will take place inside a hangar at the Museum.

Every day until Sunday 16 February, visitors can try their hand at making a kite or hot air balloon and learning to fly it, and marvel at the static display of beautiful kites from the European Air Gallery. The Edo Kites in this collection are unique, each painted by a different artist, such as Kaffe Fassett.

Tours departing at 12pm and 2pm will offer visitors a rare chance to see the East Fortune Airfield Control Tower which dates from the Second World War.

The Museum’s hangars will be open for visitors to enjoy the attraction’s popular Fantastic Flight gallery with its hands-on, interactive exhibits, and explore the aviation collections.

Half term activities at the National Museum of Flight run from Saturday 8 February to Sunday 16 February, from 10am until 4pm. Tickets cost Adult £9.50, Conc £7.50, Child £5 (under 5’s free), family ticket £24 (2 adults and 2 children), members free. Tickets can be booked online at www.nms.ac.uk or by calling 0300 123 6789.

England Women’s Head Coach Gary Street has made 13 changes to the team which ran out against France for Sunday’s Six Nations second round clash against Scotland at Aberdeen Grammar (2pm).

Only skipper Katy Mclean, Rachael Burford and Emily Scarratt, who moves to fullback, start a second successive game whilst vice-captain Sarah Hunter and flanker Marlie Packer are also given the nod again.

England duo Mercedes Foy and Sasha Acheson could be set to make their Six Nations debuts as they are named on the bench. Joanne McGilchrist also returns to international action for the first time this season.

Street, whose side were defeated 18-6 by France on Saturday, said: “After a thoroughly disappointing opener to France, it is vital that we bounce back against Scotland and get our Six Nations campaign back on track.

“There are lots of changes to this team but I was always planning on using the majority of our World Cup training squad over the first two games. This is a chance for all the players to put their hands up for the game against Ireland at Twickenham on February 22. We’ve had a good hard look at the game and we are certainly looking to improve in all areas on Sunday but especially around the breakdown. We know we can and will improve, and we have got a big point to prove on Sunday.

“We know Scotland will be up for it at home and need to come out firing. We will not lack any motivation for the game. I want to get our season back on track and show the quality we know we have.”

Edinburgh MP speaks out on deregulation

TER BIg BenIn a debate on the Deregulation Bill in Parliament this week, Mark Lazarowicz MP warned against proposals in the Government’s Deregulation Bill which could undermine vital protection for the public. He said that while it is right to look at the effects of regulation on economic growth, proper regulation is also vital to prevent accidents and protect lives, stop workers being exploited by rogue employers, and promote sustainable development.

Mark’s speech in full can be found by clicking here.

Speaking after the debate, Mark said:-“This Bill has 69 clauses and covers at least 12 Government Departments but it is no substitute for a real industrial strategy to support business.

“Of course it is right to review regulation and get rid of unnecessary red tape. But sensible regulation is necessary for many reasons; for example to protect people from scams or industrial accidents and to promote development that doesn’t damage the environment.

“Who really wants to go back to a time when health and safety legislation in the workplace didn’t exist as if that was the key to growth not innovation or investment?”

Auld Reekie Magic Cabaret going from strength to strength

Banner950x300

Following sell out shows in December and January, Edinburgh magicians John Henry Blackwood and Paul Novak continue to bring unique magic and cabaret entertainment to the heart of Edinburgh.

This February they will move to what they say will hopefully become their new home, the Assembly Roxy. John Henry Blackwood has been amazed by the reaction of the Edinburgh audiences: “The response we’ve had from the audience so far really has spurred us on to make the show even bigger and more amazing with more incredible acts from all over the UK. The Assembly Roxy is a beautiful venue that’s ideally suited to magic and illusion!”

Their first show at the Assembly Roxy 2 Roxburgh Place EH8 9SU will take place at 7.30pm on 10 February 2014 and will feature stage illusions, card magic, mentalism and a few little oddities that will surprise even the biggest magic aficionado. There are even prizes to be won. Tickets range from £8.50 to £10 and can be bought through the Hub Tickets and Ripping Records.

Both Paul and John want to bring magic to as many people as possible, further developing Edinburgh’s personality for awe and inspiration. “Edinburgh is such a magical place and it seemed stupid that we didn’t have something like the Auld Reekie Magic Cabaret here!” said Paul Novak on why he started the show. Following their individual successes at the Fringe 2013 Paul and John feel that although television magic can be entertaining, nothing is as awe-inspiring or as powerful as being fooled up close and in person.

EIF now searching for a Photographer for 2014 festival

Unique Festival opportunity for budding photographer as the Edinburgh International Festival Photographer 2014 competition launches.

Not necessarily what the winner will be involved in.
Not necessarily what the winner will be involved in – this is the Book Festival!

Emerging photographers are being invited to apply for the position of Festival Photographer 2o14 The Edinburgh International Festival and The Morton Charitable Trust

The opportunity for an emerging photographer, based or studying in Scotland gives them unparalleled backstage access across the International Festival to artists, staff, technical set up, rehearsals and events to bring together a rich archive of images of the events. Online galleries throughout the Festival in August can be seen on the Festival website eif.co.uk, and their work is promoted through the Festival’s Facebook and Flickr presences and an exhibition of their work mounted in the autumn.

The position, which comes with a £3,500 award, allows the photographer to develop contacts with a range of media outlets, artists, venues and agencies through the Festival period, providing a strong launch pad for their future career in the profession.

Jonathan Mills, Festival Director, said: ‘The creation of this opportunity for an emerging photographer, established through the support of The Morton Charitable Trust, is building a wonderful archive of images of the Festival which capture its effect far beyond the performances. It opens doors to a huge array of media and artistic contacts which can stand the winner in great stead for their future career. We look forward to welcoming another talented photographer to the team for Festival 2014.’

Stuart Armitt

Stuart Armitt, Festival Photographer in 2013, said: ‘There is no denying the challenges that face new graduates within the creative industries today. To be offered the role of the International Festival’s official photographer 2013 was not only a great privilege but could not have come at a greater time in the development of my career.

‘To say that I have grown in confidence as a photographer is an understatement. Creatively and technically my work has vastly improved; however it is in my professional development that this role really comes into its own. This opportunity has focused my mind on my future development and who I want to be as a photographer. To be offered the opportunity to be part of this festival in the most creative of ways was a privilege. You are allowed access to nearly every part of how a festival on this scale is put together and the people that make it happen. These people made this experience truly unforgettable.’

Those looking to apply can find more information at eif.co.uk/festival-photographer. The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 17 February.

Previous winners of this position include Edinburgh based photographers Claudine Quinn (2010), Eoin Carey (2011), Sally Jubb (2012) and Stuart Armitt (2013).

Stuart’s exhibition of work from Festival 2013 is currently running at The Hub.

RSE names Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell President

image004The outstanding astrophysicist and prominent science communicator Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE, FRS, FRSE is the new President-elect of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The election follows a ballot of all RSE Fellows which saw an overwhelming response in favour of her nomination. She will succeed the current President, Sir John Arbuthnott MRIA, PRSE, in October.

Professor Dame Jocelyn is best known for discovering pulsars, one of the most significant scientific achievements of the twentieth century. These rapidly spinning neutron stars are formed in supernova explosions, the phenomena which make life in the universe possible. At the time Dame Jocelyn was a PhD student in radio astronomy at the University of Cambridge. Her supervisor Antony Hewish subsequently went on to win the 1974 Nobel Prize for Physics in recognition of the discovery, sharing it with the head of the group, Martin Ryle. She has been an influential campaigner in efforts to raise the number and profile of women in professional and academic science posts. In 2013 Dame Jocelyn was named in the BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour ‘Power List’ of the 100 most influential women in the UK. In 2012 she chaired the group that produced the RSE’s highly-regarded Tapping All Our Talents report on a Scottish strategy for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dame Jocelyn will begin her three year tenure as RSE President in October 2014. She takes over from Sir John whose period in office has, amongst several achievements, seen the delivery of the landmark Enlightening the Constitutional Debate series of events and the development of research links with China including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the RSE and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Commenting on the election, Sir John said, ‘I am delighted to welcome Dame Jocelyn as my successor. Her scientific standing, her public profile and her great breadth of experience will greatly benefit the Royal Society of Edinburgh.’

Born in Northern Ireland, Dame Jocelyn graduated in Natural Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in 1965 then gained her PhD from Cambridge in 1969. From 1982 – 1991, she worked at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. She was then appointed Professor of Physics at the Open University and later became Dean of Science at the University of Bath (2001 – 04). In 2004 she became a Fellow of the RSE.

Dame Jocelyn was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 – 2004, and President of the Institute of Physics from 2008 – 2011. She is currently Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford with research interests in neutron stars, micro quasars and gamma ray bursts. She has more than 20 Honorary Degrees, including from Harvard and five Scottish Universities. She received a DBE for services to astronomy in 2007.

Dame Jocelyn said, ‘I look forward to serving the Royal Society of Edinburgh as its President from October this year. This will be an important time for Scotland as it finds its way forward following the referendum.

Edinburgh will take on Ospreys at Meggetland this month

191020-+JLPEdinburghvOspreys-302

Edinburgh Rugby’s next home match against Ospreys on Friday 28 February (kick-off 7.35pm) will be played at Meggetland, the club confirmed today.

Concerns over the current Murrayfield Stadium playing surface – caused by a parasitic infection that damaged the roots – mean the club will relocate the RaboDirect PRO12 clash to ensure the international pitch is in robust health for Scotland’s home fixtures in the 2014 RBS 6 Nations, against England and France.

The move will see the club play its first competitive home match outside of the national stadium since May 2004, when Marcus Di Rollo, Andrew Dall and Joel Brannigan crossed the whitewash in the club’s 19-17 win over Glasgow at Meadowbank.

Edinburgh Rugby managing director, David Davies, said: “Everyone at the club is really excited about this temporary move to Meggetland. “We’ve taken a lot of time and care to select the best venue for this fixture and that limits the inconvenience to our fans. We’re working hard to make the most of this opportunity to pack out the stands with black and red. Pre-sales and season ticket memberships mean that the ground – which can hold about 3,000 – is already at 85% of capacity, so we urge all fans to buy their tickets early and guarantee their place at this great opportunity to cheer on the club at close quarters.”

Davies continued: “On behalf of Edinburgh Rugby I’d like to express our sincerest thanks to our fans for their understanding and support of this relocation, to the staff at Edinburgh Leisure, which manages the venue on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council, and Boroughmuir RFC, for their help in hosting this fixture. We look forward to building a positive working relationship and making this match a success.”

Parking at Meggetland is restricted to disabled patrons with a blue badge.

To help fans get to the ground Edinburgh Rugby are running a park and ride scheme from the Saughtonhall car park at Murrayfield Stadium.

Those wishing to use this service must note their interest in advance by emailing info@edinburghrugby.org, noting their preferred shuttle time of 5.50pm, 6.10pm, 6.30pm or 6.50pm.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Culture & Sport Convener, City of Edinburgh Council, said: “Since the council’s multi-million pound investment in Meggetland in 2006, it has become one of the best-used outdoor sports facilities in the city.

“I am delighted that Edinburgh Rugby have chosen to play here and hope that, with the support of Edinburgh Leisure and ourselves, the match is a success both on the pitch and off it. We are very aware that this is a residential area and will ensure that all travel options are explored.”

Ken Harvey, Head of Customer Operations at Edinburgh Leisure, said: “Edinburgh Leisure is thrilled to welcome Edinburgh Rugby back to our flagship sports pitch at Meggetland.

“The home game against Ospreys is an exciting highlight of the sporting calendar, and we will be working with Edinburgh Rugby and the local community we serve to ensure the event is a fantastic success.”

Tickets for Edinburgh Rugby’s clash with Ospreys are on sale now priced from £5 for under-18s, £10 for students and senior citizens and £20 for adults.

A letter to all reserved and unreserved season ticket members outlining their specific seating, entrance and parking arrangements will be mailed out shortly, while general information, from ticketing to finding the ground, will be available on the club’s website, www.edinburghrugby.org.

Lineen makes changes to meet England U20s at Netherdale

Scotland celebrate following last years defeat of Ireland
Scotland celebrate following last year’s defeat of Ireland

Head coach Sean Lineen has made a number of changes to the side that took on their Irish counterparts in Athlone last weekend, for the team to meet England at Netherdale on Friday (7 February).

Both the Scots and the English lost in their opening matches of their 6 Nations and will be looking to redress their defeats, with Scotland looking forward to the backing of a home crowd at the Borders ground.
Jamie Farndale (wing), Neil Herron (inside centre) and Ben Chalmers (stand-off) are the only backs to retain their positions in the starting XV, with Damien Hoyland moving from outside centre to the wing. Coming off the bench are full back Ruairidh Young and last Friday’s try scorer Ben Vellacott (scrum half) while extended squad member Blair Hutchison comes in at outside centre.
The forward pack has also undergone a reshuffle, prop Jack Cosgrove elevated from the bench to start, and Buchan Richardson and Magnus Bradbury swapping positions in the back three, at flanker and no 8 respectively. New on to the bench in the front row is Glasgow Hawks’ Chris Barnes with Scotland 7s’ Chris Dean and former England under-18, Northampton Saints Academy and Canterbury flanker Gabriel Carroll joining the squad.
Lineen said: “We need to improve on the Irish game. It was a steep learning curve for the players but they have responded well in training this week. We now face the current world champions, England, chock full of Aviva and even Heineken experience. We need to match their physicality across the field and play to our strengths. Everyone is looking for a big performance and we need a huge home support to create a special atmosphere on the night”
Kick-off at Netherdale on Friday is 7.30pm with admission free to under-18s – concessions are £5 and adults £10. The match will also be streamed live via Scottish Rugby’s YouTube channel, Scottishrugbyonline.

Motherwell U20s 0-3 Hibernian U20s

Paul.Cairney

Hibs returned to the top of the SPFL under 20s league albeit for a few hours with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Motherwell at Broadwood Stadium yesterday thanks to goals from Jason Cummings, Tom Gardiner and Paul Heffernan.

Head of Academy Coaching James McDonaugh selected an experienced lone up which included first team regulars Heffernan, Cummings, Paul Cairney (pictured) and Danny Handling.

Hibs took the lead in the 15th minutes when Cummings scored his 31st goal of the season when he connected with Euan Smith’s cross and his header deflected off a Motherwell defender into the net.

Former Tottenham Hotspurs defender Gardiner added a second just after the break with a fine header from a Ryan Baptie cross before experienced striker Heffernan sealed the victory with a header midway through the second half,

After the game McDonaugh told Hibernian TV: “I thought we always looked likely to score, we were 1-0 up at half-time and we had good chances from Tom Gardiner and Paul Heffernan. We were getting the ball into the box and we were getting the ball into good areas.

“At the start of the second half we were better and played a lot smoother and slicker. But I still thought that there was still a wee bit more to come from the players to be honest – but that was maybe asking for too much.

“It’s very good to come away from home and keep a clean sheet and win the match.

“We’re happy to obviously come away from home and we’ve changed our team again and Motherwell have been going great guns and winning most of their games.

“To come here and score three goals and keep a clean sheet we’re happy with that.”

“I was delighted for the back four of Baptie, Wilson, Gardiner and Black, they have had to play a lot of games together and maybe have been unfortunate not to have kept as many clean sheets as they have.

“Paul himself was excellent. He kicked the ball really well, he came and caught crosses, he took the pressure off and he always looks comfortable. I was delighted for the five of them; it was great to get a clean sheet.”

“Tom (Gardiner) chips in with his goals and he just seems to find a way of losing his marker in the opposition box. He blocks things at the other end of the pitch and is really settling down now. We’re hoping that he’ll kick on and have a good chance at the Club.”

Hibernian under-20s: Grant, Black, Baptie, Horribine, Wilson, Gardiner, Smith, Cairney, Heffernan, Handling, Cummings. Unused substitutes: Horne, Dunsmore, Martyniuk, Todd, McCaffrey, Martin, Beaton.

Daniel Boateng hopes Butcher factor will help career

2013_09 HIBS 6

Hibs’ new loan signing Daniel Boateng was paraded at the East Mains Training Centre yesterday where he  admitted that his knowledge of Scottish football comes from the internet although he was aware of the pedigree of manager Terry Butcher and believes that learning from the former England captain can only help his career.

Speaking at the weekly press conference, the 6ft  2in defender said: “I played a game against Chelsea on the Friday and then my agent called me and said that Terry Butcher was interested in signing me. I looked at my options and I thought ‘why not come to Scotland?’ I was certainly up for the challenge although I didn’t know too much about Hibs and I had to go on the internet and Google them. I knew they were a big club in the Scottish Premier League and at that point I thought ‘why not.’”

“I thought I am a defender myself and he (Butcher) played for England back in the day so I knew he could be of help to myself.”

Arsene Wenger has already given the youngster his debut in the  full Arsenal side and he has experience of playing alongside some of the biggest names in the game.

He continued: “I came into the Arsenal first team against Bolton at 19 and in that squad was Thomas Vermaelen, Yossi Benayoun, Andrei Arshavin, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Per Mertesacker.

“Training with the first team on a regular basis is no big deal but when you step out on to the pitch in front of 60,000 supporters at the Emirates Stadium, that is exciting and that’s what footballers want to do and you can’t get enough of it.”

If Boateng expected an easy ride in the SPFL, then his first training session with his new team mates quickly changed his mind.

“The Hibs squad is very good, however the game is so physical in Scotland. I have only taken part in one training session so far  and I did not expect it to be that physical, but it’s is nothing that I can’t handle but I will get used to it. I will learn to handle the physical approach and make it suit my game as I am up for the challenge. It is best for me and my career if I play games now and that is what I want to do. I believe I can do well in Scotland.”

Boateng will join an illustrious list of players who have played for both Hibs and Arsenal over the years if he pulls on the green and white jersey this weekend against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup. Willie Harper, Joe Baker, Peter Marinello and Alex Cropley immediately spring to mind, although more recently Anthony Stokes, Dean Shiels and Graham Stack made the journey north.

David Bailey Exhibition to sprinkle a little stardust over Edinburgh

BAILEY’S STARDUST is coming to the Scottish National Gallery – but not till Summer 2015!

David Bailey’s landmark exhibition Bailey’s Stardust will be on show in Edinburgh at the Scottish National Gallery in summer 2015, the National Galleries of Scotland announced today. Hundreds of photographs by Bailey, one of the world’s most famous photographers will be on show from July to October 2015. The Scottish showing of the Bailey exhibition has been generously sponsored by Baillie Gifford & Co. Bailey’s Stardust will be on show in Edinburgh 14 years after the lauded 2001 Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art exhibition David Bailey: Birth of the Cool.

  • The largest exhibition of David Bailey’s portraits to shown in the UK
  • Over 250 portraits including rooms devoted to The Rolling Stones, Bailey’s travels, Box of Pin Ups, Catherine Bailey, icons of fashion and arts – some seen in public for the first time

The landmark exhibition opens at the National Portrait Gallery, London this week (6 February 2014) sponsored by Hugo Boss.  Selected by the photographer, Bailey’s Stardust will be one of the Gallery’s larger-scale photography exhibitions, with over 250 portraits occupying most of its ground floor.

One of the world’s most distinguished and distinctive photographers, David Bailey has made an outstanding contribution to the visual arts, creating consistently imaginative and thought-provoking portraits. As well as including new work, this exhibition contains a wide variety of Bailey’s photographs from a career that has spanned more than half a century.

The portraits have been personally selected by Bailey from the subjects and groups that he captured over the last five decades: photographers, actors, writers, musicians, filmmakers, fashion icons, designers, models, artists and people encountered on his travels; many of them famous, some unknown, all of them engaging and memorable. Bailey will be making new silver gelatin prints of his black-and-white portraits especially for the exhibition.

Bailey’s Stardust is structured thematically, with iconic images presented alongside many lesser-known portraits, its title reflecting the notion that we are all made from, and return to, ‘stardust’.  Portraits of a wide range of sitters – from the glamorous to the impoverished, the famous to the notorious – are presented in a series of contrasting rooms, and through images of skulls and pregnancy, powerful meditations on birth and death.

There will be rooms devoted to Bailey’s travels in Australia, Delhi and the Naga Hills, as well as icons from the worlds of fashion and the arts, and people of the East End of London. There will be selections from two of Bailey’s most acclaimed bodies of work: the Box of Pin-Ups, which helped define the 1960s through arresting studies of key figures, and Bailey’s Democracy, in which people visiting his studio were asked if they would agree to be photographed naked.

Rooms devoted to striking portraits of The Rolling Stones and Catherine Bailey contrast with remarkable documentary photographs from the photographer’s expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1974 and moving images of those devastated by the famine in east Africa, taken in support of the Band Aid charity in 1985.

David Bailey’s many publications include Eye (2009), Is that So Kid (2008), NY JS DB 62 (2007), Bailey’s Democracy (2005),Locations – The 1970s Archive (2003), Chasing Rainbows (2001), Archive One – The 1960s (1999) and Box of Pin-Ups (1964).

Sandy Nairne, Director, National Portrait Gallery, London, says: Bailey’s Stardust is a very special event. It offers an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the widest range of the mercurial portraits created by David Bailey, one of the world’s greatest image-makers.’

Christopher Baker, Director, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh added:

‘We are delighted to be hosting this landmark exhibition of the full range of David Bailey’s outstanding photography. From iconic portraits of the 1960s and ‘70s to his later global projects this exhibition will demonstrate the extraordinary range and consistent quality of his work. We are thrilled to share his incredible achievement with Edinburgh during the International Festival of 2015.’

Gerd von Podewils, Senior Vice President Global Communication at HUGO BOSS AG, says:

‘David Bailey is a master in his field. Photography and fashion are highly intertwined and therefore we are very honoured to be able to support this career-spanning and unique exhibition.’

Sarah Whitley, Partner at Baillie Gifford, sponsor of the Scottish showing of Bailey’s Stardust, added:

“We are very pleased to support excellence in the arts and especially this exhibition – it will be an amazing flagship event for the 2015 Edinburgh Festival.”

Equal Marriage – EdinburghReportage – Council meeting – Digital Sentinel – Tonight at Carberry Tower

The Scottish Parliament voted yesterday evening to pass the Same Sex Marriage Bill.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Alex Neil said:

“This is a historic moment for equality in Scotland.

“I am proud that the Scottish Parliament has taken this progressive and hugely important decision in favour of equal rights in our country.

“It is right that same sex couples should be able to freely express their love and commitment to each other through getting married. Marriage is about love, and that has always been at the heart of this issue.

“That was the clear message from Scotland’s Parliament today. We must no longer allow same sex couples who wish to get married to be barred from doing so.

“Thanks to this bill, same sex couples now have the same access to marriage – one of our most important institutions – as everyone else.

“There has been overwhelming support for this Bill from the beginning and many MSPs from across the political spectrum have expressed considered, personal opinions.

“We now need to work quickly and in close co-operation with Westminster on implementation. On that basis, I very much look forward to seeing the first same sex marriages taking place in Scotland as soon as is possible.”

Thomas Haywood was there to watch the important milestone and take some photos of those supporting the bill. More here.

The full council meets tomorrow at the City Chambers and we will be there to report on proceedings. The meeting will also be webcast so that you can follow everything live.

One of the questions put to the council relates to the Lord Provost’s expenses which we explain further here.

Wester Hailes used to have a newspaper prior to council cuts which then made it impossible for papers like the West Edinburgh Times (formerly known as the Sentinel) or the North Edinburgh News to continue.

The Digital Sentinel is aiming to be a new online version of the local paper, but it needs input from locals either as volunteer reporters or as sources of local stories. You can join in by going along to WHALE Arts today at 1.00pm or to Wester Hailes Library at 5.30 until 7.00pm. The Digital Sentinel is funded by Carnegie UK Trust’s Neighbourhood News fund and there is training available to turn you into a citizen journalist.

Council to be quizzed over Lord Provost’s expenses

The Lord Provost is the city’s civic head, holds office as the Lord Lieutenant and in that capacity is the person who greets the Queen on her visits to the capital to hand over the keys to the city. The incumbent has a duty to represent and promote the city at a variety of civic engagements throughout the year as its principal ambassador.

We are perhaps all ambassadors for our city, but as an elected official the Lord Provost gets paid for his ambassadorial role.

The salary paid to all councillors is set out in a Guidance memo by The Scottish Government from 2010 which prescribed the sum of £36,528 in salary for the Lord Provosts of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

A question has been lodged for answer at tomorrow’s full council meeting by Councillor Cameron Rose who is the Conservative Group leader and who represents the Southside/Newington Ward.

The full question is as follows:-

“Given the forecast spend of £433,000 by the Lord Provost’s office on staff (an increase of 103% over the 2013/14 budget) and the explanation that the Lord Provost’s office covers an unexpectedly large number of events, please provide

  1. The number of events over each of the last five years
  2. An explanation of why the budgeted 2.89 staff in the Lord Provost’s Office has been augmented by four additional staff at a cost of £145,000 (not including the staff designated as city officers)
  3. What has been the turnover of staff within the Lord Provost’s Office in 2012/13 and 2013/14?
  4. How many of the anticipated 900 engagements organised by the Lord Provost’s Office for 2013/14 have been/are anticipated to be attended/facilitated the Lord Provost and how many by his deputy and the five Baillies?”

We imagine that this question may have arisen after recent articles in The Edinburgh Evening News about the Lord Provost which focussed  on some individual expenses incurred by his office, most notably the alteration made to the Lord Provost’s kilt. These figures were, we understand, leaked to The Edinburgh Evening News before Christmas. While The Edinburgh Reporter has not had sight of such figures we have made our own enquiries, in the climate of some £31.7m cumulative savings which have to be made during the next financial year. The council’s budget meeting next week will set the administration spending for 2014/15.

We understand that there are now 11 and a half full time jobs within the Lord Provost’s office compared with 8 and a half previously allocated there. The Edinburgh Reporter has also been advised that the ‘overspend’ may be accounted for at least in part by the sums allocated to the Lord Provost’s department being allocated differently from before, and that historically there may have been an accounting ‘overspend’ of £250,000, but we await the response to Councillor Rose’s question at tomorrow’s meeting to clarify the position.

As well as paying for staff, the Lord Provost’s office is also responsible for salary and expenses relating to the Depute Lord Provost, Councillor Deidre Brock.

Over November and December the Lord Provost attended 55 events and made 30 speeches.

The main events which he attended included:-

Hordaland Night Light Christmas Lights Switch on with Chris Hoy – 24 November 2013

Hannukah lights switch on Menorah – 2 December 2013

Marie Curie Lights to Remember switch on  – 12 December 2013

Lord Provost Christmas Party – 13 December 2013

Torchlight Procession – 30 December 2013

Shelter Scotland 45th Anniversary – 9 December 2013

There are 23 Deputy Lieutenants who include notable Edinburgh residents such as Ian Rankin, Sir Tom Farmer and former rugby player Sean Lineen. Although Deputy Lieutenants do not receive a salary they are entitled to claim for expenses which are also paid from the budget for the Lord Provost’s department.

The Lord Provost has 5 Baillies who may represent him at events which he cannot fit into his busy schedule, and these  include Councillors Norman Work, Melanie Main, Robert Aldridge, Angela Blacklock and Elaine Aitken. Any expenses they incur are also covered in this budget.

In addition the Lord Provost’s budget also covers events such as the Hogmanay Party co-hosted with Councillor Steve Cardownie and the Christmas Party mentioned above, when the Lord Provost invites representatives of the community councils, other councillors and others who have perhaps been involved with fundraising during the year. The Lord Provost introduced the Community Garden Party at Lauriston Castle last summer when he invited 500 guests to join him in the gardens. The purpose of this was to recognise volunteers and unsung heroes otherwise overlooked. The event was supported by Virgin Money.

In the Revenue Budget Framework for 2014/15 to 2017/18 prepared in October last year the amount allocated to the Lord Provost’s office is analysed and the gross expenditure allocated to the Lord Provost’s office is stated as £0.39m for the current year. If indeed the Lord Provost’s department has now spent £433,000 in the last year then that would appear to be an apparent overspend on the figure set aside for it.

Councillor Rose has made no claim for expenses in 2013-14 as yet, and only claimed £118.78 in the previous year for mobile phone charges.

DSC03840In terms of the Government Guidance all councillors are also reimbursed for their expenses relating to approved council business, including travel and subsistence expenses for approved duties. All travel claims start from the councillor’s own home or residence, and the mileage charges are prescribed by Parliament. The Lord Provost has an official car which he uses for council business. In November 2012 he blogged about the possibility of replacing the official car with a Lexus which has not yet happened.

Several Freedom of Information requests have been made this year relating to the Lord Provost, the first lodged on 6 January. (Although the council is obliged to divulge any FOI requests, it does not have to identify the person making it.)

EDIR 2295 Lord Provost’s formal engagements

How many of Donald Wilson (Lord Provost’s) formal engagements since he took office have been formal dinners or lunches?

How many have involved formal dinners or lunches at some stage as part of the event?

Donald Wilson has attended 101 engagements as Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant since he took office, comprising or involving formal lunches or dinners.

How many have involved the offer of canapés and or snacks and drinks?

In addition he has attended 81 receptions where refreshments may have been served. A record of the refreshments offered is not held.

Lord Provost’s kilt

Request no. 2366Received: 10/01/2014, Resolved: 16/01/2014

The date the council initially paid for Lord Provost’s kilt to be let out and the date the money, believed to be £250, was subsequently repaid.

This request has been answered thus:-

“We can advise you of the following in response to your request.

  • The Council paid the invoice on 6 November 2013.
  • £300 was repaid in cash on 20 November 2013 as confirmed by way of receipt from Corporate Transactional Services.
  • The exact cost was £250 plus vat.
  • No claim has been made by the Lord Provost for additional expenses incurred in carrying out civic duties.”

We were advised by the council that the amount paid for alterations to the kilt was repaid by the Lord Provost who did not personally go to pick up the kilt after it was altered, leaving it for a city officer to deal with and then repay the sum to the council afterwards. What is clear is that the Lord Provost has paid for his own kilt alterations.

The Guidance sets out a further limit of £5,000 of expenses which the civic head may charge, and which would cover for example the cost of hiring clothes to attend civic functions or some sort of personal hospitality in connection with holding the office of Lord Provost.

A further FOI request has asked for copies of email correspondence into and out of the Lord Provost’s office between 5 & 25 November 2013 but no answer has yet been offered. The council in common with all other public bodies affected by the Freedom of Information Scotland Act has 20 days within which to respond to the enquiry.

Rugby – Brand new pitch to be installed at Murrayfield!

EdinReport NMP-1

Scottish Rugby is making the biggest single investment in its Murrayfield home since the stadium was reconstructed in 1994.

A new hybrid grass pitch will be installed later this year to be ready for the start of the 2014-15 season, it was announced today.

“We are doing this primarily because this hybrid pitch is widely recognised as the best grass surface in the sporting world and we all want to see the Murrayfield playing surface restored to the pristine condition for which it is renowned,” said Scottish Rugby’s Director of Management Services, Mark Laidlaw.
The Desso Grassmaster hybrid grass pitch is a natural sports grass pitch, which is reinforced by millions of artificial turf fibres.
“This results in a high-specification pitch providing the feel and performance of natural grass with the stability of an artificial pitch,” Laidlaw explained.
One of the key advantages of the Desso Grassmaster pitch is that it has a faster recovery than natural grass alone and that it can be used intensively, hosting more than 40 fixtures in a season.
“This is an investment that will safeguard international rugby on Murrayfield’s hallowed pitch but will also enable us to be in the market seeking out major sporting events to bring to our stadium,” said Scottish Rugby’s Director of Commercial Operations, Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay.
The new pitch will be based on the system already installed at such celebrated sporting citadels as the San Siro Stadium in Milan; Annfield at Liverpool FC; Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium;  Manchester United’s Old Trafford; Arsenal’s Emirates’ Stadium; and Wembley.
In the rugby world, Twickenham, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Newlands in Cape Town, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth and the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin all have the pitch installed.
Scotland’s cap and points’ record-holder Chris Paterson said: “One of the best surfaces I played on was the pitch at the Liberty Stadium, which sees heavy usage as both the Ospreys and Swansea City FC play there.
“It’s a Desso Grassmaster pitch – a great surface that lends itself to a fast-paced game.”
Laidlaw added: “We are making this significant investment because, as we’ve said previously, we are concerned at the problems our pitch and others within the UK and beyond have experienced of late and feel that a reinforced surface is now required to meet the demands of professional rugby. We have been affected by a parasitic infection this season and the challenges of keeping Murrayfield accessible in probably the most challenging rugby climate in the northern hemisphere.”
While having a wee, sympathetic chat with one or two of the ground staff earlier on this season The Edinburgh Reporter was told that the guys are out, in all weathers, up to six days a week to keep the current pitch in playable shape! Work on the project will begin later this spring with a view to the new surface being ready for the start of next season.

Edinburgh’s young professionals to get a taste of the city

Neil-Forbes-YNC-sml

As people’s resolutions begin to fall by the wayside, a young professional is helping Edinburgh’s residents looking to explore their city and meet like-minded people in 2014 stay on track with their New Year goals with a range of exciting events throughout the capital.

Your New Crew, the brainchild of young Scottish entrepreneur Gemma Pirnie, is offering the capital’s residents a taste of the city at the start up’s first social event of 2014. Set to be a gastronomic delight, the membership service, which aims to introduce young professionals new to the city to some of the most loved haunts, has teamed up with Café St Honoré and independent brewer Innis & Gunn.

Taking place on Thursday 6 February 2014 guests can expect a special night of beer and food matching with live demonstrations from top Scottish chef Neil Forbes, who will be creating a range of spectacular dishes designed specifically to compliment the brewer’s unexpected flavour combinations. Innis & Gunn’s quality and sensory manager will also be on hand to lead guests through the tasting experience, showing them what to look for when sampling ale.

Launched specifically to help introduce Edinburgh’s best kept secrets to those new to Scotland’s capital, Your New Crew hopes to remove the hassle and isolation often associated with relocating and making a new circle of friends. The service is also open to the city’s existing young professionals and graduates who perhaps want to get out and explore new places and meet new people in 2014.

In an increasingly digital world, founder Gemma hopes to encourage members to step away from the isolating virtual environment by getting out and engaging in their city creating opportunities for them to experience Edinburgh.

Your New Crew founder, Gemma Pirnie commented:
“We are thrilled to be starting 2014’s event calendar at Café St Honoré with Innis & Gunn and look forward to toasting some new faces with a glass of ale.

“Relocating and getting to know a new city can be overwhelming, it can take years before you finally feel at home. Your New Crew takes the stress and uncertainty out of this, leaving our members free to enjoy themselves at our unique events. We always look to recreate the same support and togetherness that is often experienced throughout university, whilst acknowledging the fact that our members are now in the next stage of their lives.

“With an ever increasing digital social presence, it is easy for people to get caught up with their online lives and forget that they have a whole city to explore. Through our varied events calendar we look to combine one off event experiences with great and quirky venues that are slightly off the beaten track. It is a great way to help people who have perhaps tasked themselves with getting out and about in the city this year.”

Commenting on the event, Neil Forbes, chef director of Cafe St Honoré, added:
“We’re pleased to be able to support Your New Crew’s first event of the year, the service provides a fantastic opportunity for people new to the city as well as those maybe those not so new to get to know it that little bit better, with a relaxed informal event that will offer an unforgettable experience.

”I’m a big fan of Innis & Gunn beers and we’ve worked to create a special menu that compliments the unique flavourings perfectly. This tasting session offers attendees an insight into the less well known side of Edinburgh.”

The event takes place on Thursday 6 February 2014 from 6.30pm-8.30pm and tickets cost £10 per person. Numbers for the event at Cafe St Honoré are limited so please book to avoid disappointment. Bookings can be made at http://www.yournewcrew.com/user/register

Holyrood will decide this evening on same sex marriage

Vote due on historic bill in Scottish Parliament.

MSPs will tonight decide on the future of same sex marriage in Scotland, with Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Alex Neil calling for colleagues from all parties to pass the bill into law.

Mr Neil said:

“There was overwhelming support for this bill when first debated in the parliament. Many MSPs from across the political spectrum spoke on this subject, and I was moved by the personal stories I heard from friends and colleagues around the chamber.

“It is right that same sex couples should be able to freely express their commitment to each other through getting married. We have always maintained at the heart of this issue there is one simple fact, a marriage is about love.

“All couples in Scotland in a loving relationship must know that they have the same rights and responsibilities, and regardless of their gender, the same opportunity to get married.

“Throughout this bill, we’ve taken account of those faiths who would not wish to take part in same sex marriage, and the Bill fully recognises and protects celebrants who do not wish to take part.

“Should the bill pass we’ll move swiftly to implement it, including working with the UK Government to ensure that the necessary amendments to Equalities legislation are in place in a timely fashion. I very much look forward to seeing the first same sex marriages taking place in Scotland as soon as is possible.

“I hope that our national parliament takes this opportunity to send a clear signal that our Scotland is a modern and progressive beacon for all, standing as passionate promoters and defenders of equality.

“I urge MSPs to pass this historic bill into law.”

Dalry action plan sees membership almost double

Dalry.front

A business plan to attract new customers at an Edinburgh Swim and Gym centre has reported record success a year on.

Dalry Swim Centre, which is run by Edinburgh Leisure, saw membership almost double from an average of 230 in December 2012 to 440 in the same month of 2013.

The Victorian swim centre has long been a much loved feature of the diverse community, which has really got behind it in the past twelve months.

Improvements and repairs carried out in December 2012 worth £100,000, combined with the introduction of new Dalry membership attracted a raft of new members.

The centre has maintained momentum as word of mouth of the improved centre spread, attracting more than 100 further new members in January 2014.

The increase is attributed largely to young professionals, who now make up almost half of the centre’s membership.

Improvements have included a newly refurbished reception area, and cutting edge new gym equipment, while repairs were also carried out on the pool tank.

The addition of more gym staff to provide support has also proven a hit with customers.

Jimmy Livingstone, Manager of Dalry Swim Centre, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed so many new members the past year and look forward to helping more customers enjoy an active lifestyle in 2014.

“Dalry has long been a much loved part of the community, but we believed there was a strong business case for making some improvements last year.

“The results show how much making the right investment can improve the overall look and feel of a place.

“We take great pride in the new improved centre, delivering excellent customer service and a warm welcome. Our new gym staff have proven a real boon – they are enthusiastic, engaged with customers and have made a massive contribution to the success of the centre.”

Edinburgh Leisure, which manages 30 venues across the city, is constantly evolving its range of membership products to meet customer demand for flexibility and value for money.

Venue specific memberships which have been developed to reflect the product have proven successful across the Edinburgh Leisure portfolio, particularly impacting positively on Dalry, South Queensferry, Kirkliston and the Jack Kane Centre.

Ian Grimwade, Head of New Business Development, said: “We are very proud of our role as an inclusive, welcoming organisation keen to inspire the people of Edinburgh to get active, stay active and achieve more.

“Dalry is an excellent example of how a much-loved historic centre has been made attractive to even more people, boosting activity levels with the people of Dalry and the many commuters and city centre workers who benefit from its facilities.”

Edinburgh Leisure is a not-for-profit business which re-invests any surplus funds directly into providing excellent facilities and services to all customers.

Edinburgh Leisure welcomed more than 4,800,000 visits in 2013, representing a 9% annual increase, and edging ever closer to its target of 5 million by 2015.

FoH reaction to UBIG shares agreement

Ian Murray MP

There was some good news for Hearts’ fans yesterday after Sunday’s defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Easter Road in the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup.

The Foundation of Hearts released the following reaction from chairman Ian Murray MP to the news that BDO has secured an agreement with UBIG for the transfer of shares which  allows a sale and purchase agreement to progress.

Ian Murray MP said: “This is very welcome news from BDO. We are edging closer to getting the club out of administration and we are now talking about when rather than if.

“This is a very significant hurdle overcome and we are delighted but more work is required.

“Let me continue to stress that we encourage every supporter who has not yet done so, and is able, to set up their monthly contribution at www.foundationofhearts.org.”

BDO’s statement read: “The administrator of UBIG has confirmed they will transfer for an undisclosed sum their 78.97% shareholding in Heart of Midlothian FC to BIDCO to enable the CVA to conclude.

“This means that transfer of the club to BIDCO can now go ahead with a timescale of eight to ten weeks for completion of the sale and purchase agreement subject to the deal being ratified through the Lithuanian courts and/or creditors.

“Since the CVA was agreed on the 29th November BDO LLP has been liaising extensively with the Lithuanian administrators and these negotiations have now reached a successful conclusion.

Bryan Jackson, joint administrator of Hearts and a business restructuring partner with BDO, explained: “This is welcome news for the club as it means that the transfer of ownership can go ahead. While there remain some technical issues to resolve the process is now gaining some momentum.”

“I would again like to thank the fans, the staff and the players for their continued patience during this time. For all of those involved with Hearts, on and off the pitch and on the terraces, it has been a very difficult period and their assistance and support has been greatly appreciated.”

Police searching for missing Edinburgh man Alistair Porteous have found a body. The 56 year old hillwalker was last seen leaving his home in The Steils, Greenbank at around 2pm on Wednesday January 29.

Police in Fort William recovered Mr Porteous’ Saab car after finding it parked at the head of Glen Nevis on Saturday morning.

The David Hume Institute is running a series of seminars designed to inform about Scottish Independence. The second in the series features a speech by Willie Rennie MSP, leader of Scottish LibDems:-

Tuesday 4th February 2014 – 6pm

Title: In Britain. In Europe. In Work.
Speaker: Willie Rennie MSP (Leader Scottish LibDems)
Chair: Jeremy Peat, Director, David Hume Institute
Venue: The Royal Society of Edinburgh

The UK’s place in Europe and Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom are essential to support Scottish jobs and the Scottish economy. Millions across the country rely on an effective single market for trade and business. Now that each relationship has been placed fundamentally at stake, there is a need for the argument to be made for Scotland to be “In Britain. In Europe. In work”. Willie Rennie will both argue the case for “in” and set out the reforms to the EU and the UK that will allow them to be the best that they can be for Scotland.

Bruce Munro’s Field of Light set to brighten the Square

DSC04340

One of Edinburgh’s iconic gardens has been transformed into a field of swaying, colourful globes as part of a unique art installation commissioned by the council.

Field of Light, a contemporary light-based work by British artist Bruce Munro (who has a brother here in Edinburgh!) has been set up in St Andrew Square, where it will remain until 27 April.

This is the first public installation of Munro’s work in Scotland, which has delighted audiences around the world over the last few years, and also the first time it has appeared in an urban landscape.

Consisting of almost 9000 lighted glass orbs rising from illuminated stems, the installation ‘bursts into bloom’ at dusk, when the coloured globes light up and gently change colour in the night light. Munro, who created the first Field of Light in the field behind his Wiltshire home, says he was inspired by the heat and brightness of the Red Desert in Australia during a visit in 1992.

Creating an immersive experience, the eye-catching light show will offer residents and visitors to the city a unique perspective on St Andrew Square, enticing them to wander along pathways to view the blanket of light.

DSC04304Councillor Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh’s Festivals and Events Champion, said:- “Field of Light is a fantastic addition to St Andrew Square and we’re delighted to be hosting such a unique and well-received piece of art in the gardens.

“The exhibition follows on from an incredibly successful Christmas and Hogmanay in Edinburgh and I’m confident that this spectacular display will continue to attract interest and footfall to the city centre.”

Bruce Munro is best known for his striking and immersive light-based installations and has shown large-scale work in galleries, museums and outdoor spaces around the world throughout his 30-year career.

Commenting on his invitation to work in Edinburgh, Bruce Munro said: “I was thrilled to be invited to Edinburgh and St Andrew Square is a wonderful and unique location to exhibit in.  The Field of Light is a bit of a chameleon in that the space changes the work more than the work changes the space. This is an added bonus for me because each new iteration we create delivers new surprises and gives one the distinct feeling that there is life force pulsating within the installation.”

The exhibition, which is free to view, is being funded by The City of Edinburgh Council who have contributed £65,000 to stage the event, with other support from Marketing Edinburgh and Essential Edinburgh.

Andy Neal, Chief Executive of Essential Edinburgh said: “Field of Light promises to be a stunning event in the city centre which will be a genuine attraction, drawing people in particularly in the evening when we know visitors feel there is not enough to do out with bars and restaurants. The St Andrew Square Garden is a fantastic venue for it, and I am sure it will be enormously appealing to both local people and visitors alike.”

John Donnelly, Chief Executive of Marketing Edinburgh, said: “This is a stunning installation and we’re delighted that it’s come to Edinburgh. There’s a huge amount happening in the city at the moment– so Field of Light’s arrival comes at an excellent time. It’s a tremendous attraction and a must-see, both for visitors and those closer to home.”
