Berwick Rangers 0-4 Hibernian

HibsLogosmall

Hibs continued their pre-season workout with a comfortable 4-0 away win over Berwick Rangers at Shielfield Park earlier today.

Goals from new signing David Gray, Liam Craig, Tom Gardiner and Lewis Allan secured the victory in front of a noisy travelling support.

Scott Robertson returned to the starting line-up after recovering from injury and trialist Luke Coulson who had just been released from Cardiff City took his place on the bench.

There were a few familiar faces in the Rangers’ line up with former players Lee Currie, David Gold, Dean Horribine and Jay Doyle all on the home squad.

Hibs started brightly and Craig went close before Gray opened the scoring after winning a crunching tackle on David Gold before striking a long range effort into the net.

Alan Stubbs’ men added a second after the break when Max Todd rounded the goalkeeper only to be brought down and Craig netted the penalty.

Callum Booth saw a fine effort deflected past the post and from the resultant corner Todd floated a terrific cross into the area which Lewis Allan nodded into the path of Gardiner who calmly netted from closer range.

Allan rounded off the scoring near the end and Gareth McCaffrey was unlucky not to add a fifth in the last minute.

Hibs face Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park on Tuesday.

Berwick Rangers: Bald (Andrews 46′), Jacobs (Gray 62′), Hoskins, Currie, Fairbairn, Tulloch (Doyle 70′), Willis (McKenzie 62′), Currie, Russell (Miller 70′), Carse (Dunn 62′), Gold (Horribine 70′). Substitute not used: McKenzie.

Hibernian: Perntreou (Brennan 67′), Gray (Coulson 46′), Stevenson (Booth 62′), Hanlon (Forster 60′), Nelson (Gardiner 67′), Craig (Dunsmore 62′), Todd, Robertson (Tudur Jones 46′), Cummings (Allan 46′), Handling (Martin 70′), Stanton (McCaffrey 67′). Substitutes all used.

Where to eat and drink – Earthy Foods Causewayside

Salad counter at Earthy
Salad counter at Earthy

Oh I do love Earthy!  For those of you who may not have been yet or do not know Earthy began back in 2008 with its founders decided to share their love of good food, eating locally, seasonally and organically, and growing your own. The idea behind Earthy is a ‘neighbourhood hub’ combining the elements of a food market and farm shop, deli and restaurant serving fantastic seasonal local and organic produce with a warm and very chilled out vibe.

There are three Earthy market stores: Causewayside, Canonmills, and Portobello. The shops are brimming with the best and tastiest local, seasonal and organic produce, food and drink from over 100 local producers, as well as supporting artisan producers, fair-trade growers and co-operatives from further afield.

Earthy Food Store
Earthy Food Store

Both shopping and eating at Earthy is such a lovely, convivial and relaxing experience whether you sit inside or out in the herb garden. Living near Causewayside we frequent that shop more than others but have to say the dinner menu at Canonmills is excellent and very well priced.

The venue operates an all day café style menu (and shop) serving breakfast from 9am 7 days a week (10am on Sunday) until 6.00 or 7.00pm depending on the day. They do a great avocado and chili on sourdough bread for breakfast and good bacon rolls.

So on to lunch in the beautiful Scottish sunshine this week at Earthy Causewayside. They have extensive outdoor seating both immediately out side the building and in the back yard surrounded by plants for sale. All the outdoor spaces and the conservatory area are dog friendly but the man restaurant is not. When the sun is shining you cannot beat relaxing in the yard surrounded by herbs and flowers.

The Back Yard
The Back Yard

At lunchtime they have a huge selection of salads such as new potatoes, peas and asparagus with mint, or bulgur wheat, chickpea and feta to name a few. There are usually 10 salads to chose from to make a salad plate, ciabattas, flatbreads and specials such as pulled lamb platter with dips and salads or home made burger with mint relish and sweet potatoes.

I always order the tart when I go to Earthy, as I have a slight quiche addiction. You get one portion of salad for free with your tart, which is plenty to fill you up. Our choices were beetroot, feta and hazelnut and bacon, roasted pepper and goat cheese. They were both excellent and went very well with our Fentiman’s ginger beers and free water.

Feta and Beet Tart
Feta and Beet Tart

Coffee and tea selection is extensive and it would be rude not to have one of the amazing cakes to go with your lunch so a carrot cake and a chocolate and nut brownie appeared essential. Later we did a spot of veg shopping in the upstairs shop, got a loaf of bread and set off home inspired to create something just as good for tea! Until next week Earthy!

Events at Earthy this summer feature the new Junk and Funk Sunday Market where you can take a table for £12 and sell your bric a brac, artwork, creations and inventions. Junk and funk will be open to the public from 10.30am-4.30pm.

Biotechnology conference starts in Edinburgh on Sunday

8 EICC Exterior May 2013 credit Malcolm Cochrane

The 16th European Congress on Biotechnology expected to generate millions for the Capital’s economy

The city will be full of biotechnology experts from Sunday when the conference begins, but apart from all the important discussions which will take place at the 16th European Congress on Biotechnology at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), perhaps the more important aspect is what it will do for our city’s economy.

Marketing Edinburgh estimate that it will bring an economic value of £1.3 million to Edinburgh during the four day European Congress on Biotechnology (ECB16) from 13-16 July 2014. It is expected to attract over 800 academic and industrial biotechnologists. The scientific programme is designed to cover all aspects of biotechnology, including environmental and green biotechnology, microbial physiology, microbial synthetic and systems biology, industrial biotechnology, biochemical engineering, medical biotechnology and much more.

ECB16 has benefited from VisitScotland’s Conference Bid Fund. Match-funded by cities, the bid fund is geared towards increasing Scotland’s competitiveness within the conventions market and attract high-yielding conferences, linked to Scotland’s areas of expertise in industry, commerce, science and medicine.

Marketing Edinburgh Chief Executive John Donnelly, said: “Bringing ECB16 to Scotland was the result of a terrific collaboration between Convention Edinburgh, the EICC and our members. The entire process commenced over two years ago, when we approached Edinburgh Napier University’s Emeritus Professor and Edinburgh Ambassador, Charlie Bryce, to potentially lead the conference bid.

“From there it was a lot of hard work from our Ambassadors, the Business Tourism team, host venue the EICC, VisitScotland and conference agency TFI Group – not only to initially win the bid but to bring those plans to fruition. It’s a great example of how working together effectively can achieve amazing results and successfully generate millions for Edinburgh’s economy”.

Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s Tourism Minister, said: “The VisitScotland Conference Bid Fund has been instrumental in helping to attract numerous prestigious, high-yield, high-spend international conferences to this country, making Scotland more competitive within the international conference market. Securing the bid for the European Congress on Biotechnology is excellent news for Scotland, and for Edinburgh in particular, and is further testament to the world-class facilities at the EICC.”

Louise Andrew, EICC Head of Sales and Marketing said:  “Congresses in city centre locations are always successful and the ultimate flexibility of our space, in the heart of Edinburgh, is even more value enhancing. During ECB16 each day begins and ends with major plenary sessions for 800 plus delegates but in less time than it takes to break for coffee our revolving auditoria deliver four symposia stages in the same space, optimising congress programme time and delegate satisfaction”.

Simon Maier, Creative Director, TFI Group, said:  ECB16 is organised by the EFB in conjunction with us; working together in close partnership, we have used our shared expertise to produce a brilliant, vibrant and engaging congress which is certain to leave its mark in Edinburgh’s scientific history. TFI looks forward to organising more events in this beautiful city, where we already have a strong presence.”

Over 109 conferences and events are due to take place in Edinburgh between 2014 and 2021, estimated to generate over £117 million for the local economy. This includes internationally respected conventions such as the European Aquaculture Society in 2016 and the Cleft Lip/Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies conference in 2021.

Edinburgh is the number one ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) conference destination in the UK outside of London and rated 21 in the top 50 European City ranking.

williammcculloch

William McCulloch left his home in Bedford Court at 8.55am this morning (12 July) and hasn’t been heard from since. This is unusual behaviour for William, and his family are increasingly concerned for his welfare.

William is described as white, 5ft5in to 5ft 6in tall, medium build, bald with hair at the back of his head, wearing a beige jacket, blue jeans and black shoes. He also uses a walking stick.

David Gray delighted to be back in Scotland

2013_09 HIBS 10 Hibs’ latest signing David Gray is delighted to be back in his native Scotland after ten years south of the border and he had no hesitation in signing for the Easter Road club despite having once been on the books of rivals Hearts. He also insists that his spell at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson where he trained alongside world class stars will pay dividends in his future career. Speaking at the pre Berwick Rangers match press conference at the Training ground, the 26 year old said: “This is a great opportunity for me and I was delighted to take the chance of playing at such a big club.  I’ve spoken to the manager and I know some of the lads who are playing here at the minute and everyone is really enthusiastic about the up and coming season. “It (Playing against Hearts) doesn’t bother me. I’m a professional football player at the end of the day and I’ll be 150% wanting Hibs to win. “The day I signed for Manchester United was special and I was a bit star struck but making my debut was probably the highlight because then you can say you’ve played for Man U. I knew the day before when we were shaping up. Sir Alex said, ‘you’re going to be playing tomorrow’. It was brilliant to hear that. The back four that night was myself, Wes Brown, Mikael Silvestre and Gabriel Heinze, it was quite a strong back four. It was a horrible windy night at Crewe and we won 2-1 after extra time. “I was very fortunate to get that education at Man United. You’re almost spoiled as a player. It’s top class facilities, coaches and physios – it’s just great. “You’re lucky enough to train and play with some of the best players in the world and you can see what they do on a day to day basis, how professional they are and what they’ve had to do to get to where they’re at. It stands you in good stead on and off the pitch in how you should conduct yourself. From a learning point of view, it was different class. Paul Scholes was the best for me from training with him. If you’re on his team, you win. He’s a different class. “I started off as a winger / striker because I was quick I used to play up front then toward the end of the season I was moved to right back for one game which was a bounce game for the reserves and the way they play you still get to get forward then after the game I had a chat with the staff and that said they wanted to try me in that position and it took off from there. Gray will make his debut against Berwick Rangers today at Shielfield Park.

Around 5pm on Friday evening police in Edinburgh were called to an address in Morningside Grove where an 85 year old woman was found with significant injuries.

Detective Superintendent David McLaren said: “Whilst we are in the very early stages of a serious crime investigation, it would appear at this stage that this lady has been attacked in her own home. As a result she has received life threatening injuries.

Alison Johnstone, Green MSP for Lothian and sport spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, is calling for consultation with user groups to determine how £20million should be used to improve sporting facilities.

The public funding from Sportscotland is expected to be topped up by other bodies to upgrade existing sites and create new centres.

Alison Johnstone MSP, a former competitive athlete and qualified athletics coach, said:

“While I welcome investment in facilities that cater for a broad range of needs, it’s vitally important that we see meaningful consultation with all user groups. In deciding where this money is spent we must listen to the needs of athletes, coaches, governing bodies and leisure facility users.

“The demise of Meadowbank stadium in Edinburgh is a classic example of what not to do. We need to ensure new and upgraded facilities come with realistic maintenance budgets and appropriately trained staff. We need to make sure no area is left behind in the race to create a Commonwealth Games legacy.

“Given the health issues our society faces from inactive lifestyles, and the growing cost to the NHS, we must take every opportunity to make sport accessible, enjoyable and affordable.”

Sarah Boyack MSP lodged a motion at Holyrood recently to congratulate Euan Hunter on his recent record breaking cycle to raise funds for Mary’s Meals.

The 48 State CycleThat the Parliament congratulates Euan Hunter from Hermiston on cycling across the USA in aid of Mary’s Meals; understands that Euan, with support from his university friends, Duane Walker, Iain Skinner and Kenneth Errington, completed the 6,850 mile route taking in all 48 contiguous states in a world record time of 38 days and eight hours, breaking the previous record of 60 days; understands that Euan aims to raise £5,856, enough to allow Mary’s Meals to feed 480 children, that is 10 children for each state visited on the route, for a year; commends the work of Mary’s Meals, a Scottish charity that provides daily school meals for almost 900,000 children across five continents, and considers this to be an incredible achievement for a very worthy cause.

The fifth Edinburgh International Magic Festival attracted record numbers this summer as 8,000 people enjoyed eight days of magic across the Capital.

In the Year of Homecoming Scotland, local magicians featured alongside internationally acclaimed performers as magic collided with theatre, science, comedy, history, sideshow, technology and psychology.

German performance artist Johan Lorbeer took the festival to new heights as he levitated on the Grassmarket during the opening weekend. Seen by more than 3000 people, Johan’s appearance trended on Twitter and created a huge buzz around the city.

For the third year in a row the Opening Night Gala at The Royal Lyceum Theatre sold out as magic fans were treated to eight very different performances of breath-taking illusion, sleight-of-hand, circus and mind reading. Award winning artists from South Korea, USA, Spain and France shared the stage with the UK’s finest magicians and American illusionists Penn and Teller told us why they believed The Great Tomsoni, Vegas illusionist Johnny Tomsoni, should win The Great Lafayette Award. Considered a virtuoso by the magic community, Johnny accepted the award via video link with his long term friend and student Lance Burton.

Performers enjoyed record ticket sales at this year’s new venue, Adam House Theatre and 140 pupils graduated from the sell-out Magic School at City Art Centre. Brand new show Tower of Illusion at Camera Obscura and The Secret Room at Lauriston Castle both sold out as members of the public tried their hand at solving riddles in a unique treasure hunt and watched Scotland’s finest magicians animate the Lauriston’s intriguing past with stories, performances and illusions.

The Edinburgh International Magic Festival announced a New Arts Sponsorship Grant to help develop a new partnership with Krispy Kreme – the first time the company has sponsored the arts. Gabriel Rudderman from France won the under 18 prestigious sleight of hand competition War of the Wizards and Englishman Paul Dawson won the Open War of Wizards Competition.

One of the unexpected winners at this year’s festival was social media as audiences and members of public tweeted, liked and shared their magical experiences, increasing MagicFest Facebook likes by 400% and Twitter followers by 50%.

MagicFest Artistic Director, Kevin McMahon said: “Thanks again to people from all around the world who travelled to this year’s MagicFest. The festival grew by a massive 20% this year and I’m blown away by all the support from our sponsors, performers and audience who once again opened up to magic in their thousands. The shows at this years’ festival received amazing reviews from the local media. Going forward I’m absolutely set on bringing the best acts from Scotland and around the world to enchant audiences here in Edinburgh.”

MagicFest Managing Director Svetlana McMahon said: “This was our most ambitious festival yet, with more sell out shows than any other previous festival. We’re really grateful to have once again been a recipient of the New Arts Sponsorship Award, from Arts & Business and the Scottish Government, supporting our partnership with iconic Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.”

Best bars to watch the football this weekend

Beer and Skittles Bar
Beer and Skittles Bar

Brazil may have been knocked out by Germany in spectacular style but their arch-rivals Argentina are ready to take up the challenge in the World Cup Final. Get a taste of the best bars in Edinburgh to watch the final of the greatest show on earth (according to all you football fans out there).

Edinburgh has its fair share of excellent bars but where is the best place this weekend to catch the match? Here are a few of our suggestions:

Beer and Skittles

With the motto ‘travel the world one beer at a time’ this bar is a sure fire winner. This new sports bar opened a couple of months ago on Picardy place in the basement of Steak Restaurant. They have plenty of widescreen TVs, booths you can reserve, a free pool table, terrace and beer cocktails! Drinks please – Quilmes or an Erdinger Weisse depending where your money lies.

The Raeburn Stockbridge

They have a fabulous sun terrace for those non-footballers in your group (that will be me!) and a pull down screen and projector for the aficionados. With a 2.5 metre screen, surround sound and the promise of ice cold beer, and fantastic food this is a great option for any group. They have a rather lovely Argentinian Malbec or you might prefer one of the many great craft bees including the German Furstenburg.

Three Sisters

The infamous Three Sisters in the Grassmarket always has sport on and lots of room to find a seat. You can now pre-book space in the World Cup beer hall and enjoy a 2 pint Stein and a Man Plank – which is a huge sharer board with nachos, burgers, wings and more!

Sportsters

Because this is an all American themed sports bar it’s a given that this is darn good place to watch the football with your mates while having a pint and something to eat. Its definitely a lads lad type place with girls usually outnumbered but don’t let that put you off. They have recently started serving alcoholic milkshakes for a different twist to your pre match drinks choice.

The Pear Tree House

With multiple screens inside and a famous beer garden outside featuring a big screen this bar may be full of students but it’s a great place to watch on a nice evening. They have a good selection on draft and changing deals.

Third place play off – Saturday 12th at 9pm – Brazil vs Holland

Final – Sunday 13th at 8pm – Germany vs Argentina

With so many places to chose from in the city, where will you be watching the match?

“There is no evidence to suggest any risk to the public and inquiries are ongoing.”

Kitten found on number 3 bus

Ticket at Balerno

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a kitten was found on an Edinburgh bus.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted by Lothian Buses on Thursday (10 July) after the feline was spotted by a lady on the number 3 service.

The black and white kitten, estimated to be around seven weeks old, is now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno. He has been nicknamed Ticket.

Animal Rescue Officer Connie O’Neill said, “A member of the public alerted the bus driver after she spotted Ticket wandering around the bus with no owner in sight.

“We think it’s very likely Ticket was abandoned but we also can’t rule out the possibility someone may have been transporting him and left him behind when they got off the bus.

“If anyone recognises this little guy or knows who he belongs to, we’d urge them to get in touch.

“Ticket is in good condition and is really friendly. If we’re not able to return him to his owner, we’ll aind him a loving new home.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

Caroline Flint, who lives with her husband Giles at Bield’s John Ker Court in Edinburgh, is celebrating after completing her latest book- a guide for expectant mothers.

Flint is a freelance Midwife who works approximately 20 hours a week, mostly providing antenatal classes for pregnant couples all over the UK in locations such as Edinburgh and various boroughs of London.

This is Caroline’s first book aimed at expectant mothers and includes her extensive experience as a midwife of more than 37 years delivering babies in homes, Birth Centres and hospitals.

But it is also the service that she receives within her owner-occupied Bield home that the 73-year-old credits her success. Since moving to the retirement housing development three years ago,Caroline has been able to place more emphasis on her passion for writing.

The service means that she owns her own property but still has access to the care facilities that are provided by Bield.

She said: “I cannot thank Bield enough for the support I receive while living at John Ker Court.

“It has allowed me to stay independent and live a full life but also gives me that peace of mind that I’m living in a safe and secure environment with professional assistance if I need it.

“I might be partially retired from the job as a midwife but I am determined to pass down all my experience and continue writing to new mothers, giving them the best advice possible.

“Writing books keeps me very busy and the best part is knowing that I am helping to put a lot of expectant mothers’ minds at ease.”

Caroline wrote the majority of her book at her Bield home where she has great support from the community within the service.

With regular coffee and cake mornings, Caroline feels the social side of the development has helped keep her focused and enabled her to write her latest book.

She added: “My husband and I are free to do what we want, when we want but have such a great network of friends and family close by, that we always feel safe.

“As we get older we knew we wanted to live somewhere that we can be independent but still get assistance should we need, which is exactly what this Bield service provides.”

A book signing for the launch of “Do Birth” took place at The Edinburgh Book Shop on May 31st giving fans a chance to meet and greet the midwifery heroine.

Caroline was extremely grateful for the stellar turnout which included a variety of guests from expectant mums and midwives, to Caroline’s friends from John Ker Court.

Aileen Morton, Bield’s Business Support Officer, said: “Caroline is a true testament to being able to achieve what you want at any age.

“At Bield we aim to promote quality care whilst maintaining individual independence and Caroline is the perfect example of our ethos in action.

“We look forward to helping Caroline celebrate the success of her book and continue to support her as she writes using her years of invaluable experience.”

Caroline’s book has not only had support from her friends and family but has already received great reviews from The Guardian and Take a Break Magazine.

The book has also been a hit across the pond with a major American book retailer, Barnes and Noble, now stocking “Do Birth.”

Bield – a registered charity in their 41st year of business – has grown from humble beginnings, opening its first housing development in Bo’ness to become a major provider of a wide range of housing and care services for around 20,000 older people across 22 local authorities.

Edinburgh MSP tables motion on charity chief’s retirement

new_anne_rgb_72dpiEADIE CONGRATULATES RETIRING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF CHILDREN 1st

MSP for Edinburgh Southern Jim Eadie has today tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating Anne Houston on her achievements as the Chief Executive of local children’s charity CHILDREN 1st.

Ms Houston officially retired at the end of June, having worked as the Chief Executive of the charity, which is aimed at promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people within their families, since 2007.

Under Ms Houston’s leadership, CHILDREN 1st has supported and contributed to the agenda on public sector reform and the shift towards preventative spending in service provision.

In a statement, Jim Eadie said: –“Over the past three decades, Anne Houston has played a remarkable part in the promotion and development of safety and wellbeing for children and young people in Scotland. In doing so she has worked with various third sector organisations as well as the Scottish Government.

“I hope Anne will enjoy her retirement and I wish her successor Alison Todd every success as the new Chief Executive.”

EDINBURGH, UK - 24th October 2011: Children 1st board members and senior management portraits. ..(Photograph: Richard Scott/MAVERICK) Anne Todd is the new CEO of the charity. She has called for more to be done to prevent violence against children.

Alison, who takes over the helm of Scotland’s leading child welfare charity from Anne Houston, has pledged to follow her predecessor in speaking out on behalf of the children, young people and families that CHILDREN 1ST works with.

She said: “For 130 years as the RSSPCC and now as CHILDREN 1ST we have campaigned for all children to grow up free from the fear of abuse and violence. Much has improved, but if we really want to ‘make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up’ we must be prepared to change and develop our services, and to create a society that truly values children.

“CHILDREN 1ST believes it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect children, and we work with communities and professionals so that they can feel confident and empowered to make this a reality. Ultimately everyone should know what action they can take to protect children.

“It is incredible to think that we accept that the smallest and most vulnerable members of our society are the only ones whose assault is considered ‘justifiable.’ Scotland, as part of the UK, is one of only four countries in Europe still to commit to a ban on child physical punishment, and in the last year it has been called upon to do so by three separate UN committees.

“Parents tell us they feel guilty, stressed and ashamed when they have hit their children. We need to support and encourage parents to be the best they can be, which we know is also what parents want.”

Scottish Independence Referendum – today’s topics

TER Holyrood (1)

A selection of remarks and comments and pointers to articles about the Scottish Independence Referendum.

People living in Scotland are invited to vote in the referendum on independence from the United Kingdom on 18 September 2014. The referendum question is “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

Whether you intend voting Yes or No to that question, your views, and those of others,  have a place here. We invite comments and we also invite you to write about what you think by using our Submit your Story feature here.

French-born MSP Christian Allard is inviting French people and Francophiles alike to celebrate the French National Day at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh.

The ‘Oui Picnic in the Park’, organised by the French for Yes group, is taking place at 3pm on Monday 14th July 2014, an opportunity for many to come and celebrate ‘Bastille Day’ over some food and wine.

Everyone is encouraged to bring along baguettes, camembert, patisseries, saucisson and wine, with Mr Allard recommending the wine to come from his native French region, Burgundy.

The ‘French for Yes’ group is one of many international groups that support a Yes vote in the September referendum, with others such as Poles for an independent Scotland, Irish for Yes, Africans for Yes, Asian Scots for Yes, and the recently launched English Scots for Yes.

Mr Allard, MSP for the North East of Scotland, commented:-“I am very much looking forward to the Oui Picnic, which is an excellent opportunity to meet people from other nations voting Yes in September and an occasion to mark an important day in the French calendar. This picnic is another way to demonstrate that this referendum is about the people who live here, wherever we come from, and about our future as a nation.

“The Oui Picnic will also show the shared values that both our two nations have, and to celebrate a new alliance between a modern Scotland and a modern France.”

Being part of the UK protects schools and hospitals in Scotland, new independent figures on North Sea oil and gas confirmed yesterday.

The independent and impartial Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has revised down its forecasts for North Sea oil and gas revenue by a quarter between now and 2040/41.

The new figures show that in what would be the first three years of separation, Alex Salmond would be faced with a black hole of £12 billion because of over optimistic estimates by the Scottish Government.

The OBR figures also confirm that the Scottish Government’s revenue forecasts for 2012/13 and 2013/14 were £5 billion higher than the tax actually received.

Better Together said that the huge black hole would mean big cuts to public services in a separate Scotland. Public spending in Scotland today is more than £1200 higher per head than the UK average.

The news comes as Better Together leader Alistair Darling visited the National Hyberbaric Centre in Aberdeen. David Smith, Managing Director of the centre, said that being part of the UK is vital for his business, which benefits from contracts with the UK Ministry of Defence for naval training programmes. These include at Faslane on the Clyde.

Better Together leader and former Chancellor Alistair Darling said:-“Today’s figures confirm what we already know – the oil is running out and the tax we will get from it is falling. Being part of the UK means we can make the most of what is left in the North Sea without putting the funding for our schools and hospitals at risk. It’s the best of both worlds for Scotland.

“Oil and gas has been great for Scotland. The industry employs around 200,000 people here and generates billions in tax to pay for our public services. That’s a good thing, but the tax we get is volatile and declining. Alex Salmond has consistently over estimated how much tax we would get from the North Sea, and today’s figures confirm that his future guesses are as unreliable and optimistic as ever.

“Alex Salmond’s claims on oil have already been proven to be spectacularly wrong. Now he wants us to put the future of our schools and hospitals at risk on the basis of nothing more than his dodgy projections. This is a risk that we simply don’t have to take. We can stay in the UK and get all the benefits of oil without taking on all the risks that would come with independence. It’s the best of both worlds for Scotland. We should say no thanks to Alex Salmond’s fantasy economics in September.”

David Smith, Managing Director of the National Hyberbaric Centre, said:-“As far as our business is concerned it is of huge importance that Scotland remains part of the UK. I’d rather be dealing with a customer base of 63 million than one of five million. To give an example, the Ministry of Defence closed their own hyperbaric facility in Portsmouth and now use ours. If Scotland were to vote to become independent there’s a real risk that someone would set up a rival centre in England.”

Green Yes, the Scottish Green Party’s campaign for a Yes vote in the independence referendum, says it welcomes an expert report recommending that an independent Scotland remain part of the GB-wide market for electricity and gas.

A Green Yes briefing on jobs points out that more than 11,000 people are already employed in the renewables industry and most firms are expecting to grow. Scotland has the offshore engineering skills to make marine renewables a success and create thousands more jobs in construction, grid development and research.

Alison Johnstone, Green MSP for Lothian and a member of Holyrood’s economy and energy committee, said:-“Energy is an issue that all countries are facing up to, and with our renewables potential Scotland has a chance to generate not just what we need but also energy for export to enable our neighbours to meet their low carbon targets. Encouraging the trading of energy not just within these islands but across the North Sea makes sense, and I see a Scottish Parliament with responsibility for energy policy much more likely to prioritise these issues.

“By contrast Westminster is locking us in to new nuclear with its massive costs and toxic legacy, and a dash for fracked gas that risks our local environment and our carbon budget. What today’s report from the Expert Commission on Energy Regulation underlines is that it’s sensible to co-operate on such a crucial issue but it’s vital that Scotland gets to decide the direction it wants to go in.”

If Scotland votes Yes to independence in September the Queen should be dropped as head of state: that’s the message that will come out of a republican conference to be held this weekend in Edinburgh.

Columnist Ian Bell and SNP stalwart Duncan Ross will be among the speakers at this weekend’s republican conference in Edinburgh.

Campaign group Republic is holding its annual conference in Edinburgh for the first time. The theme of the conference is Yes or No, the Monarchy Must Go.

While Republic doesn’t take sides in the independence debate the group has called on Scotland to be given a choice of head of state in the event of independence.

Republic’s CEO Graham Smith said today:- “The monarchy is wrong for Britain, it will be wrong for a newly independent nation. If Scotland votes Yes in September it would be absurd to claim independence on one bended-knee to a monarch living in another country’s capital.”

“The SNP has already shown how debate can move public opinion – so let’s have this debate now and see how quickly Scots in an independent Scotland decide they want their own head of state.”

“Scotland may well vote No in September – and if that’s the result we’ll all keep working together for a united British republic. But if the result is Yes then Scotland needs to make a clean break – a nation is not sovereign while it has its head of state chosen by genetic lottery in another country.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend’s conference where we’ll be making the case that, Yes or No, the monarchy must go.”

Ian Bell, columnist for the Herald, will tell the conference on Saturday:-“The SNP assert that “the People are sovereign”, but mean to retain the monarch, presumably still assenting to legislation, as head of state. What kind of nonsense is that, even in the misty realms of what passes for Scottish “constitutional doctrine”?”

“One function of the royals, it seems to me, is to condition us to the idea that unelected elites are somehow the natural order. Monarchy is linked to a profoundly unequal society.”

Stars of the grassroots campaign for a Yes vote in the independence referendum are featuring in a new Yes Scotland campaign video.

Produced by an award-winning production company, the five minute video features 32 well-known faces from across Scotland who are campaigning for a Yes on September 18.

As part of Yes Scotland’s expansive social media campaign to reach out to voters about why they should back an independent Scotland, the video will be released online today Friday, via YesScotland.net and also shared with the tens of thousands volunteers who can show at events being held all over the country in the build-up to Referendum Day.

Last night there was a debut screening at The Scotsman Cinema but only for invited media, cast and Yes campaigners. Speaking ahead of the event Andy Maas, Producer of Freak Films, said:-‘It’s fantastic to be part of the campaign and see people from all walks of life coming together for this video. With only two days of shooting, this is a just a snapshot of the breadth of the independence movement.

‘Film and video is an important medium to communicate with people and I hope the people of Scotland enjoy watching  why so many people, just like them, are voting Yes.’

Speaking in the video, comedian and actor Greg Hemphill said:-‘The referendum is going to come round once in a lifetime and the opportunity is right now. Who want’s to be dependent when you can be independent? On September the 18th I’m voting Yes.’

Former BBC journalist and Green Yes campaigner Louise Batchelor said:-‘We are not choosing a political party, we are choosing the way we live our lives. In September I am voting Yes.’

Cathy is going to Greenland!

Tiso Cathy Alldred

Tiso Employee takes on 3,280ft Greenland Challenge

Go-getting Tiso employee Cathy Alldred is set for the biggest climbing challenge of her life.  This week the 40-year-old from Edinburgh will journey to the remote glaciers of East Greenland to climb the sheer granite peeks of Fox Jaw Cirque.

To help Cathy turn her dreams of climbing the cirque into reality Tiso is sponsoring her Greenland Expedition – supplying both equipment and footwear.

The ominously named Fox Jaw Cirque is one of the toughest climbing destinations in the world. With peaks standing at more than 3,000ft, only the most experienced climbers have what it takes to tackle the ascent.

During the six-week-long expedition Cathy hopes to establish new routes on the cirque – scaling dangerous peaks, which have never been touched by human hands.

For months on end Expedition Leader Cathy and her team of four seasoned climbers; Sion Brocklehurst, Robert Durran, Pat Ingram and Simon Smith have been training for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.  As well as enduring tough workouts at the Edinburgh International Climbing Area in Ratho where Cathy is based, they have tackled a number of arduous climbs in Scotland, the Lake District and North Wales.

Cathy said: “I first heard about Fox Jaw Cirque through Craig Mathieson; Scotland’s ‘Explorer-in-Residence’. He asked me what would be my dream climb and I told him I wanted to climb where not many people had been before.

“Ratho is around 28 metres in height and now I’ll be going up something which is 1,000 metres up. We have had to organise and plan everything including food for six weeks and how we will set up base camp. As a team we’ll all have to work together.”

An experienced indoor climber, Cathy works as a sales assistant at the Tiso Ratho store. The store has the biggest range of climbing equipment in the country and is set within the biggest indoor climbing arena in the world.

Cathy added: “Doing something like Fox Jaw Cirque is amazing but also pretty scary and it’s certainly going to be a challenge. If I inspire just one person to go and do something that they never thought they could do then it’s been a success, it’s not always about the summit but the lessons learned on the journey.”

Cathy is making a film about her epic trip called Wall-to-Wall, which she hopes will form part of the 2015 Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival. On her return she will also embark upon a mini lecture tour about her climbing experience.

CEO of Tiso, Chris Tiso added:  “We are immensely proud of Cathy for undertaking this challenge and she sets a great example to other enthusiasts to show what can be achieved through plenty of training and a passion for the great outdoors.

“For over fifty years, Tiso has been helping our staff and customers have adventures, whether large or small, with friends, family or alone in the wilds. For us the outdoors isn’t just a living, it’s a way of life and Cathy is testament to our belief that life is an adventure. We are delighted to be supply her and the team.”

Incident at Royal Edinburgh Hospital

Police in Edinburgh have been dealing with an incident at Royal Edinburgh Hospital this evening.

Police Scotland has detained a man following an incident within the grounds of Royal Edinburgh Hospital this afternoon, around 4pm, when  two people were injured.

Superintendent Kenny MacDonald said:- “Police cordoned off an area around the Royal Edinburgh and Astley Ainsley Hospital while enquiries were carried out.

The injuries of the two people, a man and a woman, are not life threatening.

I’d like to thank the public for their patience during this time.”

Tim Montgomery, Director of Operations, REAS, NHS Lothian, said:- “We can confirm that an incident took place in the grounds of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital earlier today. This was an isolated incident and no other patients or staff were injured. Patient safety remains our main priority and we will continue to help Police Scotland with their enquiries.”

Grow Wild project progressing in Pilrig Park

Balfour's Botany allotment workshop with Becky

Pilrig Park Grow Wild wild flower haven begins to take shape

Balfour’s Botany project reaps the benefit

Three months after receiving a £4,900 cash injection from the Grow Wild community projects fund for Scotland for its Balfour’s Botany project, Citizen Curator – an arts organisation which focuses on the history and identity of Leith and North Edinburgh – reports tremendous progress.

The project taking shape near a disused railway line in Pilrig Park is in homage to the city’s inspirational Balfour family, famous among fellow Scots for promoting an understanding of botany.

The site near Leith is part of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Let’s Grow Wild campaign, which aims to inspire people across the UK to get together to transform unloved spaces with native wild flowers, creating new habitats for wildlife in the process.

Grow Wild is a £10.5m programme bringing people together to sow, grow and enjoy UK native wild flowers.  97% of wild flower meadows have disappeared since the 1930s.

Supported by the Big Lottery Fund and led by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Grow Wild is also a response to studies that have shown that communities across the UK are now more fragmented than ever before and young people in particular do not often have the freedom to connect with nature.

The Scottish Grow Wild campaign is partnering with Greenspace Scotland and Youth Scotland.

Since receiving their award, Citizen Curator has held workshops in the local allotments, horticulturalist-led walks round the park and workshops in the woods with the local Gaelic school. Working with local residents, young people, artists and horticulturalists, the project examines the botanical history of the area to jointly create a new planting scheme and installations for the park.

The project is a collaboration between Citizen Curator and the Friends of Pilrig Park group with local youth and community organisations who use the park heavily involved in its development.

Duncan Bremner at Citizen Curator, said: “It has been very exciting to be involved in the project so far. It’s great to see you younger people getting their hands dirty and we have had several local residents come forward with historical information about the area and the Balfour family. Next month we will be making a push to clear some of the undergrowth so we can plant out in September.”

There are 13 community projects across Scotland, which have been awarded a total of £41,070 including sites in Edinburgh and the Lothians, Glasgow, Fife, Argyll and Bute, Stirling, Falkirk, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, the Scottish Borders and Shetland.

Balfour's Botany Family plant out in park

Over the life of the programme (which runs until 2017), Grow Wild wants to inspire three million people to sow and grow wild flower seeds and share their results through social media. Over the last three months, 31,000 groups have already signed up to receive special Grow Wild seed kits, including through residents’ associations, wildlife trusts, Girlguiding UK, UK Youth, the Prince’s Trust, Youth Scotland and the RSPB.

Let’s Grow Wild is set to create hundreds of beautiful, creative and inspirational wild flower patches, blooming across the UK this summer for everyone to enjoy.

The Grow Wild Scottish flagship, the Water Works, opened in Barrhead last month with local dignitaries, school pupils and community groups turning out to celebrate the first stage of the former sewage works transformation into a 10,000 square metre park and gardens. The Water Works attracted £120,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Further details about Grow Wild can be found on growwilduk.com/ or via social media:

Etihad to fly the Edinburgh to Abu Dhabi route from next summer

Etihad Airways A330-200

Another new route from Edinburgh Airport has been announced today.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will next year launch its first service from Scotland with the start of a non-stop daily flight from Edinburgh to its home base of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital city.

The new route, which will commence on 8th June, 2015, will be operated with a two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering a total of 22 seats in Business Class and 240 seats in Economy Class.

In addition to providing a direct connection between Edinburgh and Etihad Airways’ Abu Dhabi hub, the forthcoming service will enable passengers and cargo from Scotland to connect conveniently to Etihad destinations across the Gulf region, Asia, Australia and Africa.

Edinburgh is Etihad Airways’ first Scottish destination, and its third departure point from the UK. It currently offers triple-daily flights from London, and double-daily flights from Manchester.

James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “Scotland has been on our radar for some time and we are delighted that the first direct connection between its capital, Edinburgh, and the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi, will be operational from next year.

“The two cities share strong tourism links and the UAE is Scotland’s primary trade partner in the Gulf region, which will fuel strong demand among business and leisure travellers on our non-stop service. Travellers will also benefit from convenient connections to many other destinations, both on our own global network and through our relationships with other airlines.”

Speaking at the annual dinner of the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association in February this year, Mr Hogan pledged that Etihad Airways would start flights from Scotland in 2015. He added that a second service would be introduced from Scotland to Abu Dhabi in five years’ time.

Scotland’s Transport Minister, Keith Brown, said: “This new route between Edinburgh and Abu Dhabi is fantastic news for Scotland, building on our already strong links with the United Arab Emirates and providing a major boost to our international connectivity.

“By removing the need for extra connecting flights, we make Scotland a more attractive place to do business and make it even easier for visitors from around the globe to come and taste the fantastic tourist experience we have to offer. I look forward to this service taking off in the summer of 2015 and have no doubt it will prove a huge success for both Scotland and the UAE.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, added: “We are delighted to welcome Etihad Airways to Edinburgh Airport from June 2015. The airline will fly direct to Abu Dhabi, giving the people of Scotland access to the United Arab Emirates and offering our passengers even more choice. With direct flights to over 100 destinations from Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways increases our global connectivity, ensuring Edinburgh Airport truly is where Scotland meets the world.”

Demand for the new route should be boosted by Edinburgh’s strong links with the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and, in particular, Australia. Edinburgh is ranked as the second most visited city in the UK for Australians, as around eight per cent of Australians are of Scottish descent.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of Visit Scotland: “The addition of an Abu Dhabi to Edinburgh direct service is exceptional news for Scotland as it unlocks Etihad Airways’ worldwide network and allows us to further attract a wide mix of leisure and business travellers from right across the globe. Visit Scotland’s strategy is to develop Scotland’s air connectivity by working with global airlines.

“This exciting new direct route between the capitals of the UAE and Scotland continues to open up our wonderful tourism product to the Middle East, alongside Asia, Australia and Africa. As Scotland welcomes the world in 2014 and beyond, direct air connectivity is absolutely crucial if we are to play on the world stage, and we very much look forward to the arrival of the first flight in 2015.”

Apple store will open in Edinburgh

canmore_image_SC01170513

The problem is that we cannot tell you when. But we are not alone in that. Social media has been abuzz with the news all day, and of course for the last year or more since it was first rumoured, but nobody yet knows when the Big Day will be. But today Apple have confirmed to The Edinburgh Reporter and other news outlets that there is definitely a store on its way.  this was not really news to us and we are sure it is not news to you either.

Our lovely photo from the ©RCAHMS Scottish Colorfoto Collection shows Woolies at the east end of Princes Street around 1920 in the same place that Apple now propose to open.  Maybe the new Apple store will become as iconic as Woolies once was. Who remembers the Pick ‘n mix downstairs and records upstairs?

This will be the fourth outlet in Scotland and according to some commentators the 38th in the UK.

But we are a bit excited about it!  Being an all Mac person The Edinburgh Reporter has been to many of the 425 Apple stores across the world, including the fabulous store in San Francisco where they have a theatre for tutorials, the original store in Cupertino which was disappointingly small and of course the Glasgow Buchanan Street store which has been the Scottish flagship to date.

John Donnelly, CEO Marketing Edinburgh, said:-“We are delighted that Apple are opening their new store in Edinburgh and it is a clear sign that our city centre is an attractive place for businesses to locate. Apple is such an iconic brand the world over, and will be  a fantastic addition to the existing retailers on Princes Street. Its location, directly opposite the Waverley Steps, will remind residents and visitors  alike of what a quality city they are in.”

Not everyone is just as excited about the prospect for the usual reasons. Jason Eccles from Simply FixIT said :-  “We first heard about that site being used by Apple about 20 months ago and it took us nearly 6 months to get our Waverley Steps store so that we could be as close as we could to them. We are looking forward to having them in Edinburgh because it’s another way for people to see just how much they can save by coming to SimplyFixIt.

“Just today we had a customer with a broken MacBook screen. It’s a 15” Retina model – so pretty top of the range. Apple in Glasgow had quoted £520 but we fixed it, in a faster time, for £370. Same parts. Our technicians are Apple Certified Mac Technicians, plus we pay all our taxes unlike our American cousins….”

Will this store take over from Glasgow in terms of sheer size? Perhaps it will. There appears to be space on the ground and first floors to allow the usual layout of two floors connected by a glass staircase with a Genius Bar upstairs. Some of the remainder of the building which used to house Woolworths and latterly Burger King has been used for the quirky new all chocolate and turquoise Motel One which enters from West Register Street. If you haven’t been there yet then we would suggest you try it out. Very stylish with a great view over Princes Street to Edinburgh Castle.

Maybe we should all just wait and see, but some pundits are suggesting the shop will open at the beginning of August.
